Segments
- Show open and studio lineup 0:18–1:53
The episode opens at the Pathway Studios in Johnston. A host introduces himself by name on-air ("My name is Ben Foost," seg-00015) and names the studio lineup: Mike Foost (seg-00021), the Hudsons (seg-00020), Troy Spanglinger arriving (seg-00019), and special musical guest Ashton Powers (seg-00022–00024).
- Tonight's lineup and opening riffs 1:53–5:36
A host previews the show: a round of the game Deuteronomy Dan (seg-00031), a CNN article on phrases mistaken for being in the Bible (seg-00048–00060), a riff on what makes someone a "scholar" ("Dan Hudson, scholar," seg-00081), a joke about a new-Christian pamphlet cover model ("I'm voting brawny man," seg-00086–00100), and a bit on toilet-paper commercials featuring a bear (seg-00105–00126).
- Ashton Powers interview: background and songwriting 5:38–12:40
The hosts interview musical guest Ashton Powers (introduced at seg-00134–00135): born in North Carolina, now living in Witten, Iowa after meeting his wife (seg-00140–00152); picked up guitar at nine after hearing Elvis Presley and learned "Don't Be Cruel" in an hour (seg-00165–00186); started songwriting at twelve (seg-00238–00260); plus riffs on Gwen Stefani's "Hollaback Girl," modern country music, and a Conway Twitty wig joke (seg-00260–00316).
- "Speak, Honestly" performance 12:41–17:36
Ashton Powers introduces and performs his original song "Speak, Honestly," a surprise song born from a conversation with his wife about modern country music (seg-00318–00329).
- ReverbNation, show shirts, and co-host jokes 17:36–22:04
After the song, the hosts compare it to a movie soundtrack and discuss Notting Hill (seg-00335–00383). Ashton plugs ReverbNation.com/Ashton Powers and credits his wife with running his music operation (seg-00385–00402). The hosts riff on show merch — zero shirts sold — and Father's Day gift ideas including the "secular Solomon" and "big Solomon" shirts (seg-00417–00463), then joke about making Ashton a co-host if he moves closer (seg-00464–00478).
- First jobs: dishwashers, paper routes, and blackjack 22:06–27:36
Asked about jobs before music (seg-00479), Ashton says his first job was dishwashing near Seattle, Washington (seg-00483–00505). The hosts trade their own first-job stories: Godfather's Pizza and Spaghetti Works (seg-00523–00534), paper routes by bike in Ankeny and by loud car in Atlantic — including throwing a paper through a front-door window (seg-00535–00575) — and one studio voice's run of short-term jobs: shuttling checks at the airport, dealing blackjack at Meadows, and being banned from every Godfather's Pizza (seg-00590–00619). The bit closes on whether Godfather's still exists in Des Moines (Hickman, seg-00621–00631).
- Recap and "Lullaby for My Family" performance 27:36–32:39
A station recap plugs the YouTube channel and ReverbNation for Ashton's music (seg-00644–00653) and mentions an August military homecoming event in Creston, Iowa (seg-00654–00668). Ashton introduces "Lullaby for My Family," written for his wife and kids (seg-00669–00676), and performs it (seg-00677–00680).
- Facebook likes, busking, and wedding ushers 32:39–43:40
Reactions to the song praise its honesty about marriage (seg-00682–00700). A debate follows on whether to chase people who don't "like" you on Facebook — illustrated by a John Macmillan story and Ted Danson jokes, plus the hosts' habit of replying to negative YouTube comments but ignoring positive ones (seg-00750–00824). Ashton answers travel questions (never left the US; wants Italy and England), a marmoset-smuggling joke, whether he'd busk in Europe, and the "exotic attraction" shirt idea (seg-00826–00920). The segment closes with the church connect-slip joke about burning down the store that sold Dan his shirt, the meaning of "good sermon," and wedding usher tyranny (seg-00921–001026).
- Broadcast schedule and next week's preview 43:41–45:11
Promo block: the show airs Mondays 10 to midnight on livefromthepath.org and Sundays 4–5 on Praise 940, AM 940 Des Moines (seg-01027–00031). Next week brings hip-hop artist Echo (heard on Pulse 99.5) while Dan is on vacation in Washington, D.C. (seg-01034–00048).
- Which celebrity would be your buddy? 45:17–57:37
A rapid-fire round: Ashton's five-year music outlook (one step at a time, wherever God leads; prefers intimate venues, seg-01062–00083) and then the celebrity-buddy hypothetical — who would actually like you back if you met them (seg-01391–00392). Picks include Elvis, Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell (Ashton); John Stamos and Dave Coulier of Full House; Russell Crowe — with a bit where Ben imagines calling him "a phony" until he weeps (seg-01207–00231); Bill O'Reilly (Dan, seg-01291–00298); Danny Glover, Sandra Bullock, Reese Witherspoon, Ed Holmes, Jason Bateman, Steve Carell, Kevin James (Danielle); John Krasinski and John Goodman; and Luke Wilson.
- Scary stories and fire-escape pants 57:38–1:01:39
Chat-prompted scary stories: Ashton's all-night Michael Myers/Halloween marathon ended by his sister looming over him in an It clown mask (seg-01451–00479); a studio voice's tale of grabbing a guitar in his underwear during a suspected break-in (seg-01481–00485); and the running bit that a man in a house fire must wear pants to be effective, while sweatpants are "for women and children" (seg-01491–00535).
- Supporting touring musicians and festival preview 1:01:42–1:04:42
The hosts plug the show's YouTube channel (near 50,000 hits, seg-01551–00559), ask listeners to support a touring band whose green van broke down via a PayPal fundraiser on the show's Facebook page (seg-01577–00597), mention musician Kevin Lindgren's gigs at the Greenwood Lounge and Vaudeville Muse (seg-01598–00613), and preview the Spirit Midwest Festival in early August with a possible remote broadcast (seg-01615–00627).
- "Playing Out Backwoods Country" performance 1:04:43–1:08:10
Ashton introduces and performs "Playing Out Backwoods Country," a self-explanatory song about being a country boy (seg-01628–00639).
- Break montage, host roll-call, and news bits 1:08:15–1:16:49
A break montage airs — including a fake "REMAX Studios in downtown Des Moines, 6 a.m." intro and rapid-fire bits (seg-01644–00788). Returning, the three hosts name themselves on-air: "My name is Ben Foost," "My name is Daniel," "I'm Mike Foost" (seg-01789–00793). News bits: Macho Man Randy Savage has died in a car wreck (seg-01836–00840); Ashton ate seven and a half Slim Jims and a box of Everlasting Gobstoppers on the drive in (seg-01817–00833); and "scaf" is defined as "everything but Ashton Powers" (seg-01851–00865).
- Deuteronomy Dan: food-law edition 1:16:49–1:33:04
The full Deuteronomy Dan game show: "With your host, Dan Hudson" (seg-01895), who reads ten laws while the studio (including guest Ashton Powers, plus Troy and Danielle) guesses "Deuteronomy or Dan" (seg-01882–00910). Laws: flying insects unclean (Deuteronomy 14:19); organs of any animal (Dan); eating found-dead animals (Deuteronomy); goat cooked in its mother's milk (Deuteronomy 14:21); debt cancellation after twelve years (Dan — the real law is seven, Deuteronomy 15); no cutting or shaving for the dead (Deuteronomy); the Mario Brothers green one-up mushroom and flapping arms in the temple courts (Dan); cross-dressing (Deuteronomy 22:5); drinking a mother goat's milk in front of the kid (Dan); ignoring a brother's straying ox or sheep (Deuteronomy 22:1). The game closes with a sung "Deuteronomy Dan" theme (seg-02365–00380).
- Podcast and website promo 1:33:04–1:34:03
A short promo block: sign up for the weekly podcast at livefromthepath.org and catch past performers on the website and YouTube channel (seg-02401–00416).
- CNN's "That's not in the Bible" and what goodness means 1:34:04–1:44:01
The hosts discuss a CNN Belief Blog article titled "Actually, that's not in the Bible" about phrases people mistake for scripture: "God helps those who help themselves," "spare the rod, spoil the child," and the claim that Satan tempted Eve — noting the Genesis account only names a serpent (seg-02417–00451). They push back on the article's scholar, Sidney White Crawford of the University of Nebraska, who defined biblical goodness as "defining one's worth by what one does for others" (seg-02467–00484). The hosts argue goodness belongs to God alone ("you call me good… God alone is good," seg-02499–00501), that the Bible is not a self-help manual, and that recognizing one's need for Christ's death is the stumbling block (seg-02507–00599).
- "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" performance 1:44:03–1:47:51
Ashton performs the old gospel song "Take My Hand, Precious Lord" — his favorite and his mother-in-law's favorite, chosen since she may watch online later (seg-02601–00612) — followed by praise for its sincerity (seg-02615–00616).
- Favorite hymns, the Gaithers, and beatboxing 1:47:51–1:57:05
A hymn conversation: favorite gospel songs and a lost CD of southern-gospel music (seg-02617–00634); a Sanka/Maxwell House coffee-smoothness bit ("the Barry White of coffees," "the Donny Osmond of coffees," seg-02635–00663); Ashton's memory of George Jones's "I Can Live Forever" from his dad's gospel album (seg-02671–00675); Elvis's "American Trilogy" and "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah" (seg-02678–00687); and Bill Gaither — someone in the studio says they sang on stage with the Gaithers twice — plus the Gaither Vocal Band's "It Is Well With My Soul," Guy Penrod, and pianist Anthony Berger (seg-02738–00822). The segment ends previewing next week's hip-hop guest Echo with a beatboxing audition ("boots and cats," seg-02824–00882).
- The pamphlet guy and show close 1:57:05–2:00:14
The hosts revisit the new-Christian pamphlet cover from the opening: the model looks like he should "travel to Wyoming, grow a mustache, and comb back your hair" — and "skin a possum" (seg-02916–00938). They admit they never got to the basic tenets of Christianity and defer them to Dan's return (seg-02941–00943), thank Ashton Powers, plug ReverbNation and the YouTube channel (seg-02962–00972), preview next week's show with Echo and Dan on vacation (seg-02973–00976), and sign off.

Live from the Pathway Studios in Johnston proper. Live from the Pathway Studios. It's a balmy Monday evening here in the Pathway Studios. Mike, are you dressed for it? Of course I am. Fresh undies every day. As soon as it starts to get more than 80 degrees, every day fresh undies. That's not what I was asking. Excuse me. Pardon me. I may have asked the wrong question. I overreacted. You are listening to Live from the Path. Again, coming live to you from the Pathway Studios here in Johnston proper. My name is Ben Foost. Thanks for being with us. It is a full and robust studio here tonight. In fact, we're still packing them in. Spanglinger is getting ready to make his way in. The Hudsons are here. Mike Foost is clean and ready to roll. And we have a special musical guest. Ashton Powers is here. And we're going to be hearing from him here in the first hour.
He's going to play some tunes. Tell us a little bit about himself. See what he's got coming up. I'm pretty excited for it. And beyond that, we have… It's just a killer show. We have a Deuteronomy Dan coming up. It was such a hit. People love the Deuteronomy Dan. So we're going to give you a law. And Deuteronomy Dan, you have to tell us whether that is Deuteronomy or whether Dan made it up. I tell you, I go walking down the mall and people come up to me and say, Hey, do you have any Deuteronomy or Dan? It's embarrassing. Then they ask for spare change. Well, they do. Yeah, they do. I don't have any. What? I'm not sure. Okay. All right. So we have Deuteronomy Dan coming up. We're going to talk…
There was a recent article about Is That in the Bible? It's about the common misconceptions people have of what is actually in the Bible. And then there's a quote from a guy, some kind of biblical scholar in there, that said, frankly, the most asinine thing I think I've heard in a long time, biblically. And I could be way off, or maybe he's way off. What's that? Did you say he's a scholar? He's a scholar. I'm impressed. Okay. So we'll check him out. We'll see what he has to say, and we'll see whether you agree with it or not. Self-proclaimed or credentials of some sort? CNN says he's a scholar. What does it take to be a scholar? I don't know. Don't they say that, isn't it, when you're going off to college, you're now a scholar? So this guy could just be a guy who at least told someone he was going to go to college. I'm assuming he had some type of degree of some level that would qualify him somehow as a… I don't know. As a scholar. How do you decide you're a scholar? I don't know. Maybe you just decide.
I mean, like, mechanics got to have to take a test to be like a master mechanic. I mean, no matter what field you're in, you have to have some test. I think you have to have someone else call you it. I think so. Like you're a gentleman and a scholar. Exactly. As soon as that phrase is said to you, you, sir, are a scholar. You can use that on your business card. Dan Hudson, scholar. Has someone said that to you? No, never. Oh. We're always going to be talking about the basic tenets of Christianity. And I'm going to give you a chance… So there's this pamphlet of a guy out there, and I'm going to give you a chance to tell me who he looks like. I'm voting brawny man, but I don't want to sway the vote. I think you just did. So you'd be… Oh, hey, they feminized the brawny man. He used to look way more rugged and masculine, and now he's just a little bit Francine. He's a little metro. He could sandpaper down your woodwork with his mustache, and now he couldn't scuff his shoes. That mustache is not what it used to be.
He used to really be… I mean, he'd eat a tree if he was hungry. Not anymore. He's not brawny. That's pretty sad. Where are the men? They're gone. Oh, what did I see? One of the paper towel commercials was trying to go up against… Oh, they were trying to make fun of the quiltedness. Anyway, do you see the… Sorry. Okay, I'm going to mention this, and then I'm going to drop it. Nowhere in two minutes talking about this, but have you seen the paper towel… The toilet paper commercials with the bear with the stuff on his behind? Oh, yeah. The business. What is that supposed to imply is going on with the toilet paper? Like, does that happen to you? You walk out of the bathroom, and you have potches of toilet paper on your… I've never noticed it, but I don't always look. Because, I mean, that's the wrong stuff. If that's what's happening to you in there, maybe you should switch. Maybe the technique's wrong.
But in either case, I don't find it all that clever. I don't ever sympathize with the bear and say, you know what? I've been there, dude. I should have quilted northern. Yeah, yeah. It's not right. All right, so we're going to do basic tents to Christianity. Nope. No idea. I wrote something else down here. Well, I hope we have something else going on. All right. Let's get to our guest. Sitting across from me is Ashton Powers. How are you doing, Ashton? Going pretty good. Going pretty good. We're glad you can make it down here. It was actually at least a tiny bit of a drive. Where are you from originally? Stay down in Witten, Iowa. So about an hour and a half drive. Not too bad. Were you born in Witten?
No, I was born in North Carolina. Oh, really? How did you end up in Iowa? I met my wife. She's from Iowa, so… That'll do it. You know what? That happened to me, too. I met my wife, and she lived in Altoona, and we wanted to move to the south side, and that's what happened. You do what the ladies say, you know? They want to move to the south side. That's what happens. Say, yes, ma'am. I hear you. That's right. Oh, you don't have a thing. I'll scream it. So tell me a little bit about how you got into music. When did you start playing? Basically, as soon as I could pick up a guitar, I was beating on it, strumming on it. I was about nine years old. That's whenever I was into Elvis Presley, and so I begged my dad to show me, like, three chords, and I'd leave him alone, so he showed me…
That's all you need to go a long ways, and then you have to kind of, you know, go on. Oh, yeah. Three chords, you can play Elvis on. And so he said, all right, three chords, and he's like, go practice. It'll take you a while. Just practice, and after about an hour, I came out, and I was like, oh, okay, I can play Don't Be Cruel, and he's like, okay. And I started playing it, and he was like, oh, yes. You really can. You really are playing Don't Be Cruel. And so just went from there, and just listening to all kinds of different music, and trying to figure out different ways to beat on the guitar, and seeing what sounds would come out of it, and then just from there, it just went into songwriting when I was about 12, and so it's just kind of a natural thing, I guess. Cool. So it was Don't Be Cruel. Was that the first song that you ever learned? Yeah, with the guitar, yeah. With the guitar, yeah. Yeah, yeah. Do you still play it? You break it out? I don't. I should play it now.
Mike, you're the bops. Ready? Sitting home all alone. Bop, bop. I don't know the word. Bop, bop. Well, at least, please. A telephone. I don't be cruel to a heart that's true. Remember that? Yeah, remember that they… Hold on a second. If Ashton had any sympathy in the world, he would have broken into that and done better. Yeah, why do you leave us hanging, Ashton? I let it stew. People don't normally entertain me, so I mean, they don't normally sing for me. We don't normally entertain anybody. Generally, when you see a train wreck, you don't jump on. Today was no upsets. Yeah. That's going nowhere quick. I'm in. That looks pretty rough. We better stay back.
Well, I could have jumped on. It would have been like, oh, brother, we're out there. There we go. Well, you were part of this, Dan. No. Okay, so when did you start? How did you find… So you learned on the guitar. You got to practice in some tunes that you'd heard of. How did you get into songwriting? What kind of pushed you into that? And was there a point where you really felt like you were producing something? Because there's a point where people are trying to write songs, and you're looking at stuff, and you're like, no, that doesn't sound like anything. And then there generally tends to be a point where it kind of clicks, you know, and you feel like, you know, yeah, I'm putting out something like this. This means something to me. I feel like it means something to other people. Like, was there a point like that for you? Where you kind of find your flow, your style. Yeah. Well, when I first started writing, I thought, I was about 12, 13, and I thought, wow, this is, I'm really good. And then by the time I was 16, and I hit 16, 17, getting older, and I was writing more
mature songs, you know, than what I was, and obviously as I got older, and, but I went back into the archives, and I was listening to some of the older stuff and looking at some of the lyrics, and I was like, wow, this doesn't even make sense. It's like, I'm singing about glue, and it didn't make any sense at all, and I was like, glue is awesome. Glue me back together. Me and my friend glue. There really was the lyrics to one of the songs, glue me back together. Oh, nice. And just as I started getting older, and just, I mean, just going through life and experiencing life, things just started coming together, and for a long time I wouldn't play any of my songs for people, because it was just like, just didn't really think it was good enough, so I finally got to the point where I started playing things for people, and a lot of people just related to it. They were like, you know, I've been through this, I've been through that, you know, and that song relates to this, and I thought, oh, wow. So I was like, you know, that's kind of how I got to the point where I was like, well, I must be doing something right, because people are relating to the songs, and they're getting involved on a personal level with the songs. You know, that's what kind of disappoints me about some of the music coming out today. You know, like, you ever heard that song by Gwen Stefani that's called, I Ain't No Hollaback Girl? And people listen to that and go, you know what? I ain't no hollaback girl.
That's dead on. I really identify with what this song is saying. You know, I just, I can't imagine people like, yeah, this is my jam. This is my theme song. I am no hollaback girl. I don't know. I don't know. I don't do it. I don't do it with any attitude or anything. Obviously, I'm not a hollaback girl. That's just what I'm saying. That's like country music nowadays, you know. I mean, I like the older country stuff to me. You know, Conway and George and, you know, the older stuff. People say I look like Conway Twitty. It's kind of scaring me a little bit. Yeah, I'm telling you. I was waiting. I thought you were going to start singing Hello, Darling, but he didn't. It's not my time to shine. You know what I'm saying? Sometimes I have to hand the stage away, just like Conway would have done. I appreciate that. Yeah, it's no problem.
Maybe you didn't do it on my time. It's Mr. Twitty, though. Sorry, Mr. Twitty. If you're going to refer to me, you refer to me as Mr. Twitty. Or don't refer to you at all. No one talks to the Twitty. Well, like today's country music, like, some of it I do like, but some of it, I don't know. It doesn't sound country to me, and some of it I just don't understand. Honky-tonk, but knock-a-donk. I don't get that. Actually, I listen to that song in my room and weep. That's me. It brings me back to a time and place where I just, you know, I was something. I don't want to know how you realized you had honky-tonk, but knock-a-donk. Well, I had my Conway Twitty wig on, and I was in the mirror, and I was looking, and I'm like, oh, yeah, this is the stuff. Was it a full-size mirror, or? I bought it specifically for my height. Okay. I want to make sure I got everything. See, this is where you're a sucker, because you bought a Conway Twitty wig in a mirror. I just bought a mirror and drew a Conway Twitty wig on it, and then stood in the right spot.
Yeah. So then it would just be there. You looking at me, Conway? I know you're looking at me. Well, I tell you what, let's go ahead and let you perform. Tell me a little bit about Speak, Honestly. Speak, Honestly, is a newer song, and it just kind of came back. I was sitting and just messing with the guitar, and me and my wife were actually sitting and talking about country music, and just saying, you know, man, the country music today is not like it used to be. A lot of it sounds pop and rock, and we were both talking about that, and I was just sitting and playing, and the tune came out, and lyrics came, and it was just like, okay, well, we got a song here, and generally, my songs have something to do with my life in general, but this one doesn't have anything to actually do with any events in my life, but it came out, and apparently, got quite a few people who are enjoying it off of YouTube and Reverb Nation, so it seems to be doing more than what we thought it would do, so it's a surprise song. Cool. Well, this is Ashton Powers with Speak, Honestly. Go ahead. There's a light, and a flame, and outside, a silo, baby, tell me, be gone to sleep, when I go out, with our friend, they start to act so, when I slip up, it sounds like it should be on a, like a movie soundtrack. Yeah.
Oh, yeah? Yeah, that's hip. Yeah. I see it. Yeah, I see it. Is it, well, here's what I thought, I thought of Donning Hill. That movie? Yeah. Yeah. I don't know, I don't know what about it, it made me think of it, but that's what it is. That's what I, do you remember the, oh boy, fellas, do you remember the scene in Donning Hill where they were walking through the garden? Yeah. Yeah. They were on one of the, you know, the private gardens. I don't know, that's what I thought of. For Joseph, who sat beside her. Yeah. Sit with me. Have you not seen the Donning Hill, Dan? No. Oh, it's a classic. I haven't either, I have no idea.
No clue. No, Naughty Hill. No clue. Naughty Hill. Dan? I don't know why those kind of movies. It's a regular movie. Oh. It's girly. I've seen it. A lot. Naughty Hill? No, no, no, Nodding. It had Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts in it. Oh, oh, I know you're, yeah. I know you're family friendly. Yeah. Who said Naughty? Dan said Naughty. I can't have Dan in it. What a disaster. You're setting me up for the wrong type of soundtrack. That's not, that's not what we're after. That was, that was great.
And so, if you, if you'd like to hear more from Ashton, including that song, you can go out to ReverbNation.com and do a search for Ashton Powers. I think it's just, I was just looking it up to see what the, if you had to type it in. Yeah, it's just ReverbNation.com backslash Ashton Powers. And you can, you have clips of your music. Oh, there's some videos out there. It looks nice. It's nice looking out there. It's better than my Conway Twitty stuff, I'll tell you that. Well, that's, that's my wife. That's all I did to my wife. I mean, she runs all the brains behind it. I, like I was telling you earlier, I just show up with my guitar and I sing and she gets everything running in order. And if it wasn't for her doing everything, I, I wouldn't be here today because I wouldn't have known anything about, I wouldn't know how to do this. I wouldn't know anything about it. And she just really started looking stuff up and, and, um, I'm not sure how, she came across you guys and, um, and we sit down and looked at a couple of things you had on there and we're like, watch some of the previous shows and the music. And you still came? Yeah. Yeah. I mean, there's some junk email folders that we can sneak by.
The back of my shirt ripped up because, uh, she literally drugged me in. So, but now that I'm here, I, I, I like it now. It seems all right now, now that Naughty Hill is out. Oh man. I don't know. I can, I'm going to have to edit that or something. That's not good. All right. You've been listening to Live from the Path on livefromthepath.org. Uh, you can catch us during the week on livefromthepath.org. You can see, uh, past performances, including those from this week from Ashton Powers and, uh, links to archived shows. You can sign up for the podcast, hit the email. Um, and you can order, you can order shirts. Hey, we have sold no shirts. I can't believe that. Here's the problem. Uh, I don't have any free cash. Otherwise, we would have sold one shirt. I tried to get, uh, my wife to get me one for Father's Day. I wanted the secular Solomon shirt. It's coming. Yeah. How many weeks until Father's Day?
Like, two. Two weeks? There's plenty. Here's the deal. Uh, uh, for those of you out there that are listening, and let's say you wanted to get me something for Father's Day, uh, I would also like, uh, a live from the Path's shirt. Uh, I, I don't know. There's a nice orange looking one that looks pretty fancy. And then there's the big Solomon. I want the big Solomon. Actually, I'd rather have the big Solomon than the secular Solomon. I'd rather have the big Solomon. You know what? I'd rather have the big Solomon. It's a perfect gift for any dad. The big Solomon. I think all dads everywhere would like to have one. Yeah, they're like, what's that? That's Solomon. I mean, if you have friends anywhere. I mean, China. Yeah, the Chinese love Solomon. They love Solomon. They try to copy his Proverbs all the time.
They're wise people. That's where the game came from. It's classic. I don't even know what you're talking about, but I'm sold. I want one now. Yeah. This guy's a classic. We've got to have him on all the time. You know, if you did not live so far away, you would be a co-host. You want to move, Jamie? It's a good reason to move. If you ever had a reason to move, you should say, but I've been invited to be on the fastest growing internet show called Live from the Path. How many can be like it? Yeah. Let me put it this way. I no longer live on the south side. I moved to the parking lot. I've had to move. You've moved on. To accommodate. All right. So what did you do before? Did you have any jobs like you did before you were doing music?
Any like a waiter or a grocery bagger or anything like that? What was your first job? My first dishwasher. Where did you just watch that? I was staying up near Seattle, Washington. Wait a minute. Wait a minute. I got North Carolina. Yeah. Washington. Is that it? Where else have you been? If I had a map where I could put pins on, how many pins would I put up? How many pins were you planning on buying? You know, they've got different pack sizes. Are you a criminal? I wouldn't tell you if I was. Speak honestly. You're among friends and people that want a reward. You've got to buy some shirts. Yeah. So anyway, Washington dishwasher. Yep. I was up in Seattle, Washington for about a year, and I needed a job.
So they needed a dishwasher, and I fit the bill. That's how jobs go now. That's my favorite part about them. Hey, can I come in? Sure. We'll pay you money. Deal. Yeah. I have no sound. Yeah. I fit the bill. Washing dishes, that's our man right there. He's our guy. Yeah. What? Quit looking at me. I'm not. I was trying to think of what my first job was. I worked at Godfather's Pizza. I washed some dishes. I did a few dishes. Yeah. If you don't count paper route routes, I worked at Spaghetti Works. That was my first job.
Washing dishes? The salad boy. You were the guy that ran out and filled up the salad bar? Yeah. And then sometimes I would help back up with dishes. But not very often. I had a paper route. You had a paper route? Oh, years and years and years. Did you do it by car or by bike? Bike. Oh. And then later on, as an adult, I had one for a while in Atlantic. I had two routes. I did it by vehicle, and I had a loud, obnoxious vehicle. And so I'd start delivering papers at like 3 in the morning, and then they would call a police officer to me every day and say, sir, your exhaust is too loud. And I would have to say, dang it. And so what I ended up doing was just no more. I didn't even call and tell them. I just stopped delivering them. By the way, I'm not doing this. I got fired. I said, look, you tied my hands here.
I had a crappy vehicle. That's why I have the paper. I was trying to get a better vehicle. But obviously, you can't tolerate it, so I quit. I threw a paper through someone's front door window once. On purpose? No, no. I thought, I'm going to try it like they do on TV. I'm driving my bike. And I'm like, steak. I don't know how they knew it was me. Paper wedged in there. We blasted all over it. Where's that young man in that bright green shirt that throws the papers? I'm sure it's him. That was in Ankeny. We lived there for a while. So I was like, junior high. Are you a criminal? Just in Iowa. Just that vandalism with the paper thing. I try to avoid Ankeny for that reason. All kind of hillions on bikes tossing paper around. Did you ever have, as paper fellas, did you ever have papers delivered?
Would you sign up for the paper and get it? I used to. And I'm so philosophically different from them, I couldn't give them my money. So I had to cancel it years ago. Years and years and years ago. I can't do it. All right. Mike, where did you? They agree with nothing they say. Where did you work? Troy's not going to be like, you're a loser. That was the Godfathers. I worked at the Godfathers and the newspaper delivery guy. I worked at the airport shuttling checks between the airport and the bed. I worked as a blackjack dealer at Meadows. Wow. Yeah. There's like ten other jobs I'm forgetting at the moment. But I've had a lot of short-term work. That speaks to my volumes as an employee. Every time I'm doing it, they just don't send me them back. But when I quit dealing with blackjack, I wrote them a full-page resignation. Like I wrote, in the year of our Lord, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. On this date, I submit my resignation to you.
And it was a crappy job. And so I was real smart about it. So I'm not allowed to work at the Pernodos anymore. Actually, I've been banned from working at the Godfather's Pizza because I tried to get it going because of management. So I can't wait to work at the Pernodos anymore. I tried it once, and the owner, who owns the one that I work at, found out I was applying at a different one and personally drove up like two hours to tell me that I was not allowed to work at any Godfather's Pizza anymore. Nice. It was a disaster. Is his name Kane? Oh, man. I will. I've changed my ways. I was not a good employee. Are you still allowed to eat Godfather's Pizza? They were most certain my wife will not give it to me. Yes. But God's outrageously priced anyway. We go there very rarely, but I like it when I go. I just never think about it. Are they even around here anymore?
Yeah, Hickman. I think Southside went up. The one on Hickman's still all right? It's still about it. That's still about it. I didn't even know they existed here anymore. They're a bit, as pizza chains go, they're a bit stiff. They're a bit stiff. I like my favorite pizza. There's the humble pie, but no one in the family likes it. So I always just get what everybody wants. I said, yeah, that's okay. But if I were to sneak off of myself and order a pizza. I don't even know what that is. I don't either. It's a good bunch of stuff I found out of life. A bunch of meat. Riveting. All right. You're listening to Life in the Path. I like it. This is really taking… I mean, this is tantamount to that underwear on the Bears Behind story. You've been listening to Life in the Path.
We're live in studio with Ashton Powers. We just heard Speak Honestly, and like I said, you'll be able to hear a copy of that on our YouTube channel. But also, you can go to ReverbNation.com backslash Ashton Powers, and you can check out clips from there. Also see what he's got coming up. It sounds like you've got some cool stuff coming up. In August, there's something going on in Creston that has to do with a homecoming for some folks in the military. Is that right? Yeah. Is that a public event? Can other people attend? Any idea? As far as I know, like I said, my wife takes care of the ins and outs of that, and she would have more information on… She's thumbs up, yeah. Public event. Yeah. Okay, sweet. So, apparently, yes. Okay. Very cool. It's an open thing. All right. Well, let's go ahead and let's have you do another one. Maybe tell me a little bit about Lullaby for My Family. It's a song that I wrote for my wife and my kids, and it's pretty self-explanatory.
It's just one of those songs just basically, you know, saying how much I love my wife and my kids, and I just thank God every day that he placed me in her life and the kids' life and placed them in my life. And it was definitely prayers answered, and so that's pretty much what the song is about. Very cool. Well, this is Lullaby for My Family by Ashton Powers on Live from the Path. The very first day, I don't wait that I'm married. My hand and your eyes sparkled bright. And to find real love at a fairy tale store. I'd rather feel like little kids. You know why? Because it's honest. And it's got a pretty serious, you know what I'm saying? I mean, like, you very rarely find dudes that write tunes about, like, they're thankful for their wife. You know, it's usually some, I don't know, crazy story how the kids are tearing up the house and their wife's some kind of crazy woman. You know what I'm saying? Or that someone besides their wife is hot. Yeah, exactly. Exactly. That's awkward. You don't like my songs? Come on, honey. Really, it's about you. Really, Conway Twitty's the greatest. I'm just saying. Yeah.
No, it's very cool. It's a very nice song. I'm sure your wife really likes it. Yeah, the kids really like it. Boy, it'd be awkward if she didn't. Yeah, it would. That really stinks. Boy, Ash, I just hate that. You couldn't have played a different melody with that? Stick to note writing. Or if you play it and you get done and you're like, and she's like, huh? What's that? That's pretty. Could you do that again? How was that? Like, the very first time that you played it for her, how did that go? It went great. She cried. The kids cried. Yeah. And then I cried. It was really good. That's the older it should go. Wife, kids, then you.
Oh, it's okay to cry as long as you're the last guy. Yeah. You don't want to be the first one weeping. Did you see what happened with the bear in those towels? My wife cries when I sing, too. When you sleep? When I sing. Very good. That's a very good song. I really did like it. Thank you. What's happening? I was talking to my imaginary friend. You should meet her. Troy has some of those. Thank you. Many. I left my camera at home. Oh, brilliant. He's got a delivery. So you are listening to Live from the Past. I do hope you enjoyed that song. That was Lullaby for My Family by Ashton Powers. Can we catch that one?
Oh, I should have checked to see whether that was on the Reverb Nation. Well, you can check that one out now. Anyway, you can find out what's going on in Ashton's world by going to ReverbNation.com slash Ashton Powers. You can check out the song clips from him, any gigs that he's got coming up. You can like it on the Facebook. You can like him on the Facebook. He's under Ashton Powers Music. You can search for him. If you don't be, I like it. Yes, like me. Like me a lot. Tell me, Mike, what should Ashton do if they don't like him? What do you mean? You mean on the Facebook or just in general? What would be the appropriate thing to do? If you said, hey man, like me on the Facebook, and then you checked it two weeks later and it didn't happen, is it appropriate to follow up and say, how come you didn't like me on the Facebook? Yes, I'd hit them with a direct question. I'd say, so what is it about me that you don't like? Yeah, and they'd probably say the fact that you're asking me why I didn't like you on Facebook right now. You're an abrasive personality.
Yeah. Yeah. Well, then I'd have to say, okay then. I guess we see IDI. I don't know. Can you dislike somebody on Facebook or you can just like them? No. You can write nasty comments and stuff, can't you? I like how you've got your way around the Facebook hierarchy. Okay, John Macmillan is like a worship dude if somebody doesn't know who he is. Some fan, well, I guess it wasn't a fan, some person wrote all over his Facebook wall about how they didn't like him, blah, blah, blah, but then they got a personalized letter from him, a message. So now I've decided, that's the way to get people to talk to you. Yeah. You've got to write nasty, like, you're awful, and then they'll talk to you. Yeah, they'll be like, why do you think that? You're blah, blah, blah, and then you've had a personal contact with them. That explains most of my notes I get now. There you go. That's awesome. So then you can be like, well, I personally know him because I talk crap to him and he talked crap back to me. Exactly.
I've been going about this. It's better than autographs. You can bond over that. That's a good one. Yeah, because, I mean, how often does, I don't know, Ted Danson, get someone on there and says, hey, Ted Danson, I love you so much. I love your work in Cheers and your hair is fantastic. Love, Ted Danson's number one fan, Teddy Danson. Like, how often does he get that? He's like, oh, yeah, that guy's crazy. But if you're like, Ted Danson, you've got the face of a walrus. Love the guy that really doesn't like you. He gets their attention. Yeah, he'd be like, whatever. Well, but that's true. We do that, though. When we get negative comments on, like, YouTube and stuff, we're all geeked up to respond back to them, like when we had the Atheist Convention and whatever. And, you know, people write comments where we're like, whatever. Then we head back at it. But people say great stuff on YouTube all the time about the artists that we've had in and we're like, oh, that was sweet. And then we move right on. No personal.
No personal comeback. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. We're a negative machine. That's right. We're part of the problem. Oh. How do we get out? I have a question for you, Ashton. Okay. Okay. You've been, you live from North Carolina. I love that area. You've been to Seattle, Oregon. I mean. Washington. Washington. You're one of them college students. Just like with Dan, please run your questions through Ben. I'm bad with geography, too. Sign up for me on the Twitter. I do posts on the Twitter. I'm sorry.
Go ahead. Okay. Anyway. Two of my favorite places. You're in Iowa now. Iowa's a great place. Have you been to Ireland and Australia? No. Okay. I've not been out of the United States. Yeah. But that would be awesome. Italy. I want to go to see Italy and I want to see England. If I ever. You haven't made it out yet? No. Well, no. Because they won't let you out at the border? Ashton? Because there's a warrant for your arrest? There it is. It's funny you mentioned the border. That's funny.
Okay. That's all I had to say about that. Okay. Good enough. I got caught trying to smuggle a marmoset under my jacket. A what? A marmoset. What is that? I don't know. It's kind of like a sloth looking creature. Why? Do you know that? You can keep them under your jacket because they'll cling to you like a monkey. Isn't that like a lamer? It's just something to think about. I don't even know if that's true. I can't even tell if what's going on is true or not. The marmoset. What do you know about this? Let me ask you this. Yeah, please do. If you were to get to Italy or London or somewhere, would you be willing to busk, like be one of the street musicians out there? Would you do that?
I guess I could try it. I don't know. I never really thought about it. I just thought about going and visiting, but… No, there's financial gain to be had. Oh, really? Yeah. Plus, because not everybody knows English, you'll be an exotic attraction. People are like, that's a foreign language. I've never heard of it. No, I'm an exotic attraction down here. That's true. Especially with that whatever crazy animal Ben's talking about attached to your side all the time. I'd be willing to pay you at least a dollar a shirt if I could produce a shirt with you smiling on it that says the exotic attraction, because that's neat. That's a cool shirt. Hey, honey, we just got another idea for a shirt. For the merch table. I'm saying it would be awkward if I wear it, but it would be pretty cool if you're wearing it. Yeah. Just make it for myself. The exotic attraction.
That's a free dollar coming your way. It's a high premium. I'm going to charge you lots of money for it. You know, you should really talk to Dan about this. Dan is known for his shirt apparel anyway. Yes. I think that stands on its own. My shirts are awesome. I want to know now, who exactly filled out the connection slip in church Sunday? What do you mean? Someone, either Mike or Jarrah Foost. I should have grabbed it. I don't even know. I think I may have burned it. I'm not sure. Because there's a place on our connect slip. There's a little thing you fill out at church. Hey, we're here. Blah, blah, blah. And it's like, how are you going to respond to today's message? One of them and their family put on the connect slip something to the effect of, I'm going to find the store that sold Dan his shirt and burn it to the ground. Really? Yes.
Yes. I have it in a file because someday at an arson trial, I'll be able to pull this out and say, yes, I can see them doing this. And so, it's going to work well. I'm just going to say, I was a party to it. I wasn't the whole thing. But I may have been the delivery guy. Cheryl did say, you know, I saw Mike give Jarrah something and then walk away. And she put something in the… Think about it the other way. Mike received something and put it in its correct place in the right private cabinet. That's awful. That hurts my feelings a lot. That was a beautiful shirt. It's an outreach ministry. You know what I'm saying? The connect slip is everything to everybody. You have to use it to its full potential. But see, here you are responding to my negative comment. If I was to say, Dan, good sermon, you're just going, oh, and then put it away. You never thought about that again? Yeah. Pretty solid. No.
Do you think he personally responds to compliments on the sermon? You never know. You know they said if people come up to you, it's a standard line amongst preachers that if people come up to you and say, good sermon, that means they don't know what else to say and it was not good. Or they weren't really listening and they fell asleep and they're like, uh… Right. They should be so convicted that they close their eyes and put their head between their legs and barely make it out the door. They're like, I am awful. You are awful. You were the one that called me out. Is that like a generation thing, though? Because I would never do that. What? Like, why would I go up to the pastor and be like, good sermon, if it wasn't, I would not, why would you say that? Did you ever go to that, I suppose you've been with your dad most of your life, but like, did you ever go to that church where the pastor stands at the back and like shakes everybody's hand on the way out? I say, hi. My grandpa did that. That's all, if it wasn't good, I don't say it. That was his church and I always got in the very back because my grandpa knew me and I
thought I'll be the last one. And I'd say, good job, grandpa. And he'd go, eh, and then it'd be over. But he would stand right in the back and shake everybody's hand, good to meet you, good to meet you, good to meet you, good to meet you, you know, so everyone would have to go through this line. Like when you go to weddings and they try to excuse everybody by table or by row, that's really annoying. You know, if you're planning on getting married or it's coming in your new future, just let people get up and leave if they want to. No one wants to be held captive at your special event. When can I go? Right. And here's the amazing part is what person respects the authority of the usher? You know what I'm saying? This guy is a self. It's like appointed by the bride. He has no jurisdiction here. He's my third cousin twice removed. They chose that. And they usually choose like the lamest guy. Like the guy who has nothing else going on, right? Because he's all the important people are dancing with people. What are we going to do with Cousin Steve?
I don't know. Don't let him near the knives. He could be an usher, I guess, you know. And then all of a sudden he's king of the people. Yeah. Oh, sweetheart, can you go help dismiss the tables? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Your role may leave now. Whatever, Steve. I'll go wherever I want to go. You don't rule me. Those lobster tails are getting warm. I'm getting up right now. Yeah, that's killer. It just amazes me. You go to these weddings and people do whatever the usher says. Like all of a sudden they have some kind of sworn oath inside the church setting that you have to listen to them, you know. That's terrible. You're listening to Live from the Path. We are broadcasting every Monday night from 10 to midnight on livefromthepath.org. You can also catch us this Sunday on Praise 940 for our one-hour broadcast show. That will be from 4 to 5 o'clock on AM 940 here in Des Moines. Next week, we've got a pretty exciting show. We're branching out.
We're branching out. We've had a couple of country-sounding folks in here over the last few weeks. Next week, a hip-hop artist, Echo, will be in. You can catch him also on Pulse 99.5, Spinning Tunes. But he'll be in here next week sharing his music with us. I'm excited to hear from him. Next week, we will be minus Dan. Dan will be touring the world. Yeah, it's probably very important. Seeing the sights. I can't imagine what kind of shirt he's going to come back with from Washington, D.C. It's going to be wild. So that's what's going on next week. He's going to come back with a shirt that says, I'm begging for Reagan. It's going to be classic. If I can find it. What was it? The exotic what? The exotic attraction. The exotic attraction. How do you get that? Democracy. The exotic attraction, I do remember. It's rare around these parts.
Political humor. We're back in it. I just thought of the where's the gold standard bumper sticker that he's going to come back with. All right, so you're listening to Live from the Path. Let's keep rolling. Ashton, tell me, this is kind of a weird question. If I say, where do you see yourself in five years with your music? Most people say, I'm doing really well. But ideally, if you were going to do music for a living, what kind of venue or what kind of setup or scenario would you imagine yourself playing every night where you feel like it would be the most fulfilling? Would you like intimate venues? Would you like kind of the bigger, like a huge auditorium, a baseball stadium? What would be the ideal venue for you if you're doing this for a living? What does that look like for you? I don't know. Right now, I think, like we had talked about earlier, just kind of going one step at a time and just seeing wherever God leads in, if it's meant to be on a bigger scale, it will. And if it's not, then it won't. I'm happy with that and my wife's happy with that. But I kind of tend to think the more intimate thing is a little better. I like to be able to talk with people and get their input and be able to, you know, have that one-on-one and be able to, you know, not have to, I guess, have like 50 security guards and not be able to get a cheeseburger or one or whatever. Yeah, yeah. That's, you know, or being stalked. That's pretty not cool. Actually, at that point, you're going to regret that exotic attraction shirt. I knew this was going to go poorly, but a dollar a shirt.
I want the exotic attraction, but I will pay for it. That's what you're on. What is the one celebrity that if you think you could meet them, that you and them would be good buds? Definitely. If you could just cross paths at some point, you're definitely friends. Dead or alive, doesn't matter. Well, if you're friends with a dead guy, I'd say you're creepy. You can do what you want here. That's up to you. I'm just saying. Well, I mean, you know, if he's dead, then, you know. He'd be as he'd get along with. Exactly. You'd always do what you want to do. What do you think, Elvis? You'd be the better spelling of the group. Yeah, that's what I was going to say. Yeah, Elvis. If I'd have been alive in the area, I'd think Elvis. But I think probably someone now, if I can meet those famous, I'd probably say someone like Jim Carrey or Adam Sandler. I think I'd get along really good with them. Sure. Because they, or Will Ferrell. Yeah.
Yeah, definitely. He's pretty funny. You know, of course, unless I was to meet them and they were, like, you know, annoyingly funny. Right. But, you know, but something like that, you know, I think Jim Carrey seems pretty down to earth, easy to get along with. Yeah, he seems pretty. Do you think he could be tomorrow wrestling? I could. What good question is that? I know you didn't ask me, but I certainly could. I guess so. What celebrity would you think he could get along with? He can't focus is the problem. Just widely. Yeah. I could get him. I could distract him. He's a little wiry. Alive or dead? He's alive. Got to be alive. Alive. All right. Sorry, I'm a big guy.
You got to bring it up. Who are we going to get along with? Are we all going to be asked this question? Yeah, get ready. You bet. No. If I were to get along with someone that was famous, it would probably be Miley Cyrus. No, I'm kidding. No, no, no. Justin Bieber? Justin Bieber. I'm a believer. I can't help it. Bieber, Bieber, Bieber. I'm going to take that microphone away from me. You have ten seconds. I'd probably get along pretty well with… They have to like you back. Not just who you like. They have to like me. They have to think you're all right. I'm hopeless. No, I agree with the Jim Carrey. I'm a huge fan of Jim Carrey.
He don't like who he said. You better pick somebody else. He doesn't like… Okay, if Jim Carrey didn't like me then, possibly, probably, John Starrett. Okay. Did he say John Stamos? Yes. From Full Health, John Stamos. Yes, John Stamos. And I'm talking in the full steel drum from the Beatles video or the Beach Boys video. Yeah, that John Stamos. I'm not following him. You guys don't know what I'm talking about? I don't talk tables. No, I'm talking about the steel drum from the Beach Boys video. Yeah, yeah, I got it. Whatever. Sounds cool. Now that I have the mic, just to let you know, by calling it the Facebook, you sound old. It's just Facebook. This is why Jim Carrey does not like you. They officially dropped to get up. Because of the way you act right here. Yeah.
Check the website. It just says Facebook. It's not the Facebook. Is it still the Twitter? No, it's always on Twitter. You sound like you're 85 talking about that Pac-Man stuff. I play me Pac-Dash, man. One of them televisions. I know better, but I really do like saying the Twitter. It makes it sound like you're going to use the restroom. That's the way they talk in North Carolina. That's not even funny, dude. Yeah. My sister's listening to this program right now in North Carolina. She's probably going, what? Why? Why are they? Why? What's the most funny about the Twitter? Why is that one man so angry all the time? Yeah. I'm the angry guy. Ben? Celebrity.
Who would be your buddy? Dave Coulier. He's also from Full House. Oh, sorry. I got distracted. I think I would get along with… You know, he seems like a tough guy, but I think me and Russell Crowe would get along. Think so? I think he would see a lot to envy in me. What? I don't know if you two have as much in common as you think. He probably hires people like you to bench press. Here's how it would go down. Here's what would happen. We would be led into a room, and my people would get out of the way, and he would come in. And he would make his way in, and he'd extend his arm, and I'd grab his arm and put my other arm kind of a, you know, give him the two-handed shake. And I'd look at him, and I'd say, Russ, you're a phony. And he would weep. He would break down weeping. And he said, Ben Foost, Mr. Ben Foost, you've got me. And I knew you'd have me when I saw you when I walked in. You complete me. And then I would have to have him escorted out, because he's creeping me out. But that's how it would go down, and he would be a changed man for it.
And I would feel good about that. As you should. That's a completely believable story. The Lord will use me how he wants to use me. And he's going to change Russell Crowe into a man that he was not before. Because Jesus can do that. Jesus can do that. There it is. See, I can't imagine you having an entourage of people for some reason. I'd be in on that. And also, I'd probably be your bouncer. That's what I'm saying. Let me tell you this. If I said, hey, man, Russell Crowe's going to come to meet me. I need some guys to act as my people. Wouldn't you come? I'd probably be your bouncer. Pants would be there. Mike would be there. Joe Conner would show up. We would look like a ridiculous entourage. Dan would be there. Of course. They spelled Dan a mile away.
Who's that guy? Who's with that shirt? I'm sorry. I had to. I've never done one before. Leave me alone. I'm sorry. Anyway, and second off, I can't imagine Russell Crowe walking into a room, seeing you, and then, like, man, Mr. Ben Foost, I am a phony. That's excellent. Dan? Dan, I love that shirt. I even Googled movie stars. I'm thinking, I don't care. I just don't care. They don't impress me. I thought he'd say Rock Hudson just because he had to say my name. Who do you idolize? I'm saying, like, who could be your friend? I mean, honestly, I idolize them so little, I purposely don't even know their names. You can't even be friends with any of them? How are you supposed to outreach for Jesus? We run in different circles. That's a good one.
That's a terrible example. Yeah, maybe we should just all go to church and shut the door. I hang out at Walmart, Matthew, Prostitute, Sinners. We run in different circles. I'm going to go elsewhere. Excuse me. I'm Dan Hudson. Do you know who I am? The church door is locked. No one can come in. Kirk Ferris. The basketball coach. He'd be football. It's football. I don't know sports. No, I see how they work. I really can't even think of a single coach. Dan Rather? Bill Riley. From the Fox News? Yeah. You think you and him would be buddies? We could probably be buddies. He would like you and you would like him.
Hands holding, Bill does the whole show back. This guy's a lightweight. Well, I didn't tell the right story. I brought Russell Crowe to his knees. We didn't really connect emotionally or anything. Yeah. Yeah. Troy kind of succubused himself onto other people. You waylaid people. And Dan is just trying to be anywhere near Bill O'Reilly just so they could speak. That sounds about right. Are you saying that I'm just a random guy that might be in the close vicinity of a star and think that I'm friends with the guy? Yeah. Yeah. You're Facebook buddies and you're like, me and Jim are tight. We couldn't even be, I liked his fan page would be the situation. Did you do that? Well, with who? You bashed my first one and then I had to maybe go to a second one. Did you do either one of them? That's why they won't be your friends. I'm pretty sure I like Jim Carrey's page. Okay, good.
But I guess he doesn't like me, so it didn't work out. Okay. It's a free will society. Danielle? Did you think of one? Okay. Well, now I can't decide. Is it Reba? I choose Danny Glover. Danny Glover. Danny Glover. That's all right. She's right up. Okay, for girls, it would probably be like Sandra Bullock or Reese Witherspoon. I think, you think you would get along with Reese Witherspoon? Witherspoon? Sorry. She's known for being very friendly. Yeah, nice. I don't know if that's true or not. I just said that. In case Reese is watching, I want her to be. I think she's catty if there's candy available. Well, I can be catty if I have to be.
Well, those are people that don't get along, two catty ladies. But she's really nice, normally. Okay, okay, okay, all right, all right, got it. Okay, or for guys, it'd be like someone funny. Like, I thought of like Ed Holmes, Jason Bateman, Steve Carell, Kevin James. I don't know any of those people. All right. I know Carell. Have you watched The Office or like Arrested Development? Have you ever heard of them? I've seen The Office. Okay. Is it Jim? Ed Holmes is on The Hangover. Who's Jim? Jim. What's his name? Oh. Your sister joined. She said she doesn't do the Twitter. Thanks for joining, Shelly. That was nice. Good job, Shelly. We're going to get on the show.
I would be buddies with Jim Krasinski. That's not even a guy. John Krasinski. I know. John Goodman? No, not John Goodman. Although, me and John Goodman could be friends, too. I like John Goodman. Okay. Dancing for John Goodman. We need John Goodman on the show. Have you seen the shirts that John Goodman wears? There you're in, Dan. That's you. You're John Goodman. No, I'm saying Belushi. Belushi? Jim or John? They're all the same. I don't know. Chat, anybody? Chat, can you guys answer the question? So the question is, who's a celebrity that you're sure that if you met, you guys would hit it off? Not just that you like them, but they would also like you.
Think on that and throw them out there. We'll see what you come up with. How about you re-answer? Because you just broke down Russell Crowe. You didn't become friends with the guy. All right, all right. Who would I get along with? I'd say Luke Wilson. I think I would get along with Luke Wilson. Who is that? He was in… Dick Van Dyke? He's like, he's near death, Joel Kahn. He's got to be 95. He's chilling for the Medicare. The new Medicare plan. He was on the TV. It's not like Dick Van Dyke was really pushing the health care thing. I was like, oh, come on. Just stay back in your little Hollywood place. Yeah, the church doors are shut. We can't hear you, Dick Van Dyke. What I'm talking about? We're going to tell him Jesus.
When you say we're going to hang out, it's like we obviously don't think I like him. So now you're refusing to tell him about Jesus? No, I'm just saying we're not going to hang out. He wouldn't like me. He's a phony. I like everybody. I don't care, but he wouldn't like me. Just like Russell Crowe, he's a phony. I'm still trying to figure out how Russell Crowe is a phony. What if he acts for a living? Well, then why wouldn't you go to every actor? He's the one that wanted to meet me. Oh, so he wanted to meet you. It wasn't you wanting to meet him. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, you're just sitting here. Yeah. That's just common sense knowledge, and I should have known that, and I'm an idiot because I didn't. All right. So, Mr. Powers, I'm going to have to ask. There's her tell on the chat about someone scaring the holy crap out of you when you were growing up.
I would like to have more information on it. What's happened? At what state was that happening in? Yes. Which time? Put them together. Tell me the best one. The best five. What do you got? Make one scary story. The best one, and probably the one that the person in the chat is referring to, I stayed up late. I don't remember how it was. I don't remember how it was. I was like a teenager. But I stayed up late watching a bunch of horror movies because I thought it would be fun to have a Michael Myers complete all-night horror fest. So, I got all the Halloween movies that I could rent at our little video place, and I stayed up, and I watched them all, and I fell asleep, and I woke up, and there was like an evil clown covering over me. The problem was that the clown looked like the clown from It, Stephen King's It. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It didn't even look like Michael Myers, but because I was half asleep, all I knew was there was like a masked person there, and my sister was obviously wearing the mask, and I stopped
breathing, and then she was like, it's me, it's me. Well, of course, it's you, it's you. That's why I'm not breathing, because I still wasn't awake, and she's like, it's me, it's me, and she hadn't pulled the mask off at the time. It's me, scary clown. I'm here to kill you. Don't worry. That made it a little worse. That's when she said I started burying my head down into the couch, and I was like, trying to like, fall into the couch to get away from her. Yeah, when your attacker tries to be friends with you, and it puts you at ease, that's creepy. That's not right. Yes. Yeah, you don't look at someone with a mask on and say, it's me, it's me. I can't think of the time that I've been super, super scared. I used to think that I was suave with a weapon. Like, I thought I heard someone breaking into our house once, and I grabbed a guitar and went rolling down the stairs with it, and I thought, I have a guitar, and I'm in my underwear. There's nothing I can do here. There's no way to get out of this without embarrassing myself. I tell you, I don't know. You don't ever want to pull a Garth Brooks. You don't ever want to, don't smash the guitar.
No. These are not good ideas. It's the same reason it's a bad idea to sleep in your undies. In case there's a fire, you'll end up in your front yard, standing in your underwear, looking at your murder house. Yeah, that's what people are worried about. There's a big fire going on in your house, and they're sitting there chuckling, look at that guy in his skimmies. That poor sap. I'm just saying you can't be effective. Now, a man with pants on, he means business. He can grab the dog, the TV, a photo album, and a coffee pot on his way out. A guy with undies, he don't have much. He's trolling fast. He's grabbed a magazine. Yeah. Mr. Fust, I see you got a lot of your household objects out before the fire consumed them. What was the difference? Pants. Definitely. Yeah, yeah. Let me ask you. Can you be just as effective in sweatpants versus jeans? No.
No. No. Sweatpants are for women and children. Don't not sweatpants. Ask my wife, my sexy sweats. I'm pretty sure she doesn't actually like them. That's probably a joke, but they are so comfortable. It's jeans or leather. Those are the only things a man can wear. Jeans or leather. I'm all leather underpants. Gross. Yeah. I'm staying away from your house if there's a fire. Don't call me. Did Dan get out? I think so. I hear him coming. He's in the backyard, I think. Oh, that's so gross down right now. Hoping I'll be in Kentucky then. Just stick with the jeans. Jeans. You're listening to Life in the Path.
I'm just saying jeans. Don't sweatpants. Sorry. I'm sorry. Is pleather flammable? Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. All right. We'll look at the good stuff. You're listening to Life in the Path on lifeinthepath.org. Special guest Ashton Powers is in the studio with us. For more information about him, you can catch him on ReverbNation.com, backslash Ashton Powers. You can see where he's going to be. You can check song clips from him. And we'll also have clips of his performances this week on our YouTube channel. Check out the YouTube channel. We're darn near 50,000 hits through no effort of our own. Our commentary generally gets 50 or 60 people, most of which is me, just checking it out, see if anybody else has looked at it. Oh, this is a good spot here. This is when I really turned the corner. We've had some fantastic artists in here, and they're doing really well. So I would encourage you to go check them out on our YouTube channel. And then follow up.
Go to their website. Follow them on Facebook. If they've got music to buy, buy it for them. Support those folks. They're out there working hard. For Jesus, and we can be supportive of those. I don't think her album's out. I think it got postponed. It got postponed. I've been waiting for a personal phone call to explain what happened, but it hasn't happened yet. She's probably been busy. Michael, this is Jess. I really need to get a hold of you to tell you what's going on. I'm busy. Hold on. The Center of Fire. Okay, so these guys, they're out on the road. God bless them. They're in that green swearing band. The Hulk. Yeah, and it is really giving them fits. It's giving them fits. It's breaking down on them. They had to cancel the show because it's giving them fits.
So if you can help out them at all, if you go to, they have a PayPal, if you go to Life on the Path Facebook page, I kind of forwarded something that they had posted, and you can help contribute to what they've got going on out of PayPal, not only the money for the van, but because they missed the show. They were out kind of that income. They're trying to send money home to keep families up and going. So if you can support them at all, please do so. I think if you give them $30, you get a free copy of the EP that they've got coming out towards the end of the summer. I'm excited to hear that anyway. You get a front-line copy, plus you get to help them out. So I'd encourage you to do that. They can use your help, and they can use your support. Kevin Lindgren, you can catch him. He was here last week? A couple weeks ago. Last week. Last week. Two weeks. Kevin was in studio. You can catch him. He's at the Greenwood Lounge often, and he's got something coming up at, oh, where was it? It's downtown next to the Java Joes.
The Vaudeville Muse. The Vaudeville Muse. He's got something coming up at the Vaudeville Muse. Check him out. He's also on Reverb Nation, and you can find him on Facebook. And we've got a ton of other stuff going on. We're coming up on the Spirit Midwest Festival. That's in the beginning of August. A lot of the bands that you've seen on here, Certainty Saved on Sunday, just a lot of those folks are going to be at the Spirit Midwest Festival. Make sure you clear your calendar. Get up to that. That's going to be a good time. We're still planning on broadcasting from there. It could be a real debacle, but we're going to do it. Just like everything else, head first, eyes closed. Yep. Do it. We're heading in. So let's get back to some more tunes. Ashton, tell me a little bit about playing out Backwoods Country. It's another pretty self-explanatory. It's pretty much about being a country boy, or I guess a country girl if you're a girl listening to it, but it probably wouldn't really make sense.
It's like a unisex song. Anybody can have it. Yeah. Anybody can be playing out Backwoods Country. Yeah. All right. This is Ashton Powers on Live from the Path. That was Ashton Powers. You're listening to Live from the Path. We're going to take a quick break. Please enjoy the following. From the REMAX Studios in downtown Des Moines, it's 6 a.m., and you are live from the Path. That's a lot of pressure. It makes me probably the old guy in the room. I'm sorry. I got three chauvinists looking at me saying, what are you doing in the kitchen, Mary? What do you want? I don't go to a movie with whoopie in it. I mean, I'm a maggot. Bacon, I think. And cheese. You can buy this mouse for $19.95, and here's a little Jesus. Is it terrible? Because I like to put my favorite things on my boxers.
So, hey, you guys. Where is American Samoa? I don't have much of a back hair problem, but, I mean, if I did, I wouldn't want to have to ask my lady to take care of me. And it says I'm overly acidic. You seem to both have possum-type characteristics that I'm all-knowing. Can we say butt? That's why I go speedo. Very nice. Very nice. The origami undies. You're way too intellectually invested in your underwear. I wore a hole in my pants. Right. I mean, my boxies were shown when I left at four in the morning. Your grandma's friend is really Benverine. It's like holding a very warm, dead fish. Oh, this will save me time later. I'm going to have to re-watch the show. It's a long delay. You know cars can't function on wall peanut butter. It's very adult, Daniel. We tried to pick him up, but he stopped to pee in the bushes, and we couldn't wait. You spent your holiday season hawking pagan Christmas wares? I'm not in a chicken.
Just saying branch out a little bit, that's all I'm saying. What? This is going to be the most uninteresting three minutes of radio I've ever heard. Men do not smoke Virginia slums. Are those those blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. There you go. I'm so sad. Do lies jump from one head to another? You can't convince your mind to allow yourself to pee your own pants like it's out. Chicken, chicken, chicken. Oh, some Keith, oh, some chicken, chicken, chicken, chicken. I got this cat skeleton to me. I'm full. I'm hungry. I think I'll have that again. You're listening to Life from the Past. Well, my observation in life is the whiniest people on earth tend to be Christians. Okay, first of all, you're not funny. So don't even worry about it. No, I thought it was great. I don't need your approval, Daniel. Slowjack. Hey, slowjack. Look at that slowjack.
Find me a slowjack. Come on, man. In either case, I'm growing my mustache in here until the world understands me for who I am. Not just a cool guy in a sauna, but a well-educated man who gets all his information from live from the past. There is a half-naked bust mannequin woman in the church office. He's afraid to be a stealer. Along with a plastic BB handgun. And I say, what goes on in here? It's like that time you claimed that you created the peanut butter that rolls up like a deodorant. I've said too much. Titan burns me. Where's them shady internet characters? That's what I want. Giving my kid a pucker on the head. I've always been just freaky. Looks like the back alley, you know, used donkey dealer. Left my underwear outside in the rain. What's next? A bag full of aphids that eat your face? Christians don't have gas. That's the deal. Do not ever buy deodorant at an airport. Next time I find a naked dude out rolling around in my rock garden, I'm going to come look up for you and say, you caused this. What's I've got to do with it?
Big sir, the best waterbeds, that's for sure. Big sir. Waterbeds. Funk kind of did that on that smelly politician question. Yeah, that's true. I've worn a dress. Oh yeah. I fell asleep at the wheel. We had like a gang of feral cats. What's a doobie? Hey, you know what? You're fat. Donkey rib cage, 30 bucks. Where'd you get that? There it's coming. Oh. Okay. Anyway, you're listening to Silk Sheets and Rainbows. My name's Ben. I call it the street Jesus. Now hold on, hold on. I'm not past here. Cassie, I'm sorry. You don't like any sandwiches?
I've ever written to Abby and said, Mike and Ben, they make fun of my shirt every single week. They say I look like a couch. What should I do? Hey Ben, the van's going to stink. I could have said it was Big Jacker if I'd have known him face to face if he was my father. This has been Life in the Path. Daniel, what did I tell you about that? We'll see you. Go have a party. Next week. Have a wonderful week. It's jazzy. I'm trying to put a little culture in here. It sounds like rain. This song is way off of the floor. It's funky. It's like. That's more like a chicken thing. Damn. I would go for it. You see that move that they do where like one cruise. I speak Portuguese. Hey, hey, no. Ding, ding, ding, waddle.
What? Disaster. Dan started it. All right, ready? One. From his hiding place, Jack is breathing heavy. Jack is hiding. That head thing was classic. And Jack rushed out and grabbed the hen. That's realistic. And then Jack took a grab. Live from the Path. My name is Ben Foost. Why are you so mad, Ben? He's angry. My name is Daniel. I'm Mike Foost. Welcome to Live from the Path. Everyone should know me. Why don't we get to say our names? Because I have to. Because I come in. I'm the guy that has to come up with the clever stuff like. Welcome to Live from the Path.
Or go to our website. Oh, okay. And I scratch my belly. It's harder than it's deep. He'll pass it over for me to do it. And I'll scratch my belly and I won't know what to do. I often just stare at the window. That's not what that window's for. It's for looking through. Not looking at. Dan has been styling his eyelashes in the window over the break. All right, you've been listening to Live from the Path. We are still in studio with Ashton Powers. Ashton, thanks so much for being here. I really appreciate it. Thank you for having me. He drove a considerable distance at high gas prices. He ate eight Slim Jims on the way in to keep himself awake and rolling. That's too many. Seven and a half. Seven and a half. That's acceptable. True story? That's seven.
Actually, I actually got a thing of everlasting gobstoppers. True story. Seven to a Slim Jim. Oh, yeah. He did. Oh. Yeah, he did. Yeah. He did. He's dead. He's dead? Macho Man Randy Savage. He has died. He passed on. Car wrecked man? Yeah, car wrecked man. Yeah. Yeah. All right. Anyway, so welcome back. Like we talked about before, you can go to livefromthepath.org. You can catch archives of the show, including this show. We'll have this posted within the next 24, 48 hours so that you can share it with all your friends. You can see the entire thing.
Or you can skip to the good parts because we'll post clips of Ashton singing on the YouTube channel. So if you want to skip the scaf and listen to the good, solid stuff, you'll be able to check it out on YouTube. Scaf? Yeah. You just go, definitely. Yeah. Absolutely. There's no reason to call him to the carpet. He'll look it up on his own dictionary.com, and then he'll have his own definition in there, and you can't wait. Scaf. Everything but Ashton Powers. That's how it's defined. Another T-shirt. I want that one, too. Day three. You the scaf. That's what it always should say. With a finger. That way you can point at whoever you want to. I know where you've been. Sometimes he grates at me, you know? I don't know. Some days. You the scaf.
I think he's the best, and some days I think, what a mistake. You the scaf. That's the scaf thing. That's one of the days. Yeah, yeah. And what say you? Disaster. Anyway. All right. So, welcome back. You, unbeknownst to yourself, unless you read the chat and are otherwise prepared to listen to me earlier, have just walked into the Internet's fastest growing game show, Deuteronomy Dan. Mike, do something. Deuteronomy Dan! It's the scaf. Okay, you go ahead. You start. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy. Were we doing a chord action? Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy. With your host, Dan Hudson. Soul train.
It was Toot, Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy. That was a Tooteronomy. Okay, well, all right, we'll work on it. We'll work on it. I'm the exotic adventure. All right. Okay, here we go. You can't look. We're off the coast here. Okay, so the premise of the game show is, Dan will read you a law. You have to try to tell us whether that is from Deuteronomy or whether Dan simply made it up. Exactly. Is it an Old Testament edict or something Dan has just written down? Now, I noticed toward the end of what I was doing here that we could call this the Food Network Edition. However, there's a few that aren't concerning food. But, you know, there's some food items in here that are in the law or not. I'm well prepared, no matter the situation. Deuteronomy is fresh in my mind. All right, here we go. Number one. All flying insects that swarm are unclean to you. Do not eat them. Flying insects are dirty.
Deuteronomy or Dan? Would you eat a moth, Mike? There was a moth in my car today. I considered eating him because I couldn't figure out any other way to get him out. Are you Jewish? Sometimes. Not today. Deuteronomy. Do not eat the bugs, so saith the Lord. Deuteronomy. Troy. Dan. Ashton? He said eat. Dan. Dan. He said eat the bug. I said do not eat them. Dan. I'm going Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy 14. Come on. Hell. So saith the Lord.
I'm sorry, Troy. Pharaoh would like you in his entourage. I'm already failing because the last time we did this, all I did was disagree with Mike. And I got like 95% of the questions right. I kid you not. That's generally pretty safe. That's all I'm going to say. I just went with the exact opposite of what Mike was saying and I kept getting them all right. I'm heavy into the Old Testament now, brother. I read it all the time. That's all I know. Switching it? Agreeing with Mike every time. Here we go. Moving on. I think there's some good songs in the Old Testament. All right? Here we go. Do not eat the organs of any animal, clean or unclean. Mike, go ahead. Dan. Definitely Dan. Dan.
Ashton. What are you going to be, Ashton? Are you against you or with you? I'm the benchmark. Here's the thing. I will laugh viciously if you go against me. I will laugh equally viciously if you're with me. I'm going to be different and say Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy for Ashton. Danielle. I'm going to go with Dan. Danielle goes with Dan. Ben. Do not eat the organs. Do not eat the organs. Yeah, I'm going to go with. Of any animal. I'm going with Dan. Dan. Dan Hudson for the answer. It's Dan. It's Dan. I didn't cloud that one very well. I was.
I should have whipped with you. Ashton. It's a brave move. So sayeth Dan. Dan Hudson. So sayeth Dan. Yeah. Okay. When it's Dan, Mike, you say, so sayeth the Dan. No, I'll do that. I'm better at it. Can you say, so let it be. I'm one of those vanity voices that really shine. You should say, so let it be written, so let it be Dan. I'll mix it too. Go ahead next. All right. All right. Number three. Do not eat anything you find already dead. Oh. Dan. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy.
Deuteronomy. You're supposed to give it to the sojourner, right? I say Deuteronomy. Others can eat it. Yeah, that's the rest of the verse. You may give it to an alien living among your towns. He may eat it. Or you can sell it to a foreigner. But you are holy people to the Lord. Yeah. Wait a minute. I guessed Dan because you didn't include the rest of the verse. I didn't say it. I just. It was still in Deuteronomy. It was a little tricky, wasn't it? It was still in Deuteronomy. That one I just knew. That one I actually didn't know. That's Deuteronomy. So saith the Lord. So saith the Lord. Dan Hudson, number four? Number four.
There we go. Do not cook a young goat in its mother's milk. That's in Exodus. I've recently read Exodus. It's in there as well. I'm saying Deuteronomy slash Exodus. Dance with it. Go ahead, Troy. Your failings are waiting. Deuteronomy. Ashton, I've made a solid argument for Deuteronomy and Exodus. Go ahead. If you say Dan, I'll go Dan. I say Dan. I say Dan. Two-man Dan, Ben. That's Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy 14. Yes. 21. This is your fault. It was the milk part. I was like, that didn't sound legitimate to me. Oily Goats Live, you're all right with?
It's just the medium that you didn't like the milk? I didn't like the milk part. I understand. Thus saith the Lord. Next. All right. Number five. At the end of every 12 years, you must cancel debts. Falsify Deuteronomy, a.k.a. Dan. Yeah, that one I'll go Dan on. Don't do this again, Ashton. Stick with the winning team. I'm going Dan. It's Dan. I am too. Thus saith the Dan. What's falsified about this? I said it should be seven years, isn't it? You are correct. So let it be written. It is Dan. So let it be Dan. It should be seven. Mike knows all these because he just read Deuteronomy on the way in.
That's not fair. I know. A man who reads the Bible. What a disappointment. So weird that he chose this one. He piled down 40 chapters of Deuteronomy on the way in? I eat it like honey oils. It's been on the audio. All right. Number six. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead. Do not cut yourselves or shave the front of your heads for the dead. Which chapter though? Which chapter? That's not Dan language. That was tricky. That was tricky. That language belongs to the Lord. Deuteronomy. Do not cut yourselves. Dan don't talk like that. Troy. Spank and hammer. What you got?
What? Don't delay. Deuteronomy again. Just for the sake of not anyone saying you keep going, Mike, but Deuteronomy. Ashton. Well, I know it says you can't cut your hair. You can't come across any dead body. So I'm not sure if that's worded. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy for Ashton. I'm going to Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy for Danielle. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy. It's Deuteronomy. Unclever Dan produces Deuteronomy. Thus saith the Lord. I don't think I can read this one. I vote Dan. Dan. Do not grab the green one-up mushroom in Mario Brothers. Deuteronomy or Dan. This one sounds a little bit like a proverb. Do not flap your arms like a madman in the temple courts.
Deuteronomy. I am the Lord your God. That's what it says. I was running out of time. I'm going to go with Dan. Ashton. Flap arms like madman. Temple courts. Deuteronomy. Or Dan. It's not Deuteronomy. So. It's for you. Ben. I vote Dan. Deuteronomy 17. Deuteronomy 17. It's Dan. It's Dan. Okay. Do not lie to fellow radio co-hosts. There was no temple yet. The saint of the Lord. What say you?
All right. Okay. Number eight. A woman must not wear men's clothing. Nor a man wear women's clothing. Mr. Bees would disagree with you, but I'm saying Dan. Hey, Mr. Bedowers does not sell, uh… He does not sell… Men's and women's clothing. Not to be interchanged. Indeed he does. No. They do an ID check. No, they do not. I don't even know what you're talking about. Yeah, I have no clue what you're talking about. Sometimes. Yeah. Non-fashion… Like, do ladies wear suspenders, but not for, like, non-fashionable, but to keep their pants up? Because dudes… I've seen dudes who legitimately are wearing it in place of a belt, but I can't say that I've seen a woman wear suspenders in place of a belt.
You ever wear suspenders? I haven't done it, no. I did, like, once. There was some… It must have been some costume or something. It was just really weird. Isn't it? It's kind of weird. Do you just wear overalls? Try to put it. I used to have overalls. I do like overalls. Back with my, uh, patches. Ashton, overalls, yeah. In my day, yeah. There's been a time and a place? Yeah, when I was, like, when I wore my Oshkosh Vigosh. Now, see? Oh, there we go. A manly man stands outside with his house on fire in overalls. He's a man that can get things done. I don't know if I was a manly man. I was, like, maybe a toddler. Yeah.
Oshkosh. You're never more manly than when you're a toddler. That's the truth of it. Listen, truth is… You make a purple-striped Oshkosh pants. It's true. As a toddler, you know, you've got poop in your diaper, you're dirty, and you don't care, and you're just like… Yeah, you tell others to do it, pick it up. You say… Pick it up. I'm hungry. I mess myself. Let's eat, yeah. Tell others to clean. Yeah, I'm going to bed. Actually, here's the deal. I can't wear… I don't wear overalls, and I'm not very good at, like, Carhartt big overalls, either, because you feel like you're dry-heaving to get them on, because you've got your… You've got the things that clip behind them, and you've got to… You're not doing them right. You've got to grab them. If you wore them more than once a year, you wouldn't have to act like such a doofus.
Put them off. Ha! I don't know. Anyway… You're on staff. Is Ben sick? No, he's got his coveralls. Well, okay. Hold on. What was the question again? Do not flap your arm? No. No, we did that one. A woman does not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing. Yeah. Deuteronomy. That sounds like something the Lord would say. Dan. Cross-dressing. Troy says Dan. Cross-dressing. Ashton. All this stuff. We're 50-50 split so far.
I'm like wrecking my brain going, have I ever heard this? You're never going to find the direct scripture. It's in there somewhere. I say Dan. I don't have a clue. Ashton's rocking Dan. Danielle? I'm going to say Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy for Danielle. Ben Foose? Deuteronomy. Live from Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy 22.5. 22.5! The rest of the book says, for the Lord your God detests anyone who does this. The Catholic Bible has let you down again. Troy, are you reading the Catholic Bible? The free New Testament from the food pantry. What a mistake. Deuteronomy's not in it. I didn't find Deuteronomy anywhere in here. I used to be the guy that put the New Testament in the food pantry sack when my grandma was at the… I love it. That was my favorite part.
Here's this and the daily bread. Here's your daily devotional. Alright, number nine. Okay. Do not drink a mother's goat's milk. Troy is reading the way… Sorry, go ahead. Who said that? Beep. Do not drink a mother's goat's milk in the sight of a young goat. No, don't drink a mother's goat's milk. Don't… What kind of jerk? It could have been yours. It could have been for you. I stole it. Who cooks a goat in its own mother's milk? You know, if this isn't a doodle of me, it should be. There is no reason for this behavior. What the hell is, baby? Hey, little man. I bet you're hungry. Excuse me. I'll go…
I'll go… I'll see you. Do not drink a mother's goat's milk in the presence of a small goat. Dan! That sounds kind of mean. Troy, you want it in this pool? There's plenty of water. I'll go Dan. Dan. Dan, Ashton, what do you want to do here? Again, the milk thing, Dan. Dan, Dan for milk? Yeah, Dan. I'm double down on Dan. It's Dan. Dan! What kind of man thinks of something like that? Stealing goat's milk from a mom and drinking it in front of the baby. Who thinks about cooking a young goat in his mother's milk? That's in there. That's Deuteronomy. Oh, man. That's God going. Don't go ahead and fry your babies in your own milk, all right?
That's bad, dude. Oh, holy God. Okay, last one, number ten. Dan, if you see your brother's ox or sheep strain, do not ignore it. What's the rest of it? Do not ignore it. Ben. I'm voting Exodus slash Deuteronomy on this one. No, I think Exodus said… Or the bull. No, it has something to do with if you let someone borrow the ox or bull. It said the same thing, but there's one about you can't leave them wandering. You're supposed to return them. I vote Exodus. Deuteronomy by proxy. Ben says Deuteronomy, Danielle. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy for Danielle. Troy Engeldinger. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy for Troy Ashton. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy. I am saying Dan.
I'm going Deuteronomy 22. First one. I barely fell off the diving board. These were pretty weak tonight. And Mike's still lost. Ouch. I still can't get the thought of some dude like, what's up goat? Go back to your barn. Enjoy some of this. Nothing for you to see here. This is delicious. You have been listening live from the past. And you were just a part of America's fastest growing internet game show, Deuteronomy Dan. It deserves its own song. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy Dan. That's what it is. Okay, here we go. That's what it is. One, two, one, two, three. Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy.
Deuteronomy Dan. Yes. Yes. Ashton, you'll always be a part of that. You'll always be a part of that. You'll be 85, stroking your beard on your porch, playing that one. In fact, you'll probably have the Alzheimer's, and you'll be going back in life, and for some reason you'll be stuck on it, and your kids won't know what to say. They're like, what's wrong with Dad? He's always like, dude, Deuteronomy, Dan. And he keeps stealing milk from that goat over there. And drinking it in front of the baby goat. Putting him in a home is the best thing we were just doing. We can't take care of him. We can't stop seeing him. Deuteronomy Dan. Moving on. That was a good one. We tweetered him, but we don't know. Nothing comes up. It's on the tweeter. All right. CNN. Somebody else take over.

So go check that out, including tales from the past, past musical performances, and snippets from the show that you thought were unimportant, but most certainly are important. And that's why we're there. Critical. Very good. Thanks, Mike. All right. So I'm perusing the CNN belief blog today. And there's a story out there, and it was about things that people mistake for being in the Bible. So the title of the article was, actually, that's not in the Bible. Like waving your hand like a madman. Okay. So like some of these phrases we talked about, some of them were phrases like, God helps
those who help themselves, spare the rod, spoil the child, things that people cite. One of these examples they gave was that Satan was the one that tempted Eve in the garden. They said, well, the Genesis account doesn't ever mention Satan as being in the garden. Yeah, the serpent. I mean, it's just, you know, it's a given. It's a given? He's the serpent. Didn't you see the Passion of the Christ? He's obviously, he's creepily dressed, there's fog around him. He's the devil. He's a girl dressed up like Satan. Come on. So that's what you do if you say, well, welcome to the Christian faith. Here is the New Testament and a copy of the Passion of the Christ. Exactly. Stay away from the Genesis. Everything you need to know is right in here. Stay away from the Genesis account. Anyway, so they're kind of just talking about the things that people miss. But really, I mean, honestly, most of the references to Satan are kind of a clouded thing. You know, I had a blank, but the, you know, the Prince of Persia refers to Satan, the serpent, Satan, that kind of thing. Yeah. So anyway, it was an interesting article. It was, they talked about how people would just, frankly, don't read enough in their Bible to even recognize it.
Yeah, as a religion teacher, there's a guy that teaches a religion class, and he sometimes quotes second hesitations for three to see if anybody catches on. And it sounds like there's just two or three people that catch on to that, otherwise they miss it. Which I think is obviously a, we've got to be better. You've got to know what the Lord is saying instead of, you know, perpetuating things that the Lord is not saying. Yeah. There's an interesting part of this article that I couldn't, I thought that was pretty weird. Let's see, where is it at? A lot of concepts, God helps those who help themselves. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It's not in there. So this is under the heading, when phantom Bible passages turn dangerous. Oh, shoot. Sorry, I had this stuff, and then I had to move to tough to read it again. Might go ahead and talk to somebody. Oh, Danielle. What's up? Oh, yeah, here we go. Okay, so this says, most people have heard this one, God helps those who help themselves. It's another phantom scripture that appears nowhere in the Bible, but many people think it does. It's actually attributed to Benjamin Franklin, one of the nation's founding fathers. So here's the classic. The passage is popular in part because it's a reflection of cherished American values, individual liberty, and self-reliance, says Sidney White Crawford, a religious studies scholar at the University of Nebraska.
Yet that passage contradicts the biblical definition of goodness, defining one's worth by what one does for others, like the poor and the outcast. Is that the biblical definition of goodness? Not at all. What you do for others? No. I totally disagree with that. Yeah, I don't know. What does the Bible define goodness at all, like in general? Example, good teacher. What is Christ's response? I mean, you look at God, his character, he's described as goodness, good enough, bright as the Lord, Psalm 25, 8. I'm just kind of doing a perusing of the scripture here. The goodness of God is a bunch of goodness of God stuff. Well, I guess, so let me ask this, Mike, are you good by what you do? According to the Bible, does what you do make you good? No. Well, I see what you're saying. No. Right. Right. Right. No. No. You're not good by what you do, right?
You're saved by the grace of God alone. God alone is good. I mean, remember that was the example when the guy came up and said, you know, good teacher. And Jesus said, you know, you call me good. God alone is good. And so I thought it was pretty interesting and ironic in a story that is to purport the things that people misunderstand about the Bible. They have the religious studies teacher who says, you know, they're missing the part where it says the biblical definition of goodness is defining one's worth by what one does for others, like the poor and the outcast. Yeah. You missed it. You totally missed it. People misconstrue what the Bible is all about all the time. Like some people look at it as like some kind of self-help guide on how to make you a better person. Yeah. That is not the deal. That is not what the Bible is about. That's not what Jesus is about. You can't be a better person. You're junk. You are absolute fallen junk. You can't fix it. That's not a t-shirt, Troy. You want one? Yeah. I'm junk.
I'm junk. You are. I'm junk. We're all junk. There's nothing – you know, and one of – I was listening to a sermon this week, and they said – they were talking about freedom. And he was talking to a guy, and the guy said, I'm free. And he said, you're free, huh? He said, then go ahead and exercise your freedom and stop dying and stop sinning. If you can't do those two things, you are not free. You are not good. You can't stop yourself from doing those two things. So you're a slave just like everybody else. And so the only person who's good is God is good. And the only reason that we look like anything to God is because of what Jesus did. It's his goodness. It's Jesus' goodness covering up our badness, frankly. Yeah. And so – but people look at the Bible like, how can I make myself better? How can I be a better person? And there's attributes of God to grab onto, and there's behaviors and works that you'll see change as your faith in God grows. But it's not a one-stop instruction shop. The instruction is realize that Christ is your fallen Savior who died to put you in God's grace because that's it. Other than that, there's no other way to get there. Well, I mean, and that's the big key, right?
Like you will never fully understand the depths of God's grace until you recognize how much you need it, right? And if you don't recognize how much you need it, you don't – you know, you may not be – you don't have the full understanding of the grace, and you have trouble appreciating what it is that has been done for you. Like if you think, you know what, I see that he died, and probably for that guy who kicks his dog, but I'm pretty cool. Right. I'm all right. I'm pretty nice. I make my sandwich like the next guy. Things are all right. And, you know, I'd say, well, it sounds like he overdid it, right? Because what did I do? I didn't really do it. And that's missing it, right? That's missing it. And it stinks, but like if you don't recognize yourself as the junk, you know what I'm saying? Like you don't really understand what has been done for you, what was suffered for you, and frankly, what Jesus had to take from you and to take upon himself for you. Yeah, it seems like we had not long ago someone in here that was kind of talking Bible stuff, and I kind of got the impression of almost a I'm pretty good. You know, how do you know? They couldn't define when salvation really happened, but it was like, how do you know if you're saved even? You know, well, you're just so good. You just kind of realize it. But that's not the words you used, but it was kind of like, whoa. You know, I don't think people really honestly thought that. Well, and the most common misconception I find about people when they look at Christ is, you know, you'll ask them, and they'll tell you direct.
They say, yeah, God is powerful. Yes, God is all-knowing. Yes, Jesus died for my sins. They're all on board with that until it comes to the part where they needed that death, where they needed Jesus to cover their sins. That's where people have a stumbling block because they'll say, yes, it's an all-loving God, and yet it was terrible what Jesus had to go through. You know, but getting them to say, I needed him to die for me. I needed that to happen. Otherwise, I have no shot here. You know, that seems to be the stumbling block. People will jump headfirst into believing that Jesus died for them, but not so necessarily that they need it because as soon as you truly think on it and realize that you do need him to cover your sins because, you know, if you really knew that, then you'd change on your own. Things would start to be different. If you knew that you were honestly indebted for your entire life to someone dying on your behalf, if you truly could grasp that, then it wouldn't be work to change. You know, you'd know better, and I still struggle with that. You know, I still put Jesus aside and live my life on occasion, well, more occasions than I do it. That's part of the struggle of the flesh. Yeah, I mean, because we're not Jesus. We're not God, you know, and that's why Jesus had to die, but the realization is that he did have to do it for me because otherwise I'm just a bad person in front of God. God is not like sin, and I embody sin. I am the epitome of it, and so God hates sin. God don't like, he don't much care for me because that's what I'm covered in. All right. Anyway, I thought it was a weird article. It's kind of an ironic thing for a guy to pass through because he's looking at exactly the thing that you're talking about. The Bible is simply a book of morality, and he's completely missing where we're at, where we really are, what was really done, and what that means for those folks.
And that's kind of like me critiquing a recipe, you know, and it's like, I mean, sure, I eat, but I'm not really a baker, you know, and I don't really get the world, you know, spices and stuff. I don't even know what, you know, you should have used a different spice. I don't even know what they're called, you know, the different names. And someone who's not a believer trying to get into the Bible and write an article about the Bible, sometimes they just, they don't get it, you know. Well, it might actually be a good opportunity to realize what people who don't have an honest relationship with Christ think about the Bible, you know. Yeah. Because if you do look at it as just a judgmental book of morality, that's exactly how you'll take it, you know, and you'll give or take whatever pieces that you want to, you know, that you choose to believe in or choose to leave. True. All right, well, let's catch back up with Eshton. What other tunes you got for us? You guys got something else you can play? Yeah, we were looking through the song bag, and actually, I'm going to do Take My Hand, Precious Lord, which is, actually, I didn't write it, obviously. It's an old gospel song, and it's one of my favorite gospel songs. It's also my mother-in-law's favorite gospel song, so that'll be a good one to do. And I don't think she's able to listen tonight, because they don't think they have the internet at their place. But she'll be able to come over and see it on ours, and so she'll appreciate it. And it's actually one of my favorite gospel songs, so. Cool. So that'll be a good one to play. All right, this is Ashton Powers on Live from the Path with Take My Hand, Precious Lord. Lead me on, let me stand, I'm tired, I'm alone. Precious Lord, Precious Lord. It's one of my favorite gospel. Yeah, yeah, I do like it.
I like it. It's very, very nice. I was trying to think, when you said that, what my, if I had to pick an all-time favorite, I'm not sure, I'm not sure what I'd say it would be. That's tough, there's a lot of them. Yeah. I mean, you know, I mean. There's ones that I forget about that'll come up, and I'm like, oh, I should have picked that one. Boy, there, I don't even remember, there was some CD I had, and it was like 15 years ago, that I'm just not, I don't listen to that sound of music a lot. Like, I love it live, but I don't have a lot of CDs. I had one CD I just picked up somehow, and I would turn that thing on practically a week. I'd sit there and turn all the lights off and just listen to that thing, and I wish I can't even think of singing some of the songs right now, but some of those things just get into the heart of your, you know, your relationship with God, and so, yeah. I have to look down that. I probably still have that, so I'm sitting around somewhere. You see, you probably can't see what's going on with the chat here, Ashton, but people are saying your voice is very smooth. Very smooth. Thank you. I'd say like Sanka, but I don't know how people feel about Sanka. You know, what people don't like?
I don't know the first, I don't know I would describe Sanka as smooth. What's smooth? Maxwell House, maybe. Is that better? Sanka has bite. Maxwell House is smooth. You don't know Sanka. Maybe I don't do that. I don't know Sanka. I don't ever do Sanka, and I've never met him. Oh, man. I don't do Sanka. I don't do Sanka. No, it's the Barry White of coffees. No, it's not. I mean, it's smooth. It certainly is not. The Barry White of coffees. It's smooth. It's the Donny Osmond of coffees. It's not the Donny Osmond of coffees. Puppy love. Okay, I'm going to take, I'm going to rescind the Sanka. It's not a majority on the Sanka thing, but it's very smooth nonetheless.
The chat very much appreciates it. Yeah, yeah. It's very cool. Thank you, chat. What's, how about you for a hymn? Like, what, anything jump to mind when you think of your favorite hymn? Um, besides take my hand, precious Lord, um, there's, um, a really, I don't know if this is an old one, but I heard, uh, George Jones did this, um, gospel song and gospel album my dad had that, uh, I really liked. And it was called, I Can Live Forever, and, uh, it was absolutely one of the most beautiful songs I'd ever heard. Awesome. Awesome. I remember, I remember listening to, now it's later us, but he does the, he does the, the, uh, Glory, Glory, Hallelujah. And it's solid. It's solid with the timpanis and the craziness. And, uh, it's, it's a good one. But, well, I wish I wasn't. Yeah. Well, I wish I wasn't. Yeah, the, uh, the American Trilogy. Yeah, the American Trilogy. Oh, it's, it's very solid.
Is this it right here? Huh? Yeah, sir. Yeah, hold on. Let's see if we can do it. Oh, yeah, yeah. There, you guys can watch it. Hold on a second. There it goes. I was born early along from an outfit. That's why I take him seriously. Who is it? Who said that? I'm sorry. Are you serious? I'm sorry, Pot. Would you like to talk louder to the kettle? He's having a hard time hearing you through his rhinestones. Here's Troy's favorite part right here. Now, is this before he died? Just, just before, uh, I befriended him. It's that wild drum band. He's about ready to get into the ring. He's yelling at people.
Play letters. Steve, do the letters. Come on. This is for Jesus. Get out of those drums. This is not your wedding. You don't tell me what to do. I'm over the land. Look at me. I need to come yell, show me out. This is fun. Because I had this DVD at home, but it's more fun than him here. Ben Foose, everybody. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Ben Foose. I've got a tear. I've got a tear right now. I've got a tear. It's swelling up. You're a beautiful audience. Thank you. You're a beautiful audience.
Thank you. All right, so Bill Gaither. You like that Bill Gaither? I went and saw the Gaithers when they came to town. Seriously? Yeah. They're so good live. Who is it? Get away, Willie Dixon. Yeah, Willie Dixon. Get away, get away, Jordan. Who in this room has sung with the Gaithers? Not in the audience? No, on stage. No, me twice. No kidding. Did Bill come talk to you? I called him Billy. Do you? What does he say? He's got Bill on speed dial. Hey, Danny. We're like nickname bases. Your buddies?
Yeah. At New York? Wasn't that when you were at the Bitch McAuliffe? No, they were in West Virginia then. Oh, yeah. I won't say anything about his hair. Seriously. That you don't know. He came out for a sound check one time. He's like, I just woke up. And his hair was really like messed up. He was wearing a sweatshirt and jeans. And then he came back like 20 minutes later, talked about roast beef he had just eaten and looked much better. Don't say nothing. What? What? Obviously, it's already been put out. Troy doesn't know the Gaithers. He's never even heard of them. I don't know who the Gaithers are. Can we please? I haven't the slightest clue in any way to the Gaithers. In case we're singing.
So you've not been to any of the reunion? The homecoming reunion? On the IPTV? You will become part of the family if you go. Oh, yeah. I like the Wolfman. Sweet. The family? That's the way, woman. I have no clue. What would be an appropriate song? What's that guy? Guy Penrod. That's what I'm thinking of. The end of the beginning. End of the beginning. Is that the guy with the long hair? Yeah. That does… So who are they? He does It Is Well With My Soul. I'll tell you what. The Gaither vocal bands, It Is Well, is a weeper. Will you please?
It's a weeper. I can see if I can find it. We got… Oh, no. You know what? We're not going to have time. We got four minutes. We don't have time. Okay, can we put that on at the end? It's on… Yeah, I'll see if I can find it. I'll dig one up. I would… Anthony Berger, the piano guy? Oh, solid. So just a reminder, what's coming up next week on Life on the Path? Echo will be in. He's a hip-hop artist. We're going to hear from him. He's going to debut one of his tracks, and I'm pretty excited. Am I still beatboxing for him? I said you could run it past him. I'm pretty sure he's not going to agree to that. Well, give me an audition.
Give me a little bit of beatboxing. Get up in there. I'm going to freestyle. That's actually pretty good. Okay, go ahead. Uh-oh. That was it? That was it? Beatbox. Beat, beat, beatbox. Beat, beat, beatbox. Cut the scam. Cut, cut, scam. Cut, cut, scam. Cut, cut, scam. We don't even need a guess. Yeah. We got this at him. Danny, if you want to learn how to beatbox, just say the words boots and cats. No, I was going to freestyle, but I have to… I can't freestyle. I'm going to tell you something. We're the coolest people at the Gaither Center. Did you try?
That's the truth. You were thinking of your head. At the Gaither Club, you were the coolest people there with this kind of act. I bet the Gaithers would let us go. It works boots. Yeah, they would. Ashton, were you doing it? He was thinking in his head. I was thinking it, and I was like, boots and cats. Boots, boots, boots and cats. Boots and cats. Oh. Ashton, I don't know how to tell you this, but you're out of the band. I'm sorry. Was it boots or cats? It's tough. I thought the boots went all right, but then the cats. Boots and kitties. I'm going to have to ask you to leave. That's awesome. Hit the tweeter. Not without my t-shirt. Oh, look. We're out of time.
Ashton was going to do the boots and cats, but I'm sorry. Time is short. Time is short. Deuteronomy. I forgot already. Don't be cruel. With the over's blue. Is that it? Was that the blue song we're talking about? Yeah, that sounds very similar to that. Oh, man. Oh, shoot. I never showed you the guy. The intro to Christian guy. Oh, man. The woman has split the Gaithers name apart. It's a very non- I like the Gaithers. I'll be honest with you. Oh, have you seen them live? I can't listen to just throwing a CD of the Gaithers, but- Live, it's pretty good. It's so good. Here's the deal.
Because the Lord's good, and it's the Lord's music, and it tends to grab you. It tends to get you. Now, that's not fair. We've said that before. People who play the Lord's music aren't necessarily good musicians. No, that's true. We've talked about that. These people are phenomenal musicians and vocalists. Phenomenal. Phenomenal. I'm not kidding. Okay, so this guy that you're looking at, this is from a pamphlet that Mike found, and it was about things every new Christian should know, and this was the guy on the front. So if you've just come to the Lord, this is the guy that you'll be getting. That's right. You immediately head to the woods and reflect on yourself. That's what I look like. You're a sinner. That's what I look like when I shave my hair, and I comb my hair when it's longer. The Lord says, I want you to spend 40 days in the woods, and I want you to go boots a cat. When you become a new Christian, you should automatically travel to Wyoming, grow a mustache, and comb back your hair. Number two, skin a possum.
I believe I have pictures of me looking very similar to that. Three. Dude, my dad looked exactly like that in so many pictures I've seen. Look at the size of his eyebrows. I mean, those are huge. Let's see. And he's like, he's casually peering off into the sunset. I don't know why you're looking at the eyebrows. I'm looking at the gigantic, thick man stash. Do you see my wedding pictures on Facebook? That's my wedding. It's, yeah. We didn't even get to the tenets of Christianity. We're going to have to do it when Danny gets back from vacation. I'm pretty sure he didn't prepare. I said it to you. You see it? Did you get a Facebook message? No. I don't check my Facebook during the show. I'm on the show. I thought you could come to your phone. I didn't get a Facebook message. No one even talked to Ashton.
