Segments

  • Voice-changer gadget demo 0:00–0:08
A host demonstrates a voice-changing gadget at the top of the recording, speaking in an altered voice and noting it can make the speaker sound like James Earl Jones. Another voice chimes in with the line "This is David Crowder," suggesting further voice impressions. The hosts react with amusement before the interview begins.
  • Interview: recording the debut CD 'Why Me' 0:08–1:35
The hosts interview a musical guest about a debut CD of eight songs called 'Why Me,' expected out in March after a 90-day national release window. The guest says the music was mixed and mastered this month, Houston Green produced and played all the instruments, and the label mostly left the songs alone except trimming some long ones. The guest jokes that the producer only kept the good takes and that he expects a certain amount of creative resistance.
  • CD cover art and the first-CD photo shoot 1:36–1:52
The conversation turns to cover art for the debut CD, which the label's artists will handle. Asked whether the label will put the artist's face on the cover, the guest says no — that is apparently a big no-no for a first CD — and mentions having to do a photo shoot. The transcript cuts off mid-sentence before the thought finishes.

This is me. It's something that changes your voice to James Earl Jones when you talk. This is David Crowder. Yeah, that's very cool.

So you have some recorded music in the works then. I do. I recorded eight songs. The CD's actually called Why Me.

It's probably going to be out probably March because it takes 90 days for it to be released in the national market. So it'll actually be done probably in December. They sent my music to me tonight and I started listening to it just to do the okay because

they mixed and mastered it this month. At the beginning of each month, that's when they assign an artist to the CD. So once that's done, that's when it starts really cooking to get done. So I'm pretty excited.

So did they change up a lot of your stuff that you sent them? Like, oh, do this, move around a verse or that kind of thing? They didn't. Or they pretty much leave it?

They pretty much left it alone. Actually, I had studio musicians. Houston Green's my producer. He actually did all the instruments for the CD.

And when I got to listening to it before I went down to Oklahoma to record the vocal, it was exactly what I wanted because we had to send down a little bit of a click track with the chords and the vocals so they could get an idea of what it was. I figured they'd add a bridge here or something.

No. That's the thing. It's like I wouldn't trust people that would say my stuff is all right. You know what I'm saying?

Like I expect a certain amount of resistance. Like, listen, 75% of what you're going is pretty awesome. But some of this, I mean, it's mad. Seriously.

I can't put this on vinyl. Yeah, they changed it. They didn't really change, but they shortened some things up because some of the songs were kind of long.

So they said, you know, you really don't have that long a song. When you're doing it live, play it as long as you want. Play for hours. You know, Freebird, whatever you want to do to it.

Now, did you get to do cover art and that kind of thing for the CD? That's what they will work on, yeah. The artists for the label will work on some sort of artwork. Are they going to try to put your face on it?

No. That's a big no-no for a first CD, apparently, because I had to do a photo shoot. Yeah, and they said that if you don't have a big.
