Segments
- Show open and tonight's rundown 0:12–2:30
A host opens with cold-show banter about a severe headache ('a band of brigands trying to break out of my head'), addresses Mike and Dan by name, and blames Mike for tearing out cables and delaying the broadcast. He runs down the night's lineup: On This Rock in the studio, another round of Live from the Path versus Dear Abby, Justin Bieber's troubles, a Secular vs. Solomon title bout, and a discussion of whether the ends can justify the means.
- On This Rock returns: the fire stories 2:31–7:57
The hosts welcome the band On This Rock back to the studio and adjust the camera framing, with band members Chris, Jeremy, and Trevor addressed by name. A host asks everyone whether they have ever set themselves on fire: answers include a college fire, the host addressed as Mike setting his hand on fire with flammable hand sanitizer, a Boy Scout winter-campout pants fire, a band member falling into a 220 dimmer pack while working at Adventureland, and a former electrician's coworker nearly re-burning a rebuilt house by igniting spilled PVC glue with a torch.
- On This Rock: winter off, gigs, and lineup change 7:59–9:59
A band member says they take the cold months off because they don't play well in the cold, using winter to practice, write, and absorb a lineup change with a new member, Mr. Fordyce. Upcoming dates discussed include Spirit Midwest (with Olympic-style coverage planned), Smokey Row in Des Moines next Friday at 7 as part of Al and Julie's Jammin' Java event, Brush Arbor in Lineville on the Iowa-Missouri border, and a possible Mercer Homecoming in Missouri.
- E-cigarette digression 9:59–13:44
A long tangent on e-cigarettes: one host who has tried one explains the nicotine cartridge and charger mechanics, concluding they are useless because a dead battery sends you back to $7 packs of real cigarettes. Others chime in about truck stops and a mall booth, and the bit closes with jokes about bubble pipes and candy cigarettes.
- Smokey Row details and web links 13:44–17:07
The Smokey Row gig is confirmed for next Friday at 7 o'clock (the first Friday in March, the 4th), and the show floats broadcasting live from the venue. The band's website is dormant after a long break; they are on Facebook and MySpace, reachable through the Live From The Path Facebook event and the performances page at livefromthepath.org. The segment ends with the lead-in to the Dear Abby bit.
- Dear Abby 1: bill-paying anxiety 17:08–19:10
A host reads a Dear Abby letter from a mother whose college-educated children, 28 and 30, have what they call 'bill-paying anxiety' and have lost their licenses over unpaid traffic tickets. The hosts reject the premise outright ('Get over it. Pay your bills'), agreeing with Abby that 28- and 30-year-olds are not children, and joke about the condition becoming a legitimate disease with a prescription.
- Dear Abby 2: the conservative friend 19:10–24:05
A host reads a letter from a conservative woman (no drinking, dancing, makeup, or pants) whose friends mocked her religious jewelry and fashion. One host's blunt take ('Dear loser. Get over yourself') leads into disagreement with Abby's advice to drop the friends: they argue she should be secure in her values rather than avoid people who differ, noting that Jesus hung out with sinners, and that her letter also reads as lining up her own righteousness to point at others.
- Dear Emmy: the agnostic father, and 'Street Jesus' 24:08–33:59
A host reads a final letter ('Dear Emmy') from a married father raised Christian who now considers himself agnostic, borderline atheist, asking how to answer his children's 'Is there a God?' A host advises him to seek honest answers in Scripture rather than outside sources before trying to lead his kids, warning of the weight of directing children away from God. The conversation turns to witnessing tactics – being 'shrewd as snakes, innocent as doves' and 'Street Jesus,' example-led faith dropped casually over time – closing with a sung 'Street Jesus' theme riff.
- On This Rock performs two songs 33:59–51:15
After a short break the band plays two songs: an unnamed opener about a passionate walk with Christ ('catch on fire'), and 'I Will Not Be Shaken,' an upbeat song about standing firm in faith with a sing-along tag. Afterward the hosts rave about the hook, the band notes the song is recorded with gang vocals, promises a duck walk at live shows, and a member admits forgetting the lyrics mid-chorus of his favorite song.
- Prayer night for Fort Des Moines Church of Christ 51:15–53:36
The hosts plug past and future On This Rock performances at livefromthepath.org/performances, then announce that Pathway Church in Johnston is heading to Fort Des Moines Church of Christ (off Army Post Road on the south side) this Wednesday at 7 p.m. to pray for another congregation – no offering or service, just Christians praying for and encouraging another church, organized by worship and arts pastor Jared Roy. A Hardee's stop is floated as a bonus.
- Dan's heart scare 53:36–57:28
Dan, addressed by name on-air, recounts a three-week medical spiral: a doctor visit for a cough revealed high blood pressure, leading to an EKG, a cardiologist referral, a stress test, an echocardiogram, a CT scan, and finally a TEE scope that found an ascending aortic aneurysm – 'the John Ritter thing' – with a same-day surgeon consult where he expected open-heart surgery. The surgeon instead said his valves were fine and no surgery was needed, just keep blood pressure down, and Dan credits prayer from people literally all over the world, including messages from Thailand.
- A band member's son and the heart-rate miracle 57:28–1:03:51
An On This Rock member tells the story of his two-year-old son Malachi Paul, who after NICU time for breathing issues began sleeping through the night while seeming constantly tired; a checkup led to an ER visit where a cardiologist diagnosed PJRT (permanent junctional reciprocating tachycardia) – an extra heart node driving 250-260 bpm at rest. Admitted Friday night for an expected two-week stay, the boy was switched to a second medication at 11 p.m. and by 1 a.m. his heart rate had settled to 70-80 bpm; he went home Monday on medication with zero restrictions, with a future ablation procedure expected to fix it permanently.
- Secular vs. Solomon game 1:03:53–1:19:21
The full game: the host reads proverbs and the panel (hosts plus On This Rock, with Kevin called out for peeking at the screen) votes Solomon or secular. Verdicts: 'like a bad tooth or a lame foot is reliance on the unfaithful' is Solomon (Prov 25:19); 'each generation will reap what the former generation has sown' is secular (Chinese proverb); 'it is a trap to dedicate something rashly' is Solomon (Prov 20:25); 'a filthy mouth will not utter decent language' is secular (Chinese proverb); 'a fool judges people by the presents they give him' is secular; 'a rat who gnaws at a cat's tail invites destruction' is secular (Chinese proverb); 'wealth brings many friends, but a poor man's friend deserts him' is Solomon (Prov 19:4); 'an honest answer is like a kiss on the lips' is Solomon (Prov 24:26); 'a whip for the horse, a halter for the donkey, and a rod for the backs of fools' is Solomon (Prov 26:3); 'as you make your bed so you will sleep' is secular (Russian proverb); 'do not forsake wisdom and she will protect you' is Solomon (Prov 4); 'God gives to those who get up early' is secular (Russian proverb, with a Stalin-era propaganda riff). Surrounding banter touches a Salvation Army founder video and 'whatsoever a man sows.'
- Hard question: do the ends justify the means? 1:19:21–1:28:37
A brief YouTube channel and newsletter promo gives way to the question Phil the drummer put to Mike on Sunday morning: for Christ, do the ends justify the means? Mike's answer – no, never; the means are what produce the end that gets judged – anchors a long debate touching Paul's prison letters (rivals preaching Christ from wrong motives), Matthew 16:26 on gaining the world and forfeiting the soul, televangelists running for-profit ministries, the line between watering down the message and making church welcoming, 'itching ears' preaching, and the woman caught in adultery as the model of truth without condemnation.
- The wrestler who forfeited rather than wrestle a girl 1:28:37–1:42:26
A host, who notes he and Ben discussed it earlier in the week, lays out the story: an Iowa high school wrestler ranked third in the state forfeited at the state tournament rather than wrestle a girl (Cassie Herkelman), citing conscience and faith, having done the same before. The panel debates whether there is a real biblical issue – honoring women versus her willing entry into combat – and lands on respecting the kid for standing on principle: he cost only himself a tournament while the media tried to pathologize his faith. A California case of a sexual-assault charge arising from a wrestling move is raised as a warning about where mixed-gender wrestling leads.
- Justin Bieber's Rolling Stone answer on abortion 1:42:26–1:46:42
The hosts note the parallel between the wrestler and 16-year-old Justin Bieber, who told Rolling Stone he doesn't believe in abortion ('it's like killing a baby') and, asked about rape, answered 'I think that's really sad… everything happens for a reason… I haven't been in that position, so I wouldn't be able to judge that.' They debate whether a 16-year-old should face such a loaded question, conclude the question was a no-win trap, and praise his answer as better than they could have given – while the self-described 'tolerance' crowd proved intolerant of it.
- Closing: 'More I See' and sign-off 1:46:42–1:52:47
The hosts plug the website, YouTube channel, podcast, archived shows, last week's Circular Revolution performances, and the newsletter ([email protected]), then On This Rock closes the show with 'More I See,' a song about the state of the world and needing Jesus. The show signs off with 'Have a wonderful week' and 'We will see you next week.'

Full transcript
You're listening to Live From The Path. We're, you know, glad to be here. Lucky to be here, however you want to think about it. Just glad to be alive. Yeah, yeah, no doubt. Mike, are you feeling alive? Apparently. Okay, well, good. I'm the only one with a serious illness coming around. Yeah, boy, I was near death this week. Near death. I tell you what, Dan, I've never had headaches to the extent that I had this week. Mike tells me it sounds like a sinus infection headache or something. Yeah. But it seriously sounds like there's a band of brigands trying to break out of my head. Short brigands. I don't even know what those are, but it sounds painful. There's a band of them. They're no friend of mine, I'll tell you that. And they're after me. Is it a tightly wound band, or is that a different kind of band? No, no, like a group of brigands. Like a team's team. Yeah, I know, I was just. Like you did. Oh, don't get me going. A mic, if you will. Anyway, you are listening to Live from the Path. Thank you so much for being here. I am sorry about the short delay. Mike was tearing out cables, caused his problems. There's a ton going on at the show tonight. On This Rock is in the studio with us. They'll be playing some tunes, and we'll be talking through with them. We've got another round of Live from the Path versus Dear Abby. The Biebs is in trouble. There's trouble in the Biebs world, so we're going to talk about Justin Bieber, and he's got himself into some hot water.
Oh, no. I'm sorry, Dan. It turns out it's a wig. Oh. Things you didn't know. Crushing. I know. Oh, that ruins everything. There's a title bout on Secular vs. Solomon coming up. This one's tough. I've seen the preview for Secular Solomon. It's kind of rough this week. If I hadn't seen that, of course, I didn't really look at it, so I don't know whether I should participate or not, but it's rough. I've been working on it. It's a good one. And also going to talk a little bit about the means to an end, whether it can be true in a Christian viewpoint that the means can justify the end, and we'll hit back to the scripture on that. We're going to talk about that iPod confessional. We just talked about that. No, we didn't even get to it. You glazed over it. All right. We're going to… What are your thoughts on it? No, we're going to hacksaw it when I'm ready now. It's not time. You don't bully me. Well, you might. I might. I might do that. So anyway, that's what we've got going on this week. Dan, I can't see it. Is everything rolling all right? It appears to be… We're broadcasting? This camera needs something.
Chris, you're just… You're shoulders, and if you could slide over, that'd be really nice. And that'd be awesome. And we'd try to help. Oh, that looks a lot better. Yeah. Look at me. That looks good. I'm on TV. And you and I look great because we're just closer. Yeah, well, I can't help you. Hey, there's like half of me. Me and Jeremy are going to have to cuddle up or something. Jeremy? I'll scoot up a little bit. What's happening? Let's all be close here. All right, fine. We're off. So on this rock, welcome back. Thank you. Boy, here's what we've done. We've really… Trevor, just no respect. Hold on a second. Hold on. Here's my man in the corner here. That poor guy. Anyway, we've really created some tight corners in the studio. So we have some long-range, excellent plans for the Pathway Studios. We are not there yet. Yeah, we have a short-range budget. That's what we have. And poor Fox in the hole back here. I mean, he's… In fact, in case of fire, he's really done for. He's burning up something fierce in that corner. I'm not looking good either.
That's true. How flammable are you? Let me ask you this. Have you ever set yourself on fire, either by means of accident or bet? Yes, I have. Yes, you have. I had to think about that for a while. Now, I can't get a microphone over there at the moment, but I want you to ponder the circumstances as I will find a way to get that story out of you later. All I have to say is I was in it for college, so… Uh-huh. Okay. All right. That's all right there. Have you had a little too much water at the time? I had. Okay, I knew it. I figured that. That's what does the college kids in. Too much water. Yeah. Mike, have you ever set yourself on fire? Yeah, I did it here, remember? You told me that that hand sanitizer was flammable, and that it was going to make a cool burst of flame, and then I set my hand on fire, and it burned my hand. It didn't do a cool burst of flame at all. I forgot about that. Yeah, that was classic. That was awesome. Those are great memories. Yeah. Good thing we got that one on video. What an embarrassment. It hurts. I laugh. I set my pants on fire once in Boy Scouts. We had winter campouts, and I had a winter campout. I had two pairs of pants on, and it was really close to the fire to get warm in the morning,
and the snow was like, you know how it gets hard sometimes after it's been there for a while, so you can walk on top of it. So my pants catch on fire, and I start rolling in the snow, but there's nothing. It's just hard snow, so it didn't do any good. I mean, it wasn't like a raging fire. Yeah, that's what everybody else did. No, look, he's on fire! Yeah, it was bad. It's a great memory. You know, after it gets hard after a while, it's like it's stale. It's stale snow. The snow is getting stale. Well, when you're a little guy, it's been a while since I've been able to walk on top of the snow, so I was a pretty small guy at the time, and yeah, it was bad. It's traumatic. That was my last winter campout. Yeah, fair enough. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I didn't go bad. Okay. Yeah. All right. Never got the memory. How about the rest of you guys? Did you ever set yourselves on fire? I did about two years ago. Really? Yeah. Well, not intentionally, but yeah, I burnt my arm really bad. Ouch. Well, that's not really a funny story. No, it wasn't really anything funny about it. It's not anecdotal or putting a smile on anybody's face. No, it wasn't really funny. I fell into a 220 dimmer pack for a lighting console when I still worked at Adventureland. Oh, no. Ooh. Set my whole shirt on fire.
We're going to talk about the electrical situation at Adventureland sometime. We're going to talk about it. Oh, yeah. We'll have to get Mr. Carson in here for that one. Yeah. I haven't set myself on fire, but I do have a funny story about fire. Okay. So I was an electrician in a prior life, and so we're working in this house, and the funny thing about it is it was a house that had burnt down the year before, and the insurance money was building the house back, and we're getting ready to leave, and the guy I worked with had accidentally spilled some PVC glue because we were gluing some pipe up, and he spilled it, and the house was in stud phase, so it was just stick frame. And we're down in the basement, and he's got this pile of glue right in between these two studded walls, and we're about the end of the day, and he goes, hey, you want to see something cool? No. Oh, no. And I said, sure. Oh, no. He takes the torch, and he touches it to the pile of glue, and this little soft blue flame just danced across the surface of the glue. It was pretty. It was nice, and I'm not kidding. I've never seen anything before like this my entire life. It sounded like a jet engine revving up. It was like, and all of a sudden, that flame shot up about eye level with me. I grabbed my tools, and I grabbed my ladder, and I started heading for the door, and he went and found a piece of sheet metal from the HVAC guys, and he, like, the tin man from the Wizard of Oz, and he, like, lays down on the fire to put it down. Oh, no. I mean, we were this close to the house that previously burned down, burning down again. That wouldn't look good. Yeah. So, boys, how'd this happen? Well, you see, officer. The last words he said were, do you want to see something cool? And you said, yes, you're an accessory. Did you get that on your tombstone?
Saw something cool. Well, that's rough. So, what have you guys been up to? What's keeping you busy? You got plenty of gigs? We take a lot of time off in the cold months because we don't play well in the cold. Yeah. For sure. And you're frozen and numb. We use the winter months mostly to practice a lot and to try to write a few more songs and work on some other covers and things like that, and we went through a little lineup change, as you see. Yeah. Sure. We're excited about Mr. Fordyce. And so, we went through a little lineup change, and we played a few gigs with him in the late fall and took a little time to practice, and now we've got a couple more things lined up in the future, so we're looking forward to getting back into it. Are you guys doing Spirit Midwest again this year? Yes, absolutely. Did they give you a stage time, nothing? Not yet. You're just confirmed to be there? Just confirmed to be there. Would you be willing to participate in our Olympic-style coverage of this event? Absolutely. If we were to say, would we like to interview on this rock? Oh, absolutely. We're going to get a couple couches and a fireplace, and we're going to sit around it in nice-looking clothes, and then we're going to pan. We're going to say, we'll go to whoever our correspondent is over at the Hard Rock stage, Stephen. And Stephen will go, yeah, thanks, Mike, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, on this rock. And then you guys are going to have to talk to them. Sweet. So if they have a Live from the Past shirt, then we know them, because no one else buys it unless we give it to them. So that's how we know whether they're with us or not.
There's unlikely to be any freelancers in there. No, probably not. I'm with these guys. All right. We're playing Smokey Row, too. Not this Friday, but next Friday. One of the, like, the Jammin' Java, is that? It's one of Alan Julie's events. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So we're not this Friday night, but next Friday night. You got voted number one coffee house in Des Moines. Which one? Smokey Row. Have you been there? No. It's good. I heard people catch fire there. No, that's not the truth. Oh. Well, it didn't happen when I was there. They don't spill glue on the floor there, no, really. No, things are fine. Well, this sounds like a kind of an uppity establishment, but okay. Where is it at? It's right on the corner of, like, it's right off 235. Yeah. And Martin Luther King. MLK, yeah. And it's Smokey Row, but it's illegal to smoke because it's Iowa. Yeah, unless you've got one of those blue cigs. Yeah, blue tip. American blue tip. Yeah. E-cig. Yeah. Yeah. And you can get those without nicotine, so you can just blow water vapor.
Yeah. Yeah. You can also get a pipe for bubbles and take it in there, too, I guess. Maybe you can park your trike out back and tie it to the water pipe. They're getting rid of the candy cigarettes, so you might have to just revert solely to the pipe. Ain't that something? Yeah. I don't mean to promote water bubble smoking, but I'm telling you. Let's not smoke. No, no. It's just having a good time. Are you suggesting that the e-cigarette is effeminate? Kind of. What do you mean? Why? I've tried it. Okay, here's the thing. I've tried the thing. Here's its downfall. So you buy this e-smoke, right? And the butt end unscrews, and it's the nicotine delivery system, right? It vaporizes it. It comes out as water. You're like, yeah, this is going to be great. Seems to be better for my health. Whatever. But you have to charge it, just like your cell phone. And so as soon as you don't charge it, what do you think is going to happen? Johnny's still taking in X amount of nicotine a day. You're just going to buy a pack of smokes. It does you absolutely no good. Unless you're actually doing it with no nicotine in it, so you're getting rid of the habit and the drug delivery system. As soon as you forget to charge your battery, you're right back to paying $7 a pack. How long does the battery last? I don't know. It depends on how much you puff on it, because the battery is only there to – I think the
vaporizer works on its own accord, but it has a light in it that goes – Do they have an adapter for your car? Yeah, you can – Can you buy a second one? Yeah, you can buy. Dude, they're like 75 bucks. They're really expensive. Really? Yeah. I mean, they do work to some extent. Can you puff it while it's plugged in? I mean, it's going to look creepy, but – Well, I don't – Can you get your cigarette cord in your cordless? Because the battery is the white end and the nicotine is this, so it screws into the charger and then you're just holding the nicotine. And you're not supposed to eat it or chew on it or nothing. I guess they were having problems with that. People were just – Did you get this off of eBay? What? The E thing? Yeah. No, they sell it at the truck stop. You can give them a Hy-Vee team. Do they have one? They used to just have them at the – Flying J was the only place you could get them. I'm glad to see it's expanding. Well, they have a booth in Jordan Creek. Really? Yeah. Is there dudes in there smoking it? Yeah. Yeah. They had a big deal about that when it first came out in Jordan Creek. It's been there for months. Maybe they even got them down in price.
Huh. Maybe I should fire them back up. I should start smoking so I can try it. Yeah. It's just water vapor. I think I gave it a shot. I don't smoke and I seem to remember that I gave it a shot. Yeah, it's not bad. I don't think I did it right. I don't know. I would take it to smoke before. I don't know how to do it. I've never even had a puck. It's terrible. I don't think you know how to do it. You give it a shot. I don't smoke at all, but I remember giving it a shot once and I thought, and I didn't do it right. I don't know what happened, but there was no effect. It was just like breathing except for it was more difficult because I had something. It was like having a straw in your face. Yeah. So I'm pretty sure I just didn't do it right. I used to play with my dad's cigarettes, but I never smoked them. I just thought it was cool. Burn a leaf, you know, the hole in the leaf. What? You lit the cigarette? Oh, yeah. I see you can't even do that anymore because they're fire returning. They'll go out on their own after like a minute and a half. Really? Yeah. If you don't continually fuel the fire with your inhalation, they're made. There's a chemical, shocking, in the smokes now that'll put the smoke out. And so you're breathing that chemical in, you're saying? Yeah. Yeah.
They added it for our safety. Yes. It does happen. So it takes the flame out if you leave it lit. It also happens to cure heartburn if you suck it in real hot. True. You forget all your woes. Okay. Yeah. Take on it. So the next time you have heartburn. Yeah. It's a broad-ranging joke. It covers all grounds. It's one for all ages. Please enjoy it. You can listen to it live from the path. We're in the studio with On This Rock. So we got Smokey Row coming up. That's next Friday? Yep. Next Friday. What time does that start? 7 o'clock. 7 o'clock? Sweetness? Dan, are you going to make it out to that one? Next Friday? I'm going to put Dan on the spot so he has to agree to go to your gig. Actually, we had talked to Al and Julie. And at some point, once we kind of get our stuff tucked up here, we're going to try to broadcast that kind of stuff too. It's like go out to Smokey Row. And, you know, it won't be a four-camera operation, but we might be able to swing a couple and then feed the mix out from whatever Al's got going on and be able to broadcast that event. Just something else we can throw out there. Well, there's four of us, so we need four cameras.
Yes, yes, it's likely. And makeup. It's like a U2 concert. We need all four cameras going at once. And the strobe lighting. We're going to need some more money. Is it not on February 25th this coming Friday? No, a week from this Friday. A week from this Friday. We're the first Friday in March. Yeah, 4th. So what about after that? Anything else coming up worth throwing out there for everybody to put on the calendar? We're working on a couple of things. Nothing here in the Des Moines area, but there's a deal called Brush Arbor. And so we're set up to do that down in Lineville, down on the border of Iowa and Missouri. Cool. And also down in Missouri, a lady down there was nice enough to invite us to come play at the Mercer Homecoming. They'd heard us play at a church down there. And so that's in the works. We haven't confirmed that yet, but that's in the works. And then after that, we're available. All right. All This Rock is open and available for geeks. Do you guys have a website that people can visit? We have a Facebook and a MySpace. We still own the website, but we don't put anything up there anymore because when we took that long break, it was kind of a lot of nothing. Right. Right. You know. Sure. More people check their Facebook anyways. Right. Yeah.
Since we're not a touring band, we didn't see the point in keeping the website up. But, you know. No, I understand that. So it is just On This Rock Facebook, right? Facebook and MySpace. Okay. Excellent. Yeah. It's excellent. And if you go to the Life From The Path, if you have the Life From The Path Facebook, we have an event out there that is for tonight that has On This Rock, and I believe it has a link to, I think you can click on that name and get to their spot. Yeah. And don't we have a musical performance from last time they were in the studio still up on the website? Yep. If you go to lifeinthepathing.org, which you should be at if you're watching the show at the moment, and then on that left-hand toolbar, you can click performances and find On This Rock, and it has links to the past show plus all the performances from that show. And obviously after we're done here tonight, all the performances from this show will be up there as well. Yeah. So you can catch up. Don't watch the world go by. Watch the world go by. That was catchy. I don't know. That's solid, too. That's the only part I remember. But still, it's good. Hey, at least you remembered it. Yeah. Actually, I keep checking the On This Rock website to see where you guys are playing, and it's just, I can't say. What's happened to them boys? He's always kind of, Dan, Dan, Bill, Dan. What happened to On This Rock? Do you know what's going on with him? I don't know, man. I checked the website.
I have no idea. He looked healthy the last time I saw him. He was talking about those e-cigarettes. He was really pumped. He was going to go get one the next day. All right. So, Mike, what are you going to roast with Dear Abby about? You want to do some Dear Abby things real quick? Yeah, yeah. Okay. So, I roasted up. I don't know if we can do them all at once, but there's a couple of them that I thought were fairly classic. I also dug up one for the Tell Me About It from Caroline Hacks, who is also a relationship expert type person. Yeah. So, let's see. Oh, yeah. These two are classic. Okay. We'll do the first one. This one's kind of short. Dear Abby, two of my children, ages 28 and 30, and college educated, have what they call bill-paying anxiety. In quote. In quote. It doesn't matter if they have the money or not. They find it difficult to pay their bills. They both have lost their license for not paying traffic tickets, but that hasn't taught either one of them a lesson. Any advice on how to help? That's ill. Okay, is she trying to say that this is a legitimate disease, bill-paying anxiety? Like, people go to psychologists and say, I got the bill-paying. Was it in quotes to imply that it's a joke? It was indeed. Okay. I'm saying they're 28 and 30, correct?
28 and 30. Get over it. Yeah. Pay your bills. I mean, mom can quit worrying about it. I mean. Yeah. Does she give them money? Who, the mom? No. No, Abby takes kind of the same tact on this. Like, 28 and 30, these are not children anymore. College educated or not, obviously, something has happened that they see bills and look at them and go, ugh. Actually, I just don't want to send them money. You know, like, you didn't have any problem incurring the expense. The only age I would have flinched at is 13 and 15. Yeah, yeah. Like, anywhere beyond that, bill-paying anxiety, I think, does not make any sense to me at all. I don't even think, I mean, I wouldn't doubt that it's now a legitimate disease, but I'm fairly certain it's not a legitimate disease, you know? Yeah. But I could very well see psychologists going, yeah, we're starting to see this a lot lately with the baby boomers and all. It's bill-paying anxiety. Here's some clavimox. We'll straighten you right out. Who's to say? Okay. Question number two for Dear Abby. Same paper. I am a very conservative woman. I don't drink, dance, wear makeup, or pants. Or pants? Yeah. I think it reads… Oh, I gotcha. Okay.
It reads, ha-ha, funny the first time. I didn't sound very conservative. I enjoy the company of friends despite our differences and thought they enjoyed mine. On our most recent outing, however, they mocked my religious jewelry, commented on my lack of fashion, and made me feel guilty for not wanting to stay out late. Despite this, they are great friends and would help me at the drop of a hat. I don't bring up their being overweight or that I think some of their clothes they wear are ugly. I don't criticize them for sleeping around, and I wish they would accept me for who I am. I'm considering not going out with them the next time they ask, but I don't really want to come to that. Any suggestions? Dan? Go ahead. Dear loser. Get over yourself. Why do you wear such ugly clothes and bad jewelry? Why are you so worried about what your friends are doing and what they think of you? Just be yourself and who cares? Here's the thing. Okay, so here's what Abby says, and I'm going to disagree with her, and I'll tell you why. So she says, her suggestion is it's time for you to start cultivating relationships with people whose values are more like your own. The friends you have described may be lovely, but their comments were out of line and folks are known by the company they keep. If you spend a lot of time with the women you have described, people will begin to make assumptions about you. Dan, what's the first thing that comes to mind when, say, folks are known by the company they keep? Like in a scriptural sense? Yeah. Like bad company, corrupts, good… Like Jesus hangs out with sinners. Oh, okay. That was the first thing I thought of. There's several scriptures that come to mind. That's the first thing that came to your mind?
That's the first thing I thought. Yeah. Okay. So here's the thing. So she might be a bit of a funny-duddy, whatever, you know, like whatever morals she's sticking to, whatever her values are, it doesn't seem like it's too big of a deal. So, but I disagree with Abby's advice when she says, you know, you probably should cultivate a base, you know, to support your values if that's what you're lacking. But, I mean, like avoiding these people altogether seems to be the exact opposite of what we're after. She's running from it. I mean, you know, I have such a hard time respecting people who like whine to somebody on a newspaper. You know, it's like, like really having this, you can't figure out… Dan, if that's going to be your take on it, these are not going to go over very well. I know, but it's hard to get past that filter going, really? You can't call your friend and say, hey, man, I like my jewelry. Or, hey, you know what? You're fat. I mean, you guys don't like my clothes. You tell me all the time. I don't say anything about how overweight they are. Well, that's the thing. I've never written Abby and said, Mike and Ben, they make fun of my shirt every single week. They say I look like a couch. What should I do? I've never once done that. Ow, my head hurts. Okay, so I think we're comfortable with, I'm going to disagree with Abby that she needs to get rid of the friends, but she needs to be a little more secure in what she's going to be. Like, if you're going to do these things, like, it shouldn't be a big deal. You know, like, you like to wear couch shirts. I do. You don't seem to change the fact that you wear couch shirts. We talk about it every week. This one's pretty conservative, but…
That's more of a curtain. Yeah, yeah. Or a throw. But a nice one. Yeah, so anyway, you know… Not a Kmart one? I think if you're going to stick… I don't know about the not wearing makeup or pants. I mean, it seems… Well, she doesn't dance either. Does it say that? I don't drink… Yeah, I don't drink, dance, wear makeup or pants. Whatever. It teaches Owen. It's a Paul thing, right? Like, if it's, you know… Well, you know what? That ties right into that wrestling dude. Yeah. It's like, what was the point of it, though? She was saying, I'm really awesome. I do this, this, and this. My friends, they sleep around when they're overweight. Well, right. Like, if it truly didn't bother you that they do all these things, I don't know that you probably would have mentioned it on a national broadcasting standpoint. Actually, so I guess the question, are you lining up righteousness so that you can, you know, point them at somebody else? Exactly. That's obviously… There's no reason to mention that I do all the above. Look how good I am. Yeah. I'm awesome. I'm conservative. I'm, you know… Don't wear pants because I'd be bad.
I just… I don't feel right. Like, the devil's on me. And those friends, those wicked friends, they make fun of me. Yeah. I don't understand. Can you believe it? I'm so great. Yeah. Why would they even say anything? Who could not see it? Yeah. She needs to get over herself and all these people do. Okay. I'll try to get a better answer than that, but… Okay. I had one more of that. Oh. Okay. This one, this one, I don't know if… I don't know if this… Are you okay? The medication… He's over here mumbling. She doesn't wear pants. Okay. I was trying to think of someone who, like, who, like, has to struggle not to dance. So, like, they hear music or whatever, and they… They're starting to catch themselves, like, they're doing, like, a half jig. Stupid. My right side won't listen. I'm going to go out and have an e-cig until this dance is over. Okay, last one. Dear Emmy, I was raised a Christian, but now that I am older, I am questioning my faith. I consider myself an agnostic, borderline atheist. Agnostic is… Someone who could care less either way. Yeah.
Okay. Which is weird. Like, to be, I could care less either way, but I'm borderline. I care a lot that the religion is terribly wrong and there is no God. That's a weird thing to be borderline. Bordering between lukewarm and cold. But go ahead. I'm pretty sure he listens to agnostic radio and he's just grabbing words off the air. The problem is, I am married and a father. I want to raise my children to be open-minded and tolerant, but I do not know how I should go about it. How do I answer the question, is there a God, when I myself am not sure? Have you any advice on the subject? Wow. I'm really interested in what Dear Abby says, but Dan, what is your advice? Well, this is a tough one, I think, for Dan to answer, because obviously he's not coming from a neutral perspective. Yeah. I think it's honest to periodically question, you know, like, wow, do I really believe what I say I believe? Yeah. And I think he's there. Maybe he hasn't had an honest study. He's probably basing his history as authentic Christianity, and maybe he hasn't had authentic experience. You know what I mean? Like maybe an actual relationship with Christ? Maybe he hasn't really read the Bible, but he's gone to maybe raise in a church where they talk about it once in a while, but he doesn't really have a grasp. I'm guessing. You know, I'm guessing. Sure. Because generally people, you see that a lot, where people, like, assume they know what the Bible says, but they really don't, you know, because they haven't actually read it, you know? So he's questioning, and rather than going to the Bible for answers, he's going to outside sources, which is kind of pulling him away, and maybe he needs to figure himself out first before he worries about what he's telling his kids. Because he can't, he's, you know, the blind leading the blind at this point. Right. You can't lead them to open-mindedness. You're going to… Well, I mean, but do you really understand how much weight that question actually has
if you don't understand God's principles? Like, do you really understand that if there is a true God, and your kids come up to you and say, Dad, is there a God? And you say, no, don't worry about it. You've really put yourself in a world of hurt. Yeah. Like, you've directed your children away from the creator of the universe. That's a big deal. That's a big deal. That's a big deal. And so, well, you want to hear what her advice was? Okay. It says, many deeply spiritual people are agnostic. Sure. Sure. Yeah. Most, many deeply spiritual people could carry the weight. That's how I feel about everything. Hey, Carpet Factum here is kind of getting ticked off by this saying, Slow Night, you guys are quoting Dear Abby. We're not quoting Dear Abby. It's a bit. Get with it. We're helping Dear Abby. You want part of this action or not, Justin? We're giving better advice than her. We're not quoting her for entertainment purposes. We're pointing to maybe a more Christ follower type answer to the masses. Exactly. Not everyone can just exist in your bubble, Factum. I'm talking about it. Let's finish out the Dear Abby so Factum can get back to watching the show. The way to raise open-minded, tolerant children is to talk to them about your values and model that behavior for them. It doesn't have any values. Hold on. Parents convey their values verbally and by demonstrating them. As to the question, is there a God, you and your wife should discuss that question in advance so she can have some input and you can handle this. Because your ultimate decision determines whether there really is a God or not.
Truth has nothing to do with it. Right. As long as I've discussed it with one other guy and we're in agreement, the Lord does or does not exist. I love it. This is the advice to the people. Cheryl and I decided there's no longer a speed limit on Merle Hay Road. We'll see how that works. But, officer, we've discussed this. I discussed it with my wife and we portrayed it to our children. Exactly. This has been a lie from the event. We're more gathered together, right? Exactly. Exactly. It took a vote. In my name or not in my name. I guess it doesn't matter. We agree. It's weird, though. That guy's perspective does bring up something that I think tends to be the case. That people that tend to find themselves falling away from their faith are always doing so outside of the biblical resource, right? Yeah. Like, and then they tend not to go back to the Bible to try to reaffirm. Like, that's one of the things that I really have gotten stronger on in the last three years, say, compared to ten years ago, is when my faith was tested, I shut my eyes. I closed my eyes. I closed my ears because I didn't want to hear any more about it. Because I thought, you know, I believe what I believe and I don't want to hear any of this because I'm good. But that wasn't a, that really wasn't a faith. That was an ignorance. I was believing in the right thing, but, like, if I had grown up with something different, I could have been in that exact same position. I closed my ears. I make the la-la-la sound and it's gone, right? Like, as opposed to when my faith is tested now, I go back to Scripture and re-verify where I'm at or where I'm supposed to be on that. Have any of you guys ever had, like, a direct confrontation with someone who didn't believe what you believe at all? Absolutely. And they wanted to battle about it? Yeah, absolutely, yeah. What's your tact?
Hit me. I don't know that I have a great tact. Your God is stupid. Yeah, well. Or no God at all. Yeah. Whenever I was, again, in the electrical field and I had an opportunity there, not that I don't have opportunity today, I do, but I work in a different line of work, so I don't have to be careful about what I say, you know? Right. But it's just the nature of what I do. I'm in sales, you know? But when I was an electrician out in the jobs and I had this one super in particular that I would always try to bring it up, bring up Christianity, bring up my faith, and talk to him about it. And I said, I mean, I guess probably at that point in my life I learned more what not to do almost than I learned what to do in terms of witnessing because I did make a pretty bad mistake once in the sense that I said, and I wasn't trying to condemn him or make him feel like, you know, he was just wrong. You know, you're going to hell. Yeah. Even though that may or may not have been true. But I actually said the words, you know, the problem with you is, and that's how I started the sentence, you know? And I was going to bring it around to the problem with what your thoughts towards me are is that, you know, that you don't have to lose all your fun to be a Christian, and that's the point I was going to get to. Right. So I started the sentence off with those words. He cut me off right in midstream, you know, and he goes, that's my problem is that you think I've got a problem, you know? Yeah, yeah. So I don't know that I have a great tack, to be honest with you. Well, I don't even know if there is a good one. Like, I mean, I understand complete with saying I work in the construction field, you know, and, you know, I don't ever have any luck with the direct sales, like ever. And so I almost quit doing it. I thought, you know what, the only thing I can do is I can example. That's all I can do. That's what I was going to get around to. Yeah, that's the best witness I think you can have is when you do smash your finger with your hammer or whatever, that you're not the guy that's running off at the mouth with, you know, this long line of expletives. And, you know, when you stub your toe or whatever on the job or you're having a bad day, you're not the guy that's always got something negative to say. You're not the guy that's the first one to laugh at the dirty joke or tell the dirty joke, but you're the guy. When someone says, hey, look what I got on my cell phone, you're the first guy to walk the other way. Exactly, you know, you're in the world, but you're not of the world, you know. That's, I think, the best tact you can have. Like you were talking to me, you've got to befriend these people. You've got to be an example, and to do that, you've got to befriend them and be around them. Yeah, and it's an almost, you know, letting the lamp shine, you know what I'm saying? Like they have to see something in you that they want, you know.
I mean, and that sounds kind of, I don't know, I don't mean it to sound, you know, high above or arrogant or anything. Man, that's not what I'm getting at, but they want to see like a quality of life that they're like, I don't understand what that guy's deal is. Like every day he comes in here, and nothing ever seems to be a problem, you know. Right, they see that in you that they want, but that's the beauty of Christ, is they see that thing in you that they want. And it sounds arrogant, but the truth of the matter is, it's not you and it's not me. Right, it's Christ within you. It's Christ within us. That's exactly right. Yeah, the song, you know, I like to call it Street Jesus, but just because I like to do that. But I love that. We were talking about it, innocent as doves and snakes. Shrewd as snakes. Shrewd as snakes. Shrewd as snakes. You know what I'm saying? Like, I mean, you have to, you've got to shrewd as snakes them. You've got to street Jesus them, you know. If you show up, you know, in their face clown style and, you know, blah, blah, blah, Jesus, Jesus, you know, they'll turn you down. They'll shut you down right there when they listen to you. But if you just drop it every once in a while, you know, every three weeks, it just happens to come up, what's doing this weekend? Well, I've got some church stuff to do, what you've got going on, you know. And then maybe a year later, they start figuring out that you go to church quite a bit. And maybe that's something they should check out. You know, who's to say that might not work like that at all? But you know what? It might. Sure. All you can do is give it a shot. Exactly. Yeah. I dig it. Street Jesus. I need some theme music for that, but I'll get to it. Street Jesus. I say I can't make it cheesy because I don't want to take Street Jesus down with my bad tunes. Were you doing it as Brass Monkey? Kind of. Street Jesus.
I'm rolling with a street Jesus. Shrewd as snakes, innocent as doves. Don't hit them with a devil club. All right, that's enough. It's a work in progress. I thought for sure you were going to say, I got my devil pants on. I think they're gripping my calves. It's a skirt, all right? I don't wear no pants. But my friends sleep around and they're really big. It's the new Judgmental Christian Show. Apparently it starts at quarter to 11. You're listening to Live from the Path. Am I ready for some tunes? Yeah, broadcasting live from livefromthepath.org. We're going to take a quick break, just a couple minutes, and get ourselves ready to ship up some tunes here. So we're going to go on a quick break for you, and we will be right back. You've been listening to Live from the Path. Thanks for hanging out with us through the break. You were listening to Live from the Path. We are in studio with On This Rock. What's the first tune you're going to play for us? This song is basically just a song about a passionate walk with Christ and just wanting to be so close to Him and so in His presence. It just feels like you just catch on fire, basically. I love it. All right. Take it away. On This Rock. I just can't seem to get it right But I don't quit I just hold on tight What if I It's been so long The darkest isles come just before dawn Hold on Though my mind tells me otherwise I don't care I still stare deep inside myself
To see the missing part of this cold hustle Inside the sea Though my mind tells me otherwise I don't care I still stare deep inside myself To see the missing part of this cold hustle So I can Down between Until my pride And Lord I'm standing That was great. Yeah, I got you. This is called I Will Not Be Shaken. This is probably one of our earlier, more upbeat songs. And this is basically just about standing firm in your faith. And with a catchy little all-sing-along kind of a tag at the end of the chorus It just simply says, I will not be shaken, except we say it kind of cool, so… Sweet. This is On This Rock with I Will Not Be Shaken. If like you're stuck in a rut Can't get no way You've just been out of luck Well, there's nowhere to go When you're sinking in sand So before you fall Let me give you a hand Well, there's no will if you're living So repeat after me This is my battle cry I will not

And I don't know What any of this stuff is Because I've like You know Been a pretty healthy guy The TEE is when They go down through your mouth Which gives you An even closer view Of your heart And they're like Okay we've scheduled A consultation with the surgeon Today At 2 o'clock And they said I have a An ascending Aortic Aneurysm Okay And you throw those Words together It's like wow They usually get those In the autopsy Right You know It's like That's a pretty serious Pretty serious deal And of course Google is the expert So I read all this stuff And it's like I mean I'm a walking time bomb I'm a time bomb
And the stuff The doctors are saying Like okay Dude This is serious I'm like Isn't that what John Ritter had? Yes Exactly what he had Yep Thanks Isn't that what Happened to John Ritter? Many people you know Who died This died of us And anyway Long story short They've done all these tests And put everything together And I went into this Consultation today Fully expecting Open heart surgery Because that's the only Fix for it It's an easy fix But they gotta Rip open the chest And break your You know Do all this stuff And then they fix it And then you get on With your life And everything's fine I had no heart issues
And my wife and I Are like Man We weren't expecting this You know And we go in there And like we're fully prepared You know Especially with my As young as I am It appeared to be Even more of a chance I'd have surgery Because they want to fix it You know And we get in there And he's like Well you know I don't think you need surgery What? You know And basically I don't want to get into All the details But I mean They looked at the valves That you know Are doing things And where my aneurysm The ballooning Is like at the root Of the heart And they said If it had expanded Which is what they were saying They had done It would have pulled The valves with it
Which would have been Issues There would have been Leakage and all this stuff And I didn't have any Everything's great So anybody sent me home And said oh Good luck I mean Everything's fine Just keep your blood pressure down There's no diet restrictions No I can do I can work out I can You know I would tell people I can't shovel And can't lift heavy things Set up, tear down That kind of stuff Church Just vacuum I can vacuum Probably clean the windows But I mean That's been a crazy ride For the past few weeks You know I mean Literally thinking At any moment I'm going to die It's to the surgeon going Oh yeah There's your okay Why don't you go on
And He said If you shop around You can find a surgeon Who would probably do this You know But I would say don't I'm like Okay I'm good So yeah That's been kind of crazy That's been my That's been my story Yeah Well that's That's real forward to me God's a miracle working God Right? Yeah Exactly And we had people Literally all over the world Praying You know It's kind of fun When you have You just kind of Connections And people know people And all this stuff And I was getting messages From people in Thailand And I can't even think Of all the places now That was just kind of
That's kind of cool And of course All over the country too And So I didn't I wouldn't pay any attention To what you're saying Thailand No I was just saying That Did something happen to Dan? No not at all I was just saying The man The gas prices are high Right now It's crazy Take a vacation Oh man What a time They have elephants there And And it's really kind of neat Yeah Don't watch the world go by I haven't had anything like that Happen to me To me Personally But I've My son When my son was born My son is two years old now And my son's name is Malachi Paul And When he was born
He had Some breathing issues And he went into NICU For a while Which We were never really That concerned about it Just because Of the nature Of what The doctor said Was wrong with him It was just kind of One of those things Where you need to keep An extra close eye on him For a while So he was there for a while They wanted to keep him there An extra week And we prayed And You know His condition Got to the point Where we could take him home We took him home And My two daughters The first stage of their life So They don't sleep Right None of my kids sleep And They're always like Hyper And wound up
And They stay up as late As they possibly can And you think They'll at least sleep in And no They still get up early And so You know A few weeks into Us having Our son home For the first time The last child We plan on having And You know My only son And we get him home And About three or four weeks Into it He starts sleeping Through the night And we're thinking Man this is great You know This is our last child He's sleeping through the night And And then my wife Kind of would comment That man He sure seems to be tired All the time You know And I've
I've not had Like a heart problem But I've got a condition Where my heart beats rapid And sometimes very hard Pounds in my chest And I've I went through this phase In my life Just as a little bit Of history on me Where I worried About that constantly And I mean I went to The emergency room Drove myself to the emergency room A couple times And had EKGs done And the whole bit So I kind of know What that process is about So I just Kind of told her And then I got to the point To where it happened So many times The doctors kept saying You know what You're fine I can put you on Some medication for this But you really don't need it Because you're fairly healthy So you know You could just calm down You know And things would probably be alright
So I got to the point Where I sometimes feel it coming on And I just blow it off And get to the point Where I get really calm about it So I kind of told her The same thing I was like You know He's probably like me He'll be fine You know I didn't pay much attention to it So they had a scheduled checkup It was either It was within about a week Of her saying that Maybe two weeks at the most And everything was looking Pretty good in the checkup And she listened to his chest And I wasn't there But you know I guess she kind of Made this funny face Like I'm going to make An appointment for you Take him down And have his heart listens to And so we're kind of like Okay And the appointment Was in the emergency room Downtown And so my wife comes home And gets me And like you know We need to take him down
To the emergency room And so we took him down To the emergency room And they listened to his heart And they did an EKG on him And the attendant That took the EKG Because of how young he was And a lot of times Babies have faster heartbeats anyway Sure She goes Well it looks a little fast to me But I don't I don't see anything Obviously she was You know She was young Kind of inexperienced in her job And so she said I don't think I see anything wrong So I'll let you guys Go ahead and go home So she sent us home We no more than got home And the doctor That was the attending Cardiologist specialist that night He called us back that night Said I need you guys To come right back down here right now And when you hear something like that About your son You know your child I mean I started like thinking Maybe I need to get down there For myself
And so We get right back down there And so my son's got this condition What they told us I mean he looked The cardiologist we have Is an awesome cardiologist And he looked at it He told us right off the bat He goes We can try this treatment And if it doesn't work Then you know What I'm pretty sure it is right now Is what he's probably going to have And so he had him diagnosed Right off the bat It's called PJRT Permanent Junction Reciprocating Tachycardia Is what my son has So basically my son has an extra node Inside of his heart That causes his heart to Instead of going Blub-dub, blub-dub, beat back and forth It triples around And so You know 90 to 120 for a child My son's was around 250, 260 at rest And that's why he was like Wiped out and tired all the time Anyway The whole point of my story is this Is so You know We're scared parents Sending my son into the ICU portion of the hospital
And he's going to be there What the doctor told us For probably up to two weeks For us to try to get his heart rate Under control on medication And knew very little about the condition That my son had Thinking you know Obviously this could be something Very life threatening Had we not have caught it And the heart wasn't squeezing right Because of how fast it was beating Anyway You know God can do a lot of things He can do an absolute miracle I believe And heal somebody instantaneously Or he can use the doctors He gives us knowledge And gives us wisdom for a reason And he gives us the ability To produce these wonderful medications Right And the doctor called Another specialist in Iowa City That he had been talking back and forth About my son's particular case They put him on a particular medicine Again We go in the hospital Friday night Say you'll be here about two weeks They put him on a particular medicine Friday They said it's going to take about Six, seven hours for this medicine Before we even know If it's going to work or not
They came back in at 11 o'clock And said we've changed our mind We're going to put him on a different medication And they put him on the medication At 11 o'clock And by one o'clock My son's heart rate went down To 70, 80 beats a minute For the first time Probably in over a month I mean just instantaneously Leveled his heart out His rhythms were right And we took him home With a clean Not a clean bill of health Without the medication But as long as he's on the medication He has zero restrictions And that medication worked We took him home Monday morning So we weren't in the hospital for two weeks We were in the hospital for two and a half days And we took my son home And not only that He can have the ablation procedure Which is not an open heart procedure You go up through the groin And burn off the extra node That will theoretically What they tell us Will fix it permanently And then no medication after that And no medication after that So you know God is a prayer answering God And for you know Something that seemed pretty perilous
For a couple young parents to begin with To have that kind of relief You know And my son is an absolute Complete healthy two year old And if you saw him As long as you didn't see us Give him his medicine At 8pm or 8am in the morning You'd never know That there's anything wrong with him So Awesome That's a cool story Yeah I thought I'd segue into that It felt right And now Game show Stop motion Oh man It's so terrible We're having We're having Number two computer issues still Oh man Sorry I hate when that happens Boy Alright Well We'll put some money into that one It'll straighten it up to you Welcome to everybody's favorite game show Secular or Solomon Alright If you don't remember Here's how the game works

I'm on this one I turned my back on And we brought out the iPad You know what I'm saying? Okay Where were we at again? He's Solomon I said Solomon I said secular We're secular Jeremy's gonna go Solomon The answer is Secular I will not be shaking And that was a Russian proverb Which is Nevermind Close to Pakistan As you make your bed In fact I believe we got That came up in church Not two weeks ago About the Salvation Army man Saying that we should not Have the attitude of Just you made your bed Now sleep in it Yeah That was in that video Yeah That little quote Yeah That was just a rip off From the Do not be deceived Whatsoever a man Reap so also
Shall he sow That's just a You know I knew a Pakistani A lot of these are rip offs Wait a minute That was a cool video I agree That video was hip He sounded like Winston Churchill He was over 100 years old It's a live recording Of a Salvation Army dude The guy who founded Salvation Army Yeah And he was like We'll leave the poor They won't leave them To be the poor Whether it's their fault Or yours Help them He sounded real gravely Yeah It was a cool video It was black and white It looked real grainy And here's the thing They put the words on it And if you have extra money Buy a six But they put the words on it So you could hear What he was saying Because it was You know
It was an old poor recording You really couldn't Yeah But then the font was so poor It's like I can't even read the font You know It was like old English Or whatever I was like I still You know Sometimes they have fonts That are so fancy You can't even Like is that a D Well I'm doing the best I can here Okay Not everyone does a solid Impersonation of the man Oh Man Here we go Next Do not forsake wisdom And she will protect you Love her And she will watch over you Solomon Absolutely Solomon We've got a flying insect in here I'm going Solomon I love flying insects We broadcast from a cellar There's also moonshine We've got bugs And space constraints Sweating
Do not forsake wisdom And she will protect you Love her And she will watch over you Secular Or Solomon Solomon That's a straight vote for Solomon Except for Mike Proverbs 4 Whatever I said Solomon this time I know what's in your mind But you didn't listen to me And the final round God gives to those Who get up early Secular It's kind of like God helps us Who help themselves God gives to those Who get up early Secular Or Solomon Second Timothy Third Timothy Third Timothy What is it We're getting a secular On the chat Alright The answer is I'm saying Solomon Secular We need to keep a Running tally Of Mike's
Poor performance On secular Versus Solomon I don't know Old Testament things I know street Jesus That's it That one again Is the Russian proverb Likely instituted During the Stalin era It is a government level Propaganda of God gives to those Who get up early So get up out of bed And make the whiskey Or vodka Whatever it is They do in Russia Because you are Your brother's keeper Yeah What Now is it bad advice Really What do you mean Give me something In the Bible That refuses That the Lord Gives things to people Who rise early No one works The third shift That's what you're saying I do not see my family I drive camp
For family I drive camp 5am You drive camp 9pm God not like you I don't do a good Russian No I'm so terrible I wish I had a better I don't do impressions I'm awful Well I do them But I shouldn't Right Let's put it that way No one sees them As impressions Do we need to do The outro Solomon Or No forget it Alright Alright it's out Forget it The wheel's already Off the cart On this jive Did you hear The Jesse Anderson tune No It was choppy Oh man We gotta get some stuff You might as well Have to pull start That computer you brought In here

And he said I got a question For you I said go I got up early Mike I got up early Mike God bless me He said Do the ends Justify the means And I said In what way He goes For Christ Do the ends Justify the means And I answered him And I didn't have any Bible verses to back it up And I was very sorry That I didn't I didn't come up with Anything off the top of my head My answer was Is that As far as I'm concerned And I think as far as The Lord's concerned The means Are what equals the end Like You don't You don't find anybody That's done One great cause for Christ And therefore
Yay You know That's it I mean The way that you live Your life Is how it counts Is what counts And so The ways Is what Or the means Is what produces A end That gets judged And so I said No The ends Never justify the means Ever Ben Dan Do you have any Do you have any Thoughts offhand I agree I mean With you That You know We're called to be holy We're called to be people Of integrity And High moral character And So
I'm trying to think Of a situation Where If the The means Assuming The means Are In some way You know Evil Whatever Because you had A godly result That's okay I can't Think of a situation Well actually I have There's a biblical example Yeah Kind of And this is And Paul was writing About this right When he got put in prison He talks about The other guys Who were out there Now preaching more boldly They were doing it For their own Glory Or to show that They were not Not afraid They wanted to be The strong
The brave preacher So Paul was stating That they were doing it For that reason But he didn't care Because God was being preached And they were making money And all that good stuff Yeah exactly So like The means for them Were As far as Paul was concerned Is they were doing it For the wrong reasons However He was okay Because it was still Being done I'm not sure That's as It's not a similar Example Because They're not technically Violating biblical principles To do it Now They may have a heart issue But technically Their means Are leading to that end And Paul says You know what That's okay
God's word is still Being preached Yeah It's not the ends They really care about It's not the ends They really care about I mean They're Like you say They're just making cash Well I think There's a distinctive Difference there Between Like God being I'm sorry What kind of Difference was that Dang it I'm sure there's A difference there What's wrong With that indistinctive A noticeable Separated difference I'm just asking I just was interested Why do you have to I love language You make me look Like a secular I think there's A noticeable difference Between God being able To use all situations And situations That are being used
For the glory of God You know what I'm saying Like if you're saying You know These fellows are out And about for the wrong reason The Lord is still using that To get his message across That doesn't make Those fellows Any more direct reflection Of Christ's character That just makes God Using what is out there To be used Well couldn't that Always be true Well I don't know Well does that mean I mean a guy A guy could be juggling Naked ladies for profit And Christ could use that In some way or another Yeah that's true For profit even I don't think anybody does that I think I think you'd have a hard time Finding naked ladies That would do it If there's no money involved Hey I have a job for you I got up early I'm assuming Phil Was coming from The point of view Of if he has a goal in mind
That's going to be Honoring Christ somehow It doesn't matter How you get there I mean Well I think Well like for example Let's say you're trying To build a church And the numbers You're in the numbers game You know like You got 100 people You're like I want 200 people I want 200 people In this church It's got to be good For everybody The more people Hear Christ's message The more people Will get saved Right So you go after them And maybe you're not I don't know 100% honest On what goes on At your place I don't know How you would What kind of trickery I mean There's innocent Get people in the door Like you know We have free child care
And coffee and donuts You know Just come in and relax You know But that seems Honest enough You know We're just trying To make it easier For someone to get in But if you're like I don't know Let's say you tone down Christ's message You know Let's Change the truth Yeah Let's say you totally Water it down So look God's really okay With what you are All you have to do Is believe that he exists And you know That's fine You don't have to do anything You know You don't have to witness Or proclaim to anybody Who he is You don't really You know There's nothing to be done All you have to do Is realize that Christ loves you And that's enough
Well so let's Matthew 16 26 I think speaks Pretty directly to that And it's What good will it be For someone to gain The whole world Yet forfeit their soul Or what can anyone give In exchange for their soul So I think To that specific thing We're saying You're giving up Your soul To gain the world The more people The whatever Right That's a grand end To gain the world But you've given up Your soul to do it So like If in the process You're forfeiting your soul Gaining the world Is nothing Well tell me Tell me where The two meet then Right So if If If If the ends Don't justify the means
But Christ is still Being preached Like the crystal cathedral Or these televangelists You know That They seem to run A for profit operation But Christ is still Being preached So Are we Are we against Their operation As bystanders Or I mean Because Paul covers that too You know Like some eat meat Some don't eat meat Some eat vegetables Some others Don't eat vegetables Some wear cloaks Some don't eat cloaks Whatever You know Christ's word is still Being preached here So you know Don't make it a big deal About it Well I guess Dan That's the question Is Is there Is our distinction here The difference between
People that preach Truth Or I guess For your folks Mike The people that Avoid truth They preach Happy Avoid truth Versus the people that Perhaps don't even Preach truth Or preach Skewed Truth Do you understand What I'm asking You're saying The people who On purpose Don't preach it In order to Attract more people Or the people Who don't really Know they're not Teachers I'd say the first one Right The people that Don't preach Well but I think Is there a distinction From If we're looking at it From that Paul perspective Is there a distinction
Between people that Just frankly Don't give you A complete picture On purpose Versus people Who are not Preaching it correctly Who are giving you The wrong message Intentionally For the greater gain Of their church I mean I think Paul's just kind of Looking on the Positive side there Or hey at least Christ is still Being preached Because he also Goes pretty heavy And hot on False teaching In different areas Of the scripture And he doesn't say Well hey at least They're still talking Part of the bible I mean I think I think you gotta look At Christ I mean Christ Is an example I mean he If he's our example
He never Where did he ever Water down His message I mean he went Very boldly And proclaimed You know Himself And I don't think That we can Water down our message To say that I don't think We can do things To attract people Untruthful I think Christ Is the truth And if we don't Proclaim that Fully Just to bring People in I think that's wrong So is there An action to be Taken on our part When you see Stuff like that Going on I think you gotta Steer clear I mean like he Brought up You know where Paul talks about False teaching
And I know You know that's Talked about several Times throughout In the New Testament There especially Like in Is it Peter that Talks about that And Glaciers That's pretty hard Yeah And yeah I mean if something Especially in The you know Paul thought he was Living in the end Times but We realize that he's Not wasn't But you know And it talks about How people want To have their ears Tickled You know people Are drawn to Something That Is People don't like To be confronted About their Right Makes them feel good About themselves
And their situation Run to whatever Their itching ears Right Right Yeah Timothy there I don't think That's what Christ did Right I mean yet he was He was gentle You know with the Woman at the well He didn't The woman that Was standing Before him That had The Pharisees Around him You know that Were accusing her Of adultery Yeah And you know what That was And that was Like one of the Cool stories Because he let The bigger sin Shake out You know like I mean And it's stories Like that where You just realize
Just what a fair And awesome God You have Because I mean She's the obvious Crime here You know But they're the Obvious They're the more The less obvious Sin going on You know what I'm saying Like their judgment Of her You know Was more of An affront to Christ Than her initial sin To begin with You know And he sat there And let it shake out Just like he wanted And I love reading that story Even slowly I just like to read it And just watch it happen And go Yep Jesus got you on that one boys That's one of my Absolute favorite stories I love it But because you know what I think I'd have made I'd have made a mistake There
You know like I can see myself exactly As one of those Pharisees Going yeah She did it You know She did it She adulterated Whatever Blah blah blah Down You know And then You know And then I just I remember the first time I read that story Being so embarrassed Because I knew I'd have been On the wrong side of that I know I was totally Going to be on the wrong side of it And so I don't know It really It's easy to jump on the bandwagon Yeah Like it just It really shoved me In my right place Like you know You better watch Where you're pointing that finger Friend You know Same thing with Ooh We were talking about
The wrestler dude That's what That's what That was going to tell you Did you see that kid this week? With the girl? Yeah yeah The boy that refused To wrestle the gal Yeah And so Ben and I were talking about it And trying to decide What like There was a couple weird things About the thing About the media's portrayal Of this kid anyway You know Like they repeatedly said He was homeschooled Trying to You know Make it real obvious That he's out there You know And He's a freak And his parents Are fundamentalist Fundamentalist Christians Is that what they said? Yeah And like I'm trying to figure out If there's even A biblical issue here
Well so So if Just a quick Refresh So there was a kid At the At the Iowa State Wrestling Tournament State of Iowa High School Wrestling Tournament He basically got There's two girls Historically That made it into This wrestling tournament He's ranked third In the state Yeah He's a good wrestler He has And basically He got slaughtered With one of these ladies And his His basic quote was As a matter of conscience And my faith I do not believe It is appropriate For a boy To engage a girl In this manner A summary Of kind of What he had said And so he basically Forfeit the first round And then went on
To some consolation rounds He had faced this girl In the same manner before And done the exact same thing Like this is not new He had done the exact same thing Previously So I guess The first question From your perspective Is there really A faith issue here? Mm-hmm We've been talking about this too My wife and I And some friends and stuff And I don't know If there's like Direct scripture I mean there's There's the whole idea To honor You know women And I mean That's a pretty Legitimate thing I think the difference here Is like He's not walking Down the hallway At school And slapping her Upside the head Like I'm going to take you down You know She Willfully
Entered the ring You know It's just like And he mentioned Somewhere in a contact In a quote somewhere About This is combat You know And I'm kind of thinking Okay so If I'm At battle And the enemy Happens to have a woman With a gun coming at me You know I'm trying to think Am I just going to lay down My weapon And say Okay wait And shoot me Or am I going to say Well it's one of us Right You know I really respect him not You know Doing I think It's because of political Correctness And it's just Stupidity That the whole thing Happened in the first place It shouldn't have even happened
You know A situation shouldn't have happened But You know I've gone back and forth Part of me says You know If I'm a wrestler And this girl's going to come in the ring And say I want to I want to take you down Well Make sure She Is beat bad enough She doesn't want to come back Well I mean That sounds kind of bad But My son I was a wrestler And my son Had to wrestle a girl this year And he didn't And he came up with me Before the match And he didn't want to go out I wouldn't want to do it He didn't want to do it Yeah And he let her I don't know if he let her win He just He wouldn't wrestle He just Went out there
And It was kind of creepy really It was He was really Didn't He just didn't want to do it But But he did it And I know it was very uncomfortable for him But Yeah I mean it's just It kind of just violates What you really believe Is your faith Is You know We're kind of to lift up women And to Honor them And You know To just Toss them around And You know It just doesn't seem right Well I guess The question for me For what you were saying In your war example It's not apples to apples But like If otherwise We're supposed to have An uplifting You know
Bride type of Breains of women From Christian culture Just because the woman decides To crawl around in the weeds Like Does that Does that change your responsibility You know what I'm saying Like Like God doesn't just say Lift up the polite women Right He doesn't just say Lift up the women That deserve to be lifted up Right Because if You were to treat the women Like Like Christ treats the church And we're lifted up through Christ And we certainly don't deserve it So like You know If If you're supposed to To lift them up And honor the women Regardless of their actions Regardless of the choice she made To put herself in that position Does that opt him out From that responsibility I mean That's a good question I don't know that I have an answer
Other than That part of me That says Well she really wants to be there And I'd probably do the same thing I probably just wouldn't wrestle I'd Say You know I'm not going to do it And I was trying to think If that was my son You know And then he asked me Right What you would say to do And I can I can honestly At any moment Go either way I'd say Well take her down so hard She never wants to wrestle again And let her know This really is a man's combat sport Or just back out What if she whoops you? She might Then I'll whoop him No Then I'll talk to her daddy Actually I know her dad Amber Yeah Cassie Herkelman's her name Yeah Her dad's Bill Herkelman
He lives in Waterloo And they're a nice family I think the biggest issue here Is not What you're standing up for I think the media's missing The big picture That somebody's actually Standing up for something Yeah Know What young kids do you know That they'll actually Stand up for something Yeah I mean I was impressed With his Decision I was impressed with all parties I thought they all handled He handled it well She handled it well I mean like Take all the cameras out of it And whatever Like this situation Would have been come and gone He As far as he's concerned He did the right thing And respected her And as far as she's concerned You know As far as I can tell She said I appreciate what you're doing I understand We're not going to make an issue out of it
It's fine And then it comes and goes He said As a father of two daughters I would never in a thousand years Allow my daughter No To go into a wrestling A men's wrestling team I agree with that I mean not in a thousand years I say You are a woman Act like it Or join a women's wrestling team That's awesome If you want to They don't offer women Start one I mean Start a one girl Women's wrestling team They have here There's a girls There's a girls There's a girls wrestling competition Here in the state of Iowa I mean There's an all girl tournament Or find something they offer And join it You know That you like But to me I mean You can mix genders In certain sports Right
Sure If there's not enough guys And they want to play volleyball That's one thing It's not a full contact sport Where two young people Are wearing nothing but spandex When you're at a point in your life Where you're Right I mean let's be honest We've all been there Where you're feeling certain things At that age in your life You know You're discovering the world And that's not a position I would want my son in That's not a position I'd want my daughter in Especially You know To I mean Right They almost lucked out That you know She runs across A nice kid You know That has respect for women Like this in the first place You know Think about the opposite guy That you went to high school with Right That you're sending your daughter Into the ring with
Well let's take this You know This is a late night Christian show And I'm not going to get You know Off the wall here But This was in the news This was an honest to goodness story In California right I don't know if you guys heard about this A couple of weeks ago You had a sexual assault charge Filed from a younger boy On a wrestling team Against an older boy On the wrestling team That His point was Is that the older boy On the wrestling team Was trying to humiliate him And And he performed A so called Legal move And I wasn't a wrestler But a legal move Called a butt drag Right And so the younger kid Claims that During this move That He was Penetrated by The older wrestler's
Fingers Right And so that That was an actual case Alright So this was An older wrestler Trying to make A statement On a younger wrestler Right Some little bullying A little peer pressure If this goes wrong Between two boys What's eventually Going to happen Between a guy Making a statement Against a girl Alright So this is I don't think School systems Really fully appreciate In this day Of political correctness And women can do Anything men can do What kind of lawsuits That they're going to Open themselves up to In just a few years Whenever some girl Gets in there And whether it really Happens or it doesn't All she has to do
Is assert it And because she's a girl I mean the media And everybody Will be on that Like white on rice And it'll be I mean all over with Yeah That is a tough situation Yeah And the adults Put them there Yeah True I mean Right because nobody's Nobody's adult enough To stand up and say You know what No This is the way It's going to be Because these are the rules Period That's why I go back And forth It's like What would I do I know what I would do With my family You know A father of girls It's irritating Because it gets all Into political I would say that it's From that girl's perspective
You know It's not the choice I would have made But they certainly Have the ability To make it The structure of society Has allowed that choice To be made You know Shame on them Yeah You can't blame the kids In this situation For doing what They've been allowed To do Yeah I mean go run for president That's cool Right You know Go do I mean There's lots of stuff They can do You know It's not like my son If he wanted to go On the girls Volleyball team In a thousand years I'd know You know It's the girls Volleyball team Right What if you wanted
To be like the towel guy Or the timekeeper Like a manager Or something That's a whole Different ball game I don't care Alright good It's not But you know Why take a girl's spot On that team You know That's what they say Well the guys Can't play volleyball Because it's taking One of the girls Scholarships away Potentially It's like Well what about The girl taking The wrestling scholarship Away You know You go back and forth And it just gets silly It goes in circles You know And I don't know The adults need to Start being adults And you know Tell the kids Just the At the football scholarship Yeah
Yeah I mean That's just my thought Yeah There's you know Well and I think That was one of my big questions Is what does it say About our society As a whole That this was even Such a big deal You know Because we talked about All the parties involved Frankly Looked at a young kid All the young kids Like the girl And the boy And said look You know They made a decision This guy made a decision He The dude stood on On principle Regardless of whether You agree with those Principles or not Who's Who's he impacted He's He's impacted himself He's taken his own Ability away To win the tournament Okay
But beyond that He's not screwed over Anybody else He's not forced Anything that he has Upon anybody else Okay His point of view He's not shoved On anybody But that's what The coverage is The coverage is Is this kid right here Every single one Of the interviews That I saw Where they were Asking questions They want to say Well what faith is it What faith is it Tell me what his faith is What are they supposed What are they going to do With that Like there's going to be A faith that says By the way Don't wrestle girls Right You know what I'm saying Like what are you going to do Go figure out what this is And then try to They were trying to Try to convince him That he's taken his own faith
Too far That was the problem They were trying to Right the wrong Somehow this kid Has been raised crazy And if only we could Find the fallibility Of his faith We could write his head So that he knows How much he's really Given up by not Continuing to perform In the high school State wrestling tournament The kid stood on Principles and his faith And he's getting whipped Because he decided He's going to miss out On the high school Wrestling tournament That That is the societal problem That's the The society's reaction To this particular issue Is the way bigger gap Than whatever this guy Decided Frankly he could be A Wiccan for all I care And he says Look as a Wiccan I don't wrestle girls I'm not going to do it The guy's at least
Standing on principle I disagree with this Principle if he's a Wiccan Right But whatever You know I have nothing to say To that guy He's only He's taking himself Out of the tournament He's not negatively Impacted anybody else He's standing for Something fine That's his deal Yeah thoroughly impressed With him Standing on that principle And he gave up a lot Yeah You know A guy could come in there And potentially do really well In the tournament I don't know where he ended up at But he I mean he only I don't think he He showed up From what I understand Yeah he So he would just have been a default And he would have Because you have to lose twice To get out of there And he got beat Then the next
He did I know she did I know she did The next two He won He wrestled and won He won And then he lost And he was out And it was weird That I found some similarities Between this and another story And this was the Biebs The Biebs was in trouble Justin Bieber Did an interview With Rolling Stone And so his response To a question He got asked a lot Of weird stuff But his One of his responses was I really don't believe In abortion It's like killing a baby And then they asked him How about in case of rape He says Well I think that's really sad But everything happens For a reason I don't know how That would be a reason I guess I haven't been In that position So I wouldn't be able To judge that
So I guess first of all The first thing That came to my mind About that was Is it right for him To be asked that question How old is he? 16 Wow Well I mean In today's culture I mean how many kids Are sexually active At the age of 15 and 14 So why not I suppose In this culture Yeah my first reaction Was no Like that seems inappropriate He's just He's just a young kid But then I had That exact same thought I thought you know If a guy at his age Isn't thinking about The impacts of their actions Things like abortion We're on the wrong track So you know what Maybe He's putting himself In the public Maybe it is A good You know Frankly
I think the question Wasn't asked For a good reason I think they were Because regardless Of how he answers that He's got trouble Oh yeah You know what I'm saying Like he can't answer that In a way that doesn't Cause him problems 50% of the people Will not like him Right Exactly But look at his answer He says look I don't really believe In abortion Alright He's been taking heat About this thing All week And I thought You know He's in the same boat As this wrestling dude He's a guy He didn't ask For the attention Of this question Now He may put the The ability To be asked that question On such a broad stage That's in his hands
For having been famous Anyway Right But he didn't bring this on He didn't put up a billboard He didn't post it on his website He didn't put it on Facebook Hey by the way I don't believe in abortion Okay Someone asked this to him He answered the question Honestly And moved on This wrestling guy Is in the same position Right He didn't bring this on It's a circumstance He found himself in He reacted how he felt appropriately And then Everything blew up around him Like these are just Two young people Standing for what they believe in And what's really disappointing Is how the society Starts painting in the Landscape around So the people screaming Tolerance Were not very tolerant Of his answer You're saying Agreed Yes And actually
I thought Because that's the toughest one I thought his answer About how about in cases of rape Was a pretty fair one It's great It's not the baby's fault It's really sad I think everything happens For a reason I haven't been in that position So I wouldn't be able To judge that He answered better than I would have Yeah I'm not very tactful I was like Well should I kill my neighbor If my dog gets hit I mean How does that Is there two different people I mean That really was I mean There couldn't have been A better answer For a 16 year old kid Yeah Yeah Yeah For a 16 year old kid And a lot of the outcry Is about Is about parents Who are concerned That their children Are now being influenced
By his position Oh Oh Influenced by a guy With a little morality Boy that just sounds terrible Yeah Well you know What I find You know what I find weird though Is I think What you find The people who have The strongest resistance Will fight extremely hard To keep other people's Viewpoints Out of the ears Of their children But do nothing To instill anything Strong Either way Into their own Okay you didn't You didn't hear them Saying anything When there were Half naked ladies Dancing on the stage Behind him At the Grammys You know what I'm saying Like you didn't hear Any public outcry then But when he's asked A simple question Or loaded question
And he answers With a simple answer Now we got big problems Yeah I mean if you're not Going to outcry At one bit of morality What you know Why do you think You could outcry At the other one You know if I don't know That's outrageous That's a good answer I thought it was a good answer I respect him for that answer I just thought I thought it was interesting That within this span of time You have You have two young people Who Whether they brought it On themselves or not Ended up on a giant stage And the reaction Of the world around them Was Extremely disappointing Just how they took it It was just Extremely disappointing What? He's looking out the window And the camera's kissing Who's looking out the window? This guy right here

Holy Holy Lord Almighty We reach out our hands Come and save us Lord Blessed Father Lord of life You're all I need To see me through Sometimes I lose my way But time after time And you're the only thing And the more I see The more I find That was On This Rock You've been listening to Live from the Path Have a wonderful week We will see you next week
