Segments
- Show open and twin childhood stories 0:25–2:30
The show opens live from the Pathway Studios in Johnston proper. A host (who identifies himself in the audio as Ben's twin brother) tells childhood stories: their father splitting one can of Diet Pepsi between the two boys, their mother giving each twin one five-pound weight from a set for his 10th birthday, and the brothers' opposite strong arms making arm wrestling impossible. Banter about drinking from cups, cans, and bottles leads into the first show bumper.
- Tonight's lineup 2:30–3:08
The hosts preview the episode: week 15 of their ongoing rebuttal of godisimaginary.com's '50 proofs' (this week: Jesus' resurrection), a review of the new American Bible Challenge game show, a congressman's skinny-dipping incident in the Sea of Galilee, and a segment on so-called 'Bible bullies.' A joke line about being sexy 'because God does what he wants' sets the irreverent tone.
- The Sea of Galilee skinny-dipping story 3:08–4:02
The hosts lay out the news story they will debate: U.S. congressmen on a trip to Israel eat dinner beside the Sea of Galilee; waiters convince them it is customary to swim there; most wade in clothed, but one congressman strips completely and swims. The hosts note the public outrage and pose the question for later: is swimming (let alone nude) in the Sea of Galilee sacrilegious?
- Bible bullies 4:03–12:38
Mike (named in the audio as the host who 'has had it about up to here') vents about 'Bible bullies': people who respond to a Facebook prayer request not with a simple 'I'm praying' but with verses that imply the asker has lost faith — illustrated by someone replying 'Philippians 7, 8' to a post about a sick family member. The hosts debate intent versus tone (verses of hope versus verses of rebuke), swap Facebook habits (typing and abandoning replies, Dan's story about nearly posting a jab about his daughter's boyfriend), joke about 'Jabs for Idiots' zinger books and Zig Ziglar, and land that correction-style verses can wound people who only asked for prayer.
- American Bible Challenge review 12:38–17:20
The hosts review GSN's new Bible-trivia game show hosted by Jeff Foxworthy: rudimentary multiple-choice questions 'your average first grader' could answer, overlong contestant introductions, an hour runtime that should be thirty minutes, and a genuinely difficult 'women of the Bible' speed round at the end. They praise that all winnings go to the contestants' chosen charities. Side bits include a host who forgets a church acquaintance's name (guessing 'Steve'; the man is Greg) and the live chat joking that one host has 'a lady's voice.'
- Is skinny dipping in the Sea of Galilee sacrilegious? 17:22–25:35
The hosts debate the hard question: one argues the category of 'sacrilegious' itself is man-made — something is sin or it isn't — and that the congressman's real problem was foolishness, not location (Jesus was in a boat there; it is moving, recycled water). A host recounts early-church history from a 'Doctrine of Baptism' class: second- and third-century believers baptized nude in living, moving waters, often after a year of cleaning up their lives. They riff on Peter walking on water, Peter jumping naked from the boat in John 21, and a comedy routine about sleeping in jeans so you are ready if the house catches fire.
- Show promo break 25:35–26:13
Mid-show announcements: the show airs live Monday nights 10-11 p.m. Central at liveinthepath.org, full shows on YouTube, clips including musical guest performances, and the podcast feed. Ben (addressed by name) is asked how many podcast subscribers there are and answers: more than three, fewer than two thousand.
- God Is Imaginary, proof 15: the resurrection 26:13–30:01
A host reads the week's godisimaginary.com 'proof' in full. The site's argument: the resurrection is the defining proof of Jesus' divinity, proved only by his appearances to people (Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20-21, 1 Corinthians 15:3-6, with the Apostles' Creed as summary). It asks why Jesus stopped appearing and doesn't appear to everyone today — claiming the Bible's prayer promises (Matthew 7:7, John 14:4, Matthew 18) mean a prayer to materialize should work, and since it never does, Paul's account must be false, Jesus was merely human, and God is imaginary.
- Hosts respond: evidence, free will, and faith in the unseen 30:01–40:54
The hosts push back: the site's author demands 'evidence without source' and makes himself the center of the universe — if Jesus did not appear to him personally, it could not have happened — while ignoring the four Gospel accounts and the historical evidence for the resurrection. They wrestle with the deeper question (why doesn't Jesus appear to everyone?) and answer that forced belief is not love: God created humans with free will so faith is honest, not coerced. They invoke Thomas in John 20 ('Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed'), the Pharisees demanding signs, and the rich man and Lazarus: people who reject the spoken word would not be convinced by a risen man either. They close the proof with a dare: 'you should examine Jesus' resurrection.'
- A host's prayer: 'I don't want to know anymore, I want to feel more' 40:54–45:01
A host shares a humbling prayer from the drive to the studio: while rehearsing a biblically sound gospel pitch, he realized he did not believe a word coming out of his mouth — he was 'too worded up' and could 'smell the religion' coming off himself. He confesses he is on the path to becoming the very 'Bible bully' he criticized earlier: a judgmental jerk throwing Philippians quotes at sick people. He resolves to double his prayer time and seek more relationship with God and less Bible-study performance.
- Dear LFTP: the cheap boyfriend 45:01–47:39
A listener's letter: she has dated Larry for over a year; he is in and out of work and never pays — looking away when the check arrives or insisting on Dutch treat — while she works two full-time jobs. She asks if she is out of line expecting a man to treat a woman. The hosts say Larry is a jerk ('a man harlot, and not a good one') and she is not compatible with him; she should leave. They read the 'Secular's Advice' column reply, which agrees he is cheap but calls the always-treat expectation outdated — prompting jokes that she is paying for 'services rendered.'
- Dear LFTP: wallet photos of a deceased girlfriend 47:40–51:16
A listener found an old wallet holding photos of his high-school girlfriend, a close platonic friend until her untimely death years ago. Tossing them feels disrespectful, but he does not need to keep them, and his wife does not care either way — so what is the protocol? The hosts roast his indecisiveness, reject mailing the photos to her parents as awkward, and advise filing them away or digitizing them. Secular's Advice suggests offering them to her family, or boxing them up for his children to deal with after he is gone — which the hosts mock as outsourcing the decision to the next generation.
- Dear LFTP: 'You used to be fun' 51:17–57:57
A listener ('Mrs. Jagger'), married 10 years with two kids, asks how to answer her husband's repeated dig 'you used to be fun' now that parenting and full-time careers replaced their partying band days. The hosts work both angles: if she has shut down to fun, she should stay open and they should start dating again; but the deeper take is on the husband — a man who pines for his band days instead of taking his role as husband and father is avoiding responsibility, 'wanting the ability to feel important without taking the responsibility.' Verdict: he needs to grow up, she needs to lighten up, and they should find age-appropriate fun together (bowling). A comedy detour looks up the word 'covert' on freedictionary.com.
- Dear LFTP: the stolen gift-card idea 57:57–1:00:55
A listener's sister asked what she was getting their mom for her birthday, liked the e-reader gift-card idea, and mailed Mom the same gift card two days later — claiming it is no big deal. The hosts split: one side says it is flat-out rude and low-rent (she mailed it before confessing); the other says it is only a gift card, Mom gets double, and wanting credit for the idea is the real vanity ('if you want a gift that's appreciated, a gift card's not the way to go'). Running gags about terrible gift-giving and the For Dummies series close the segment.
- Outro 1:00:57–1:01:45
Closing announcements: live Monday nights 10-11 at liveinthepath.org, the YouTube channel for clips, full shows online, and a final push to subscribe to the free podcast ('no gift card from two arguing siblings needed').

Full transcript
From the Pathway Studios in Johnston Proper, you are live from the Pathway Studios. It's actually like a five-year-old boy. Drink with ice in it. Either an old person or a… My mom said I could have some. Do cups. I like cans and bottles. You know why I don't do cups, right? It's because my old man, when we used to… Me and Ben used to go to his house on the weekends. My old man would get one can of Pepsi, a diet Pepsi, and split it between Ben and I. Because as twins, we split everything. Yeah.
Happy birthday, you and another dude. And the other. Here's the thing. People glorify being a grown-up twin, right? But I remember on my 10th birthday, my mom bought two five-pound weights as a set and then gave one to Ben and one to me. And I thought, I feel like I'm getting screwed. Yeah, that's low rent. That's awesome. Yeah. So did grandparents, uncles, whatever, favor one of you over the other or were there times? No, we both got the exact same gift all the time. Because they were afraid to… Ben had one extremely strong left arm and I had one extremely strong right arm.
You know, you could have switched. And then we could never arm wrestle. And we weren't geniuses, Dan, you know? I wrote my name on it and said, that was mine. Don't touch it. You're listening to Life in the Path. Yeah, thanks for joining us tonight. I'm sexy because God does what he wants. That's not in the Bible. I don't know where to go with that. But I agree. Go to Galatians 7. It's kind of uncomfortable with the first half of the second.
So here's what we got going on tonight. All right, we're hitting into week 15 on our God is Imaginary.com. This time he wants to look at Jesus' resurrection. This ought to be tasty. Just a heads up, he thinks it's preposterous. Oh, I wouldn't doubt it. Okay, here's what else we got going on. The American Bible Challenge game show is fired up. Did you guys catch it? No. I caught it. I saw like a preview or something. I'm going to tell you about it.
All right. It's not good. It was a disappointment. I'll tell you why. Is this the one that was Jeff? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. It had total potential, but I was very disappointed. I'll tell you why. Secondly, Congressman's skinny dipping in the Sea of Galilee. Did you guys hear that story? No. So we're going to talk about this.
Where have I been? This has been a couple weeks ago. Congressman goes down like a bunch of them go on a trip to Israel. And there's these waiters that are having dinner. And it's next to the Sea of Galilee. And these waiters kind of convince him that it's traditional to go swimming in the Sea of Galilee. And so some of them go out and do it, except for this egghead who strips down to his bare nubbins and goes a diving in and swimming around in the Sea of Galilee. No doubt. So anyway, the interesting thought is because there is some question. They're like, it's sacrilege. He's been swimming in the Sea of Galilee.
I'm like, well, who says that? It may have been a poor choice, but like, I mean, he could have made the same poor choice swimming in the outdoor fountain. Did not God make all of it? Yeah. I mean, all the bodies of water. So we'll talk about it. It's weird the type of attention that this thing got for completely the wrong reason. So we're going to talk a little bit about skinny dipping in the Sea of Galilee. Also, Mike's had it about up to here with the Bible bullies. Yeah. Here's the thing, Dan. It's like I've seen people who go, they're going through some rough times.
You know, generally I see this on Facebook, but you still see it spoken word and written every once in a while, but like people will post something. They'll say, look, so-and-so or a member of my family has gone through something kind of rough. You know, we could really appreciate your prayers, right? Yeah. And then, you know, you'll get the first three people that are like praying, you know, definitely praying. Our heart's going out to you. And then here come the Bible bullies, right? They show up out of nowhere with verses from the Bible that really, they tend to speak that you have completely lost your faith and then these Bible verses are going to start backing it up, right?
Like, so they, what's one that I saw this week? I don't know. Somebody put something that one of their family members was sick or something. And then like five posts down is the guy that writes, you know, he just writes like Philippians 7, 8, you know, like, and I looked up the verse, right? And it's like, through all things, the Lord will give you strength, you know? And I thought, you know, maybe the person at the time just wants you to pray for them. You know what I'm saying? It's not like they've abandoned their faith in God or given up on everything. They've just asked you to pray for them, right? And like, as soon as these verses start piling up, I start to feel for the person that posted it like, hey, listen, man, they haven't like given up on God's ability to do anything. They just wanted you to pray.
That was it. Well, it could be. It's just an encouragement. I'm with you. I don't ever take it that way. I always take it like, will you just pray like I asked you to? I believe God is holy and will do what he wants. Can you just say, yes, I'm praying? I think it can be taken like the way that people respond, although scriptures certainly should be encouraging. It implies that you've given up on God, on what he said in the Bible, and that's why I'm going to you. I think you guys are negative Nancy.
No, Dan. You're negative Nancy. Uh-uh. Someone throws a verse at me. The first thing I think is, oh, they probably think I don't know that verse. The first thing I think is, wow, that's really cool. We're on the same page. No, it's not that they're the same guy. It's not that you think like that they think you're a Bible idiot and that you don't know the verse, but that asking for prayer implies that you have lost some of your faith, which is a weird implication. Yes, that's exactly what it feels like. Yes.
Like, I don't trust God. I need you to pray. And I say, well, here's some verses to back up. This is why you should have faith. It's like, I do. That's why I asked you to pray. Yeah. Yeah. I could see that. Yeah. I disagree. Damn. So some people like it.
Like, let's say when the preacher comes and reads a verse, which I have to admit, I rarely do that because I always think, I just feel awkward. Part because I feel like what you do. You just told me I was some kind of ridiculous rube. But nonetheless, I like it. I like verses. I feel like we're on the same page then, Dan. I'm just ready to admit it. Well, I'm rarely the guy who posts it or says it, or I usually go more by the principle, well, you know, God's got this, rather than, you know, Job 24, 3. Yeah. That's what I'm saying. I know God's got it.
That's why I asked you to pray. If I didn't think God has gotten it, then I wouldn't ask you to pray for this situation. Okay. I feel like you should just do what I used to do. I asked you to involve the Holy Lord with a conversation, and you bring out a Bible verse, and I asked you to talk to God on my behalf. That's what I asked. At least I wouldn't call him a Bible bully. I'd call him maybe a… Well, I've got to categorize it as something sensational, otherwise it's not a good conversation. It's outrageous. It's a Bible build me up. A Bible panderer.
That's what God was doing. All right. I might be overselling this thing, but I'm just saying… Here's the thing. I think you do have people that are like that, though, that make judgments about someone who asks for help as if their faith is in peril here. And you can tell it by the tone of how they respond. Of how they've written it in the Facebook. They've typed it out with a certain sarcastic drip. Well, if someone says, man, I'm really, really struggling to pay my bills, and our family's really hungry, would you pray for me? And then someone says, if you do not work, you will not eat, that would be a Bible bully. That's what I'm saying.
That's exactly the kind of thing I'm talking about. Rather than, God knows the hairs on your head, and he'll feed you, that's different. I didn't say he said that, Dan. You just brought up an example. It has nothing to do with what we're talking about. Sometimes there are verses of hope, and sometimes there are verses of, by the way, you're a jerk. Well, I feel like when someone is on their dire straits, it might not be time for a rebuke. I've seen that, too, though. Well, maybe it is. I don't know. Maybe they do need a rebuke. Who's to say? Sometimes people do.
I don't know. Once again, this just might be where I'm coming from, but it kills me. I start reading them, and I see five people praying, praying, praying. I'm like, man, you guys are awesome. Someone said, hey, I need some prayers, and they're like, I'm on it. Done. And then here comes Johnny West Coast flying in from out of nowhere, and he's like, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. God's got it handled. I'm like, I know. That's why I asked you to pray, Johnny West Coast. That's why I asked you to do it. Seriously. I'll be about 90% of the stuff I put on Facebook, if I'm responding to someone's post, it's just obnoxious.
You know, silly. Sometimes I wonder, what is a person? I mean, do they understand I'm really coming at this from just being goofy? I mean, I wonder if I've offended anybody. I'm certain that you have, Dan. I'm pretty sure I have. You know, I wonder more if you're maybe, you should, you know, decipher that before you post it. Cheryl says the same thing. Dan, did you ever think? Did you ever think before you write that? Instead of throwing out a bologna sandwich and then going, I wonder if they like bologna. Do you like bologna? Oh, you're a vegetarian.
Actually, by virtue of accepting to be on Facebook, I think you, I mean, it's a weird interaction. Hey, I'm going to say something. Anybody that knows me, please chime in. Yeah, yeah. Like, it's an odd way to interact with someone socially. Was it last night, night before my daughter put something on? And she's kind of going through a hard time, boyfriend, girlfriend, stuff. And she kind of threw something up there. And I sat there and thought, I got a reply for this, that it's really perfect. And I kind of typed it in. And I thought, maybe I should text her and say, do you mind if I say this? Because it's not very, very friendly. Right.
Toward the idiot. A different party, sure. Toward someone who I'm not very impressed with right now. Sure, sure. But, you know, I didn't do it. And I said, probably for five minutes, I was doing something else. And I came back to the computer and I said, enter. Something about, you know, him being all self-absorbed and all that stuff. And then the post, like, the whole thing was deleted like 10 minutes later. She goes, I talked to her the next day. It was kind of late at night. And she goes, well, I'll be honest. I was being a little dramatic.
And I just thought the whole post shouldn't be there. I said, well, I didn't want to, I wasn't trying to offend you. But the guy's a jerk. And I wanted everyone to know it. You know, Dan, I like your moral battle here. It's not something I'm generally used to seeing from you. Like, am I doing the right thing or not? Enter. Enter. Forget it. Yeah, I hope he reads this. I've never had this problem before. Go.
This is a five-minute filter. This is way new territory for me. I kind of enjoy this give and take. Okay, now let me ask you this just real quick while I'm on the subject of Facebook. Because I find, I do this all the time, right? Is I'll have something typed in and then I'll just abandon it. And I probably abandon 90% of the things that I thought I was going to say and then 10% leaks out. I feel like, Dan, you don't have this problem. Say it again. Like, I'll see something, you know, and I'll type something in and then I'll look at it for a second. I'll go, ah, forget it. And then I'll erase the whole thing. Oh, I do that.
All the time. All the time. Yeah. Unless it's like some snide, you know, you know, your mother's fat. I'll put that in. And then later on, they think I'm serious. What if I shouldn't have called that man's mama? Very large. She seems rather angry at me. You know, do you think that could be taken the wrong way? Because I'm just joshing. You know what? Answer.
I like to make comments on Roloff once in a while. It's like, oh, you know, it's because, you know, you don't blow your nose or something. I feel like your jabs are kind of like sixth grade jabs. I'm pretty sixth grade. I feel like you could bring them up into the manhood and just say something sharp. Must have been that Jabs for Idiots book I bought. How to tell a zinger. Well, they'll like this one. How to roast your buddy on the playground. Oh, that Zig Ziglar just knows everything. All right. You're listening to Life in the Path. Jeff, you know what?
Stay off the Facebook. Just stay. I feel like I'm going to abandon myself. It's time to get off. Dang. All right. So here's the thing. The American Bible Challenge show comes on. This is a game show, right? It's a game show. It's hosted by comedian Jeff Foxworthy. It premiered Thursday night on the Game Show Network. And it combined, you know, elements of faith and fun while contestants played to win money
for their favorite charities. I may have read the propaganda. All right. So anyway, so I decided that I was looking forward to the scene for the way wrong reasons, right? Because I want to dominate the Bible trivia. So my superiority. Finally, there's a Jesus show so I can be glorified. The armchair Archbishop. This was totally wrong. So, but, but it comes on and like, I was over at my mom's house and we're like, we're going to, we're going to check this thing out. So we go, we turn it on.
And the first question is like, uh, uh, the first round is, is total rudimentary. I mean, your average first grader who's ever even stepped into the church knows these questions. Um, you know, like what, what guy was associated with a big arc, you know, like that, that's the type of question that's going on. Uh, what bird was sent out, uh, after the flood and like, it's multiple choices. You don't have to come up with it on your own, you know? And so I was really disappointed in the first round and the second round too. Like, like they, these were generally very, very easy questions. And like, they had all these, they had these, uh, uh, who was it? The galloping geezers. Like, like the different names of people who, who love Jesus and they're, they're fighting for a, to win money for a charity. That's a cool part of the show is that like, nobody takes home anything.
All the money, they're, they're all, all of it goes to a charity. Like everyone has picked out a charity, like a biblical charity that they're going to follow. Do you think we could become one of the charities? Yes. Yes. I think it's very possible. We need everything we can get. Uh, so, so anyway, like I watched it and it was, um, I feel bad about, about this, but like it took them the first 10 minutes of the show, they were introducing the, the, the people and they had the cool backstory, backstory as a guy like an Iraq war vet. And there's a bunch of old guys who get together and play golf and love Jesus. And a bunch of ladies that run a, some kind of shop that gives away a food to people.
And I, and I was like six minutes in, I'm like, Oh, can we just get on with this? I'm trying to dominate here. I want to show off what I know about Jesus. Let's get this thing rolling here. Check this out, ma. I know. Um, so, so anyway, they, um, overall it's an hour long game show and I would say you could probably chuck 40 minutes on it. Kind of like this show. Very similar. And, uh, yeah, it proposed to be funny, but it was not. It's right on. Um, but, but anyway, I would probably watch it again, but, but, uh, for the speed round,
the speed round at the end, they're asking you like, it was women of the Bible and they're asking you like 15 questions in a row and you're trying to, those were difficult, uh, trying to pick out the names of some of these ladies and that was interesting. Uh, but, uh, the whole thing, I, you know, it was a little too long and, uh, and I, I didn't get to dominate my, my five-year-old rocked half the questions in the first two rounds. Okay. Nice. So, um, yeah. So, you know, I, you know, I'd check it out, but I'm not sure. They need to cut that thing down like half an hour. Well, they can't do the rudimentary questions forever, you know? I mean, is it, is it like they ask a question and then whoever buzzes in first gives the
answer or, or, okay. Yeah. Huh. Standard game show fare. Yeah. Yeah. They ask a question, you give the answer. That's pretty much how it works. Why don't you take a tour? I don't know. Just try to get a picture. Was there a Ferris wheel? Do they spin anything?
Uh, yeah. So, you know, whatever. I just, just in case you're thinking about checking it out, I give my, I'll give it half a star. I did rock though. I did do well. Did you do the good on the women of the Bible? You know, I, there, there was, uh, I, I did struggle a little bit. So it's, it's the individual names that I, I'm not very good at. I'm good at broad stories, but remember names, even a real, you know, normal life, I can't pick out people's names very well. Yeah. There's a guy at, oh man, this is going to get out. There's a guy at church that like, seriously, I see every Sunday have for the last six years.
I, I, and I, I, I remember his name or you have someone tell me his name every week and the next week it's completely gone. You think he's somebody else? Uh, yeah. Yeah. I've mistaken him for somebody else and I just, I cannot let it go. And it's obviously not this guy. Yeah. I've done that before. But see, that's the problem with being a boisterous man is, is I, I just go ahead and, and rip it out. What the man's name is. I just, Steve, Steve, and he goes, are you talking to me?
I'm like, are you Steve? You know, cause I think he's just joshing with me. He goes, no, I'm Greg. I'm like, I guess I'm not. Yeah. Well, I'm really mad at Steve. Where is he? Ah, so that's embarrassing. Hey man, someone, who's got a, who's the lady's voice? Is that you? I didn't make no, the chat's accusing people of having a lady's voice. That's Dan, obviously. Ha ha ha ha ha.
Like that? I don't know. Oh. Okay. So here's the deal. The question is, is skinny dipping in the Sea of Galilee sacrilegious? So to rehash the story. Can I answer now or show it? No, no, no. Just wait for the context, all right? So there's a group of congressmen, they go to Israel and they're hanging around and they're eating dinner next to the Sea of Galilee. The waiters that are there, they're talking about, hey, it's a momentous, it's a historical
site. And people like to go, go take a dip in there. So it convinces these people to go in and it's customary to swim or at least go in. So a lot of these congressmen are doing so. They decide they're going to go in and they, you know, I think they walk in fully clothed or at least in bathing apparel. But this one guy decides he's going to go down to the spank of how God sent him out. And he goes diving into this thing and he swims around for a little bit. This is like a year and a half ago. So it finally gets out and people are outraged at this behavior that this is what he's decided to do. And the question from the, from like a mainstream perspective to the religious media is, isn't it not sacrilegious to swim in the Sea of Galilee?
What's the answer? Can I answer with a broader answer? Yeah, hit me with it. I don't know that I believe in sacrilegious. Like just on the whole, right? Like I believe you're against, you've, you've sinned or you haven't. Uh, the, I don't know that the category of sacrilegious, it just seems like I've set up an institutional set of rules and you've broken them. Right now, if they happen to break God's, God's word too. Now you're some trouble, but you know, like. Like, well they're coming from a viewpoint of society. Everybody's looking for reasons to be offended. Yeah.
It was like, yeah, are you guys offended? It's like. Yeah. I mean, it's a, it's a deal. Swimming bare Tommy is kind of gross anyway. The fact that it's in the Sea of Galilee is none of my business. It shows you he's not a smart person. Yeah. I mean. Look at all these people. I think I'll take my clothes off and swim. It's certainly dumb. Seriously, I mean, have you read the Bible?
Did you see how many fish come out of that place? You know? Every one of them naked. I totally would not. I'm not bare Tommy in there. You know what I'm saying? The swimming trunks are for your protection. Not necessarily, you know, only for the protection of others for viewing. I mean, it's to keep you from wildlife. Okay. Let me ask this, Mike. You got a problem with this guy taking a skinny in there anyway? Like, let's say you're hanging out with the fam and all of a sudden you see Congressman
Johnson go take a dive in the Sea of Galilee. What are your thoughts? Does this bother you? I say, hey, Congressman. Well, does it? Williams, is that better? Should I have chosen a different Congressman? The number of words you put in there that could have. My bad. We really shouldn't do stories like this. We're not good with them. So, okay. Early church, second, third century, everybody was baptized nude.
That was just how they did it. How do you know that? It's historically, I got writings in my office. I got books. And we studied that in my class, the Doctrine of Baptism. And I thought it was so weird. They wanted living waters. They wanted it to be moving. So if you could do a river, that'd be better. It was just kind of their thing. And a lot of times they waited a year because they wanted to make sure they'd kind of cleaned up the sin in their life before they went for the big plunge. And they went in naked.
Did the fat guys still wear a t-shirt? I don't think they had fat guys back then. That's possible. I want to get baptized in the nude. Okay. Now, see. I feel like I did it wrong. The only way that you tell it. Now, wait a minute. Jesus was baptized in the Sea of Galilee, right? I'm talking second and third. He was in Jordan River. Yeah.
Okay. Okay. So that's not the same, right? Yeah. Was there anybody cool baptized in the Sea of Galilee? Peter walked on the water. Sea of Galilee? That's pretty deep water. Yeah. Jesus was there. So wouldn't be going in be like the not fun part of it? Yeah. I mean, if you could walk across it, then maybe you got something.
But if you went in, you're like the not Peter. Now, it says that Peter took off his clothes and jumped out into the boat to see Jesus after the resurrection. I don't know that that's the nude. You don't see that in the poster. That'd be different to see Jesus outstretch his hand and then Peter's bare bum running out there. Jesus was more like, will you get back in the boat? Cover yourself. I didn't call you out here. Put your clothes on. You know, I find it hard to have faith in day-to-day life sometimes. I find it really hard to have faith nude walking on top of the water during a storm.
I feel like I haven't given Peter enough credit. My faith is tested when I'm in the nude. I've never picked it. There's a lot more nudity in the Bible than I have imagined. Well, okay. So generally speaking, though, do I have a problem with a guy skinny dipping next to me? Yeah, I do. I mean, not just I don't like it. Yeah, I don't like it. Is he corrupting my family by being in the nude? Well, yeah. I mean, okay. Hold on.
Is it nighttime? I don't understand. No, no. He's in the day. He's in a public setting at a restaurant. I'm not saying he's not an idiot. The servers are saying, hey, go ahead and swim. All right. What were they doing there anyway? Was it like an envoy to Israel for diplomatic reasons? Yeah. That's it. How'd it go?
Wow. Taking the sights, they said. I'm going to dip in that. You can't touch me. I feel like this is just a poor decision. So they broadly, I mean, the guy's an idiot. It's a bad move on the government's money. Skinny dipping out in the middle of everywhere. Now, what does it have to do with the government's money? Well, I'm paying for you to act like an idiot. No, you're not. It's free to skinny dip in the galley. No, but I paid for the trip.
Well, I mean, you paid for me to get there. I have less of a problem. Hey, man, you don't owe me 24 hours a day just because you paid for the plane ticket. No, I have less of a problem if he went there on his own and made a doofus out of himself. All right, that's fair. Do we know who this man was? Yeah. His name's in there somewhere. I don't know if I need to know, but tell me it wasn't like Kennedy. No, it's not a Kennedy. There's no Kennedys left in Congress, is there? I don't know. A year and a half ago, I can't remember when he died.
Yeah, it was before the election, so never mind. I'd probably say he's not there anymore then, Dan. Probably not. A year and a half ago. He was pretty pickled most of the time. He probably kept going. I'd have to say on the whole, like obviously, like him skinny dipping is the issue. Whether it's in the Sea of Galilee or not, it's of no recourse. He could have done it in the hotel swimming pool and it made just as much news. Isn't every body of water have history to it? I mean, I guess the poor is the Sea of Galilee. There's nothing that's sacred about it. Jesus was in a boat here.
It's moving water. It's not the same water that was there. It's already made its rounds. It's probably somewhere else in the world. Yeah, God set up a recycle. You know what I'm saying? It leaves, it gets clean, it comes back. I think we're fine. I'm not in support of it, but I think we're okay. Yeah, I don't think it misrepresents. Well, it may misrepresent. I don't think it's a slap in the face to Jesus or Judaism. Let me ask you this.
You show up there at this restaurant and suddenly everybody's gone. Is this a nice place? Yeah, it's nice. Four star. You're confident that no one's going to show back up. Would you take a skinny in there? I don't think I'd take a skinny anywhere on the count. I mean, I just don't skinny places. I mean, I never have. I shower in my trunks. I don't want no trouble. I don't want to see any of that. I'm disgusted.
I know what's there. All right. All right. I know I can't. I haven't skinny anywhere. No. Here's the thing. It's the same reason that I sleep with clothes on in case of fire. Right? Like, here's the thing. I know as soon as I take a gamble in Muscovies that I'm going to do something, that something bad's going to happen, and then I'll be stuck in Muscovies. Right?
Same thing with the fire. You wake up, your house is on fire, and there you are in your tighty-whities standing in your front lawn going, what happened? You know, when you could be out there like a man wearing a pair of jeans. You know, sleep in some jeans. Be ready for some, you know, here's the thing. Let's say you've got to go grab your kids. You know, they're on the upstairs. You know, are you more manly running through a fire in a pair of jeans or a pair of undies? You know what I'm saying? I will jump through a fire in jeans. In undies, I'll have to wait and find something to kind of basket away so I don't burn my legs. Jeans, man.
Sleep in jeans. I find leather pants to work quite well in the fire. That will burn to your leg, Dan. Oh, okay. I don't have leather pants. Yeah, that's going to be a problem. Do you really wear jeans to bed? I used to. That's why I put stop to it. That'd be a little gruff. That teenager. Said I was acting like a homeless man. But I would, I tell you.
My woman didn't have me under her thumb. I'd do it. I can tell you what. She let me. There we go. You're listening to Life in the Path. We are here every Monday night from 10 to 11 p.m. Central Time at lifeinthepath.org. You can check out full versions of the show during the week at youtube.com backslash thepathonline or check out clips from the show, including clips from our many musical artists. I'll sing. I'll roll some up. But you can check that out at youtube.com backslash lifeinthepath. And you sign up for the podcast, too. You don't want to stay up late? I hear you. Ben, how many people sign up for the podcast? I don't know. More than three. Okay, that's good. Less than 2,000. So we're getting there. It's a barrier.
Here we go. So if you're new to the show, we're walking through. There's a man that runs godisimaginary.com. He says God is not real, and he has 50 proofs to show it. We're walking through one proof at a time. We're on proof number 15. This man says examine Jesus' resurrection. Here we go. Here's his commentary. Jesus' resurrection after his death is the ultimate and defining proof of Jesus' divinity. Just about everyone knows the story, which is summarized in the Apostles' Creed. Jesus was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell.
On the third day, he arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God, the Father Almighty. There is only one way for Jesus to prove that he rose from the dead. He had to appear to people. Therefore, several different places in the Bible describe Jesus' appearance after his death. Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, John 20 and 21. 1 Corinthians 15, 3-6 provides a nice summary of these passages as written by Paul. Paul summarizes, as you can see in this passage, Jesus appeared to hundreds of people a number of different times. When we look at these Bible passages, there's a question that comes to mind. Why did Jesus stop making these appearances? Why isn't Jesus appearing today? It really is odd. Obviously, Paul benefited from a personal meeting with the resurrected Christ.
Because of this personal visit, Paul could see for himself the truth of the resurrection, and he could ask Jesus questions. So, why doesn't Jesus appear to everyone and prove that he is resurrected, just like he appeared to Paul? There's nothing to stop Jesus from materializing in your kitchen tonight to have a personal chat with you. And if you think about it, Jesus really does need to appear to each of us. If Paul needed a personal visit from Jesus to know that Jesus was resurrected, then why wouldn't you? It is an important question for the following reasons. We are told by the Bible that Jesus appeared to hundreds of people. We therefore know that it is okay for Jesus to appear to people. It does not take away their free will, for example. We know that it would be easy for Jesus to appear to everyone all through history, since Jesus is all-powerful and timeless. We know that if Jesus did reappear to everyone, it would be incredibly helpful. We could all know personally that Jesus is resurrected and that Jesus is God. If Paul and all the other people in the Bible needed a personal visit to know that Jesus was resurrected, then why not you and me?
Yet, we all know that Jesus has not appeared to anyone in 2,000 years. In other words, there is nothing stopping Jesus from appearing to you and several good reasons for him to appear. Then he goes into a section about praying to Jesus. This is his favorite topic. What if we pray to Jesus and say, Dear Jesus, please appear to us as you did to Paul and the 500 brethren, so that we can see the evidence of your resurrection. In your name we pray. Amen. Here is what Jesus promised in the Bible. He goes back to Matthew 7, 7, saying, What you pray for, I will provide. In John 14, 4, whatever you ask. In Matthew 18, if you two agree on earth about anything I ask, it will be done for you. Blah, blah, blah.
Then he says, Jesus is actually in our midst, so he is right here already, supposedly. Yet, when we pray to him to physically materialize, nothing ever happens. Isn't it odd that nothing happens, given the fact that Jesus promises that something will happen? Isn't it odd that nothing happens when supposedly Jesus is right here with us already, and materialization would be trivial for him? As you think about this, you will realize that Paul's story in the Bible must be false. Simply look at Paul's story like any judge in a courtroom would. What Paul's story in 1 Corinthians 15 is suggesting is entirely unprecedented. A man dead three days with mortal wounds came back to life. Yet, there is absolutely no evidence that the story is true. There are many alternative explanations for what Paul is saying. Paul could be fabricating the story. He could have hallucinated a dream, the meaning.
Paul could have seen an imposter, etc. In addition, no one is seeing Jesus today, even though it would be trivial and obvious for Jesus to appear to people today, just like he did with Paul. Given that the resurrection story is clearly a myth, it means that Jesus, if he existed at all, was a normal human being, not God. The resurrection clearly did not happen. And with that, we can see that God himself is imaginary. If God actually did exist and was playing any role whatsoever on this planet, there is no way that he would allow an imposter like Jesus. Mike, what are your thoughts? Dang it. I'm going to go to Dan first. This one's heavy. Like, you know, I struggle with this one myself sometimes. Like, I don't struggle with the fact that I know that it's true, but I feel like I get caught in a circle where I'm trying to guess why God does things, right? And then I get to the point where I'm like, it's none of my business.
I don't know. I don't know why he does things. From his point of view, what he doesn't like is evidence without source, right? This is his proof on just about everything. Like, I can say there's the four written account of the Gospels that say the tomb was empty. He's out. You know, he's not here. We saw him crucified. We came to the tomb, and now he's gone, right? He then appeared to people in the upper room and, you know, made appearances around, including Paul, right? So here's more physical evidence that they met Jesus after his proven death, right? So here's evidence without source right now. You know, without Jesus saying, by the way, God is imaginary man.
All these things happened. I'm Jesus. How's it going, right? And so basically what he's saying is that since the evidence hasn't – since Jesus has not appeared to him, then it's obviously not true. And once again, I think it's more of a pompastic view like everything gets vetted through me. You know, if these things didn't happen to me, if Jesus didn't talk to me – and frankly, it kind of falls along the lines of – what is it? The prayer of a righteous man. It was in Peter where he says – it goes back to his prayer thing where it says a prayer – so blah, blah, blah, something righteous man, so your prayers will not be hindered, right? Like I think that has a lot to do with his prayer struggle is he might not fit the qualifications of a righteous man. His prayers might be hindered. You know what I'm saying? When Jesus says, you know, things like when you ask for things, it will be given unto you, you know, there's a lot of qualifiers to that statement as like you're going to ask for things as you hand your life over to Christ, you know, that are within his will, right? Like you're conforming to God's will, and God is more than willing to, you know, supply the needs for his work to be done, you know?
And so, I don't know, back on the proof of the resurrection thing, I don't know. I don't know what to say about that. Like I know where he's coming from, and I can see what he's getting at, but like he's still once again ignoring the four accounts of the Gospels, you know? I think you're dead on. He's made himself the center of the universe, and if I haven't seen it or witnessed it personally, then it couldn't have happened. And so, he's just completely discounting written evidence, and he's also dancing around. I mean, he's just saying, just because I haven't read the evidence, it must not exist. Well, there's all kinds of evidence out there. If he would read books that have looked up for evidence, he wouldn't have to even research it himself. He doesn't want to, he can, you know, there's studies out there that address evidences of the resurrection, and the death, the burial, the resurrection. Okay, so, I mean, get back to his broader question, right? Because he's asking a character of God question when it all boils down to it, and this is the question where I get stuck at, right? Like, I believe that Christ is who he says he is, died for my sins, and ascended back up to heaven.
But what's the benefit of faith in the unseen? Is it because it's not forced? You know what I'm saying? Is it because it's not coerced? Is that kind of the goal? Like, I always looked at, because people ask this question all the time, right? Like, if God is who he says he is, if he loves me the way he says he does, why doesn't he just come and tell me so I can worship him? You know, I've prayed this myself, right? Like, God, I'm so tired of being the screw-up that I am. Can you just end this for me? You know, can you help stop me from being myself? I'm giving my free will up. Take it.
I don't want to be the screw-up I am, right? Just do this. And he doesn't, right? And usually I explain it as is that you can't have an honest love and an honest relationship without freedom to not have those things, right? And so, like, that was my big battle with, you know, why God created humans and angels, right? He could have created us all angels and just been worshipped forcefully, right? Like, you don't know any different. That's what you do, right? But he created humans with the option and a free will to decide to love him. And really the freedom is what creates an honest, deep relationship because you have the freedom not to be in it, you know? And so you're choosing to be there. You're choosing to humble yourself and you're choosing to be a follower of Jesus Christ, which produces an honest faith instead of a forced faith. And so, like, if I had to explain, my train of thought is that, you know, why Jesus hasn't appeared, you know, in the last 2,000 years, if that's even true.
He hasn't appeared to me. I don't know what he does. You know, he does whatever he wants. But, like, you know, if I had to say that that's part of the faith, right? And that's part of the honest-seeking relationship. And honestly, if you're looking for God, you'll find him. And, you know, he's not going to appear based on your will. Like, I want to see a physical form in my Dorito of Jesus Christ speaking the gospel to me. You know what I'm saying? Like, he's given you enough. What was that where the Pharisees are always asking for miracles to be done, right? And he says no miracles will be given because if you don't believe what's coming out of my mouth, you're not going to believe the miracles. Same thing with the chasm.
Where the guy says, look, let me go back and tell my brothers what I've seen and that the heaven and hell thing is true. Yeah, and he's like, look, you know, they didn't believe you before. They're not even going to believe a dead man. So you're not going, right? It's like Jesus knows your heart. He knows your mind. He knows the way people think, right? Look at all the things that he did. And, you know, back in the day that at the time were earth-shaking. And here we are 2,000 years later. And this guy says, yeah, that, you know, raising the dead and him resurrecting. And then all the people that he healed, ah, you know, I saw someone say that you did it, but I just ain't buying it. Right.
So, like, I look at it and say, it's good enough for me. And, like, this guy looks at it and says, it'll never be good enough for me. Yeah, he's kind of, I kind of see him as, like, the Thomas guy. Because even Jesus' own disciples at the resurrection, you know, within days there, and Jesus is appearing to them. There they are in a closed room, and Jesus appears somehow in this closed room with a locked door. And Thomas is like, you know, let me feel. I don't know. Is it really you? And Jesus is like, come on, feel my hand, you know. Do you see the whole, you know, look at it, this is me. And he has this, you know, epiphany moment. And he says, my Lord and my God. And this is what Jesus said back to him.
This is in John chapter 20. He said, have you believed because you have seen me? You know, he's asking Thomas, you believe because you've seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. I think that's kind of a cool thing. He kind of puts us in a blessed area. We haven't seen him, but we believe. With everything in us, in this room, all three of us believe absolutely in his lordship and his deity, his death, burial, and resurrection. And I hope he does show up to this guy. Would it be enough? I don't know. Well, that's the thing. I think that's the whole point that Jesus is trying to make through those examples, right?
He's like, I know you guys. I've created you. I know you. And I could throw, maybe the question asked is, and he's tried to put forth examples before, but, you know, Jesus has done exactly what he set out to do. Because he knows anything more than that wouldn't have changed anything. What else could he possibly have done? He died and resurrected from the grave. And you go, that's not enough. Seriously. Yeah. Move Mount Sinai. Come on, impress me. Move Mount Sinai 10 feet.
Yeah. You know? Oh, what's he supposed to do? Question every single person on the earth and say, what would prove my existence to you? How can I serve you? Right. What can I do to wow you with my deity? Oh, my son who I've known before you were born. You know? It's like my old man coming up to me and going, what can I do to prove to you that I'm your father? I'm like, I don't know. You know? Pay my bills, I guess.
That'd be nice. I don't know, Dan. Get away from me. You're acting weird. You know? So, I don't know. Like, I see what he's driving at. But, like, how would you, if you had to try to explain it to him, how would you marry this for him? Because logically, he, I mean, from an outsider's point of view, I could kind of see where he's coming from. He says, look, if God is who he says he is, why don't he just show up and show me? Because I'm, you know, I'm not so stupid to ignore facts in front of me. At least he's being honest on this one. But is Jesus basically saying, yes, you are that stupid?
Well, yes, you are that stubborn, and yes, you are that hard-hearted, because I've done that. And look at all the people that did not follow Christ in his own time, even to all the people that he spoke with, right? They talked to when Peter and Paul, Peter, they were, they were, it was in Acts where they started to go out and preach, and they'd say how many people were saved, right? Versus how many people were there, you know? And so this had just happened recently, that Christ had died and resurrected, and they kind of explained the whole thing. And these people were close enough to the action that they'd have heard tell of kind of the story anyway. So here's Peter clarifying what went down. And, you know, X number of people got saved. X number of people walked away and went back home. You know, so what more could Christ have done to convince a guy this day and age how it happened? I think it's Jesus basically saying, look, I know what you're saying, but you're just, you're basically vomiting at the mouth. You're just using a bunch of words that you don't even believe, because I could have done those things, and you'd be in the exact same place.
I know you better than you know you. Yeah. I wish he would do the honest research. It's an honest question that he's struggling with, but I wish he would honestly look at the evidence that is out there, and the writings from history, and the other people who have struggled through this, rather than just throwing out verses and say, well, I don't believe it, so it didn't happen. I feel like this guy knows his Bible more than most Christians I know, which I appreciate about him. And actually, he's struggling with honest questions, but the only downside is he's struggling from a terrible point of view. Like, he doesn't want to know what honest to answer. He just wants to fight about it, right? He went just far enough to prove himself, but not really see the truth of what's really behind this. And then he said, there's no answer in this question, and then went skinny dipping in Galilee. He's doing the same thing we do.
As believers, we often just regurgitate the same phrases, you know, the little Jesus lingo. He's just regurgitating atheist lingo without actually doing the research to say, is it true? Is this real? I was praying this on the way in, because I struggle with this a lot. But I was driving on the way in, and I thought, you know, I started praying. It's usually my alone time with God just before this show, you know. And so I shut off the radio when I was praying, and I got on the train of thought where I was, like, I ended up in a conversation that I was practicing telling somebody about Jesus Christ, right? And, like, I got done, and I thought, I started praying, God, I could spout that garbage that just came out of my mouth for the rest of my life, and I didn't believe a word of it. You know what I'm saying? Like, it was biblically sound what was coming out of my mouth. It sounded great.
You know, like, if I was talking to somebody and trying to convince them that Jesus is the way to go, it was pretty good, you know. But I thought, Lord, I don't want to know anymore. I just want to feel more. I don't want to know any more than I know now. I eventually will, right? But, like, I am too worded up at the moment. You know what I'm saying? I don't want to say that I read my Bible too much because that's not the case. But, you know, I am too pious, speeched up. There's too much going on in my head that I can regurgitate without feeling it and without thinking about it. And I thought, I've got to get out of this. Like, I could smell this religion on me coming. Like, if I let this go unchecked six months from now, I will be unbearable, and I know exactly who I will be.
I will be a judgmental jerk. You'll be a Bible bully. I will be a Bible bully. I will be the guy on Facebook throwing out Philippians quotes. Oh, someone's sick? Well, get your faith back in line, jerk face. That's me, you know? Like, and it's really hard to admit because, like, I've been working really hard to back my faith up with some Bible. You know, I don't want to just be throwing junk out, you know, that isn't biblically based. But, like, I can smell myself coming a mile away. I can smell the crap coming out of my mouth, and I'm going, you better be careful. Like, I'm like, God, I'm just talking. I'm not meaning what I'm saying.
It sounds great, and it's all biblically based, but I don't mean what's coming out of my mouth. I need help. I need help with this, right? And that was an extremely humbling prayer, right? When I catch my own self acting like a religious jerk, even when it sounds good, right? Like, it totally, I mean, it still gives all the glory to God, and it still points exactly where it should, but I just know it's just regurgitated from somewhere and not from my heart. And I thought, I can't have this. It's got to end. I don't know what I'm going to do about it. I thought, I'm going to have to double up on my prayer time or something. I've got to have way more relationship than I do, you know, my Bible study at the moment, because it's just, it feels out of whack.
It feels weird. Yeah. You know, I don't know. It was a very odd feeling. Ben. What? What do you struggle with? Is it getting a clean razor? I struggle with following your bombastic diatribe you just got done doing. What do you mean? That you couldn't follow it? Lord, if I can distract from you for a moment and talk about me for a while. What?
Is that what I did? I didn't do that. I thought maybe I'd share an honest struggle. Maybe we recognize it in themselves. No, it's not the deal. All right. Sorry. I've never heard of such a thing. You're listening to life in the path. Dang it. That was proof number 15. He wants to examine Jesus' resurrection. I think maybe our thing to say would be, then you should.
You should examine Jesus' resurrection. Great questions. Yeah. Great observations. Like, I mean, if you look at all the evidence, you say, this thing is not trustworthy, and I feel like this thing is a lie because of such and such, okay. But if you're coming at the position to say, this is not true and it's silly, I mean, for a fact-based man, I would expect that you would know it. And so, you want to examine Jesus' resurrection? I got a thumbs up. Go right for it. If I had to give that answer, you'd have raked me over the coals. Here's what happens.
You sit back against that wall like Johnny King of the thing, and then you wait for me to talk, and I'll say stuff like, you should, well, you should research it, and you'll go, that's it? He should research it? That's the best you have to offer? Didn't you know that I was awesome at the American Bible Challenge? You should have seen that coming. I'm not going to answer next time with my long-windedness. I just want to love Jesus correctly. Dang it. All right, Mike. People need advice. What do they got?
Hang on. I'm on it. You give me a heads up or something. I got to grab it. Okay, here we go. Dear Lie from the Path, I have been dating Larry for a little over a year. During this time, he has been in and out of work. Anytime we go anywhere or do anything, he never offers to pay. Even if he has money in his pocket, he'll look the other way when a check arrives. Oh, man. That's pretty adolescent. Other times, he insists on Dutch treat. Larry says we were raised differently.
I say he's cheap. When the holidays come around, I never receive a gift or a card. I'm a hardworking woman who is currently holding down two full-time jobs. I don't see why Larry fails. He is entitled. Am I out of line for thinking a man should treat a woman? I just don't think Larry is morally correct. I don't know if it's a moral issue, but he sounds like a real sleaze. Yeah, I mean, he's just a jerk, man. They're not compatible. She needs out. No. Who is compatible with a guy who doesn't pay for nothing?
Someone else who doesn't pay for nothing. They're both on welfare. Some people like that. I love poor. I love poor, lazy people like myself. Is there anyone out there like that? There's people out there that just don't work. They don't have to. I mean, and some people honestly want a job and can't find one. That's a different – it doesn't sound like him. He sounds like he's just kind of making it go. He's just kind of playing it. I work just long enough to have a little cash, then I somehow get fired or, you know, get bored, find a different job.
She's responsible. I've got two jobs. She needs to dump him. Yeah. It's not going to last. He's a succubus. Yep. Secular's Advice says, I agree that you and Larry were raised differently. I also agree that he's cheap. However, the idea that a man should always treat a woman is outdated. You signed yourself paying dearly. The question is, are you getting what you're paying for, and is it enough for you? What?
What? That's prostitution. I think she means in the relationship. Whatever. It's whoring. Yeah, it's true. It's emotional whoring. I agree with that. You're doing all the paying for services rendered, right? And he's not – Larry is a man harlot and not a good one. They're both extremes. I mean, she's working two full-time jobs.
She needs to quit a job, go out and socialize. Why didn't you give him one of her jobs? Maybe they're lady-only jobs. Maybe it's like a sales lady at the Victoria's Secret or something. Larry can't work there. He's a bum. That'd be an awkward job. I applied like three places. Nobody called me back. Sephora. I know the secret. Dear Life from the Path, my wife and I were sorting through some old things of mine and came across a wallet containing some pictures of my old high school girlfriend.
Man, the guy keeps his wallets around now. I was going to say, that's a long time – Well, I don't know how old he is, but – Normally, I wouldn't think twice about tossing them, but in this case, she was someone I had stayed very close with, platonically, until her untimely death several years ago. Oh. Man, this is taking a turn. What is the protocol for throwing away things like this when it's someone you were close to who is now deceased? That's a lot of qualifications. I'm sure her parents wouldn't want them. It feels disrespectful to toss them in the trash, but at the same time, I don't really feel I need to keep them.
My wife doesn't care either way, if I keep them or not. To keep or not to keep. Okay, hold on. This is a fairly insecure man. You know, like, that you have to run this decision through anybody, you know? Yeah. Can't you just look at the picture and go, ah, I just throw it in the drawer, keep it around, or, ah, I don't need this thing. You know, like, he's run it through his wife's. His wife's like, I don't care, you know, keep it. It's not like she's a threat. I like his wife's position on the matter. Yeah, I don't care either way.
Keep it, don't keep. That guy, was he seriously considering calling the deceased girl's parents? Hey, I found a picture of your dead daughter. Would you like it? No, I have them. You know what I'm saying? That's awkward and weird. Yeah. He's got no spine or backbone or decision-making bone in his body. This is not a… Now, think about that, though. If the woman has passed away, that means, like, if you throw that picture away, your eyes will never alight on her likeness again.
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, there's something permanent about death. That's true. About saying, I cannot conjure up good memories of this person in a clear fashion because I don't have the picture to look at. Okay, then keep it. Yeah. Keep it. Put it in a file. So if you ever want it, you can pull it out. If you don't, it's not in the way. Yeah.
Or, don't keep it. Who cares? Save a digital version of it on your hard drive. Take your own picture. It's like he's looking for controversy from an advice columnist because he can't find it in his own home. Yeah. Because his wife is dealing with it in a healthy and appropriate manner. Yeah. Yeah, really. Everybody else writes in. They're like, and my wife is now very upset that I want to keep this picture. That's where I thought it was going.
I thought it was going to be some kind of crazy, jealous wife who doesn't like the dead lady. No, she says, I don't care, you know, and Johnny knows buying his rights to the newspaper. That's weird. Who keeps a whole wallet? Like, if I get a new wallet, I chuck the old wallet because that's how I had to buy a new one. I don't keep it in a box somewhere. That's weird. That's weird behavior. Okay, here's secular's advice. There's some weird stuff in here. Offer the pictures to your former girlfriend's family.
That's weird. Because they might surprise you and consider them treasures. It's got to be like a yearbook photo, right? What kind of phone call is that? Hi, I'm Chuck. I was friends with your daughter. I found a picture of her likeness, and I know that she's long deceased. Do you want me to bring this by or what? My wife doesn't care. I feel like that's more awkward than the phone call is worth. I don't know. Sorry about breaking up with her and breaking her heart. Man.
I could just mail it. How's that feel? She says, however, if they're not interested and you can't bring yourself to put them in the garbage, put them in a box in which you found them and let your family deal with them after you're gone. Oh, that's classic. Why did dad have this picture of a woman or another woman? I feel like you're just giving the spineless guy more of a jello spine even now. Like, yeah, make it somebody else's problem because seriously, you can't make this decision. I can't deal with it. Just put it in a box. The pressure's too great. Let my children handle it after I'm dead.
What a bum. It might be the same guy from the first question. Seriously. Okay, last one. Dear Life on the Path, my husband and I have been married for 10 years, together for 15. When we met, he was in a band and we did a lot of socializing, drinking, partying, that kind of deal. Over the years and two kids later, I enjoy these activities less as the demands of parenting and full-time careers take top priority. My husband frequently makes the comment, you used to be fun. I find it incredibly hurtful and told him so, but he continues to say it anyway. Sometimes I'm tempted to lash out and say, then go find yourself someone who is. Is there any other way I can address this?
Party pooper. Signed, Mrs. Jagger. You used to be fun. You used to not be fat. Mitch. He's probably not taking care of himself. Probably. He needs to grow up. He's still living in the past. He's not being a man to his family, to his wife. Yeah. Maybe she's underselling how unfun she is. Maybe she's really not fun at all anymore.
Yeah, because he's too lazy to do the house stuff, so she's working all day and then coming home and cleaning and cooking and taking care of the kids. That's not in there, Dan. I can make it up. That's not in there with the working and the cleaning. All right, fine. Come at it with both angles. First, give me the context of a woman who is working, cooking, cleaning, putting stuff together, and this guy just wants to live the glory days in his pseudo band in which they met. Okay. All right, hit me with it. Advice to her in that situation.
Okay. In that situation, yeah. He's a lazy bum. And you're right. She's probably not his categorically version of fun anymore. I pull back my previous advice. It's not a good idea to otherwise point someone else's shortcomings. That was wrong. I was at the moment thinking that like, yes, things have changed, right? When he looks and says, hey, you know, you're not fun anymore, you know, well, you know, you're different too, right? You're not a hard rocker. You just look silly.
Right. Do you want to go out every night or do you want your kids to have breakfast? These are your options. I can't do both. Yep. Okay. Now, what was the other context? Okay. The other context is that she is not fun. She's decided, like, she takes this, she basically lures it over him that she's taking care of the children. She's home crocheting. Yeah.
No, not even that. Watching the game show network. She's home angry with him. Even when he suggests, hey, we should go out Friday night. Well, we can't go out Friday night. Do kids got a sucker. You did this to me. We can't afford a babysitter. You know what I'm saying? Like, she's totally gone the opposite way. Maybe she don't even like him anymore. No one spent any time with him at all. Hmm.
That's interesting. That's your advice? Hmm? You got a real pickle on your hands. But I'm not you. Is it? So, okay, maybe the response would be, well, A, are you fun? Maybe you should consider whether you're fun or not. Here's what they need to do. They need to start dating. They do? They need to start dating again. They need to find some…
They're trying to. He wants to take her out? No, he wants to covert. A 15-year-old or… What's it? Covert? What is it? What is that? Covert. He wants to go undercover? No, I don't know. What is it? Covert.
Covert around. What's that? Am I saying around? I don't think you're… That may be what you're intending. Jump or dance around excitedly? Yes. He wants to do that. Apply oneself to sexual or disreputable pursuits. Maybe. That also might be him. Disreputable? According to who?
So, they're role-playing. Synonyms are caper, skip, frisk, hop, prance. Frisk and prance aren't the same? Isn't frisk when someone, like, you know, searches you for items? Excuse me. Do you run the freedictionary.com? Because you're frisky. It's different. I don't. Okay. Anyway. So, like, honest answer, I would say, first, make sure you are open to your life, to being able to do things like that.
Like, make sure that you're not shutting down something simply because you don't like it that he seems to be still pining after days that have gone by. Other than that, he needs to look at his life and say, but my life is different. The minute I decided to have a child and say I do to a woman, my life changed. I don't get to, you know, I've agreed to other priorities in which I should also be having fun. And maybe he's just characterizing it wrong. And he certainly shouldn't be following his wife around saying, you used to be fun. But here's the deal. Men, men in general are, I don't know, they're pretty basic creatures, right? Like, their affection goes to where they feel like they're used and important. They're kind of dumb that way, right? A real dude who takes some responsibility realizes that he's important regardless if his wife says so in his providing for his family, in his loving his kids, in leading
his family in a certain way, right? Like, we'll default to that. Some other fellas remember how they had a really good time and people really liked them back when they were 20 and playing in a band. And they don't have that feeling anymore. So either they're not doing their job as a man of the house, and so their importance, they just drift back to where they didn't feel like they were worthless, right? So the truth of the matter is, is regardless of how his wife is acting, there's a role for him in that family that he's not taking. Otherwise, he'd be pursuing it. You know what I'm saying? And you pursue your relationship with your wife, you pursue your relationship with your kids, and you pursue your job being the man responsible for taking care of that household.
If you're not doing those things, then you are going to pine for the days where you didn't have so much, as far as you can see it, unwarranted responsibility, right? Because you don't feel important, you just feel like everyone's dogging on you, like your boss is making you do stuff, your kids are always whining, and your wife's always mad. It's because you're probably not doing your job. And your kids are probably upset at you because you're not supporting them and your wife doesn't feel loved. And so these are all things that you can work on, and you can feel important in that atmosphere instead of wishing for the days where you didn't have to do anything and still felt important. You know what I'm saying? Like he wants the ability to feel important without taking the responsibility, and that flat out is not how a wife or family, that's not how that works.
The band, yes. You can go out and drink a couple cases and still pull off the Stairway to Heaven solo. You're the coolest guy ever made. You know, 10 years later, not as cool. You know what I'm saying? No one gives a rip, whether you can do it or not. He needs to grow up a little bit, she needs to lighten up a little bit, come up with a new adult entertainment, age appropriate. Like what? Like what would be inappropriate? I don't know. The golden girl. How old are they?
They're probably in their mid-30s now, I'm assuming? Yeah. They're probably in their middle. So what's not cool? Bowling. What, 35 is the new 60? They need to go bowling now. It's time to stop going to the disco. Ooh, I got one more. Ready? Last one. You got two minutes. Dear Life from the Path, my sister sent me an email asking what I was getting our mom
for her birthday because she had very few ideas. I told her I was planning to get mom a gift card so she could buy a book for her e-reader. Two days later, my sister emailed me back telling me she liked my idea so much she used it and mailed mom the same gift card herself. She said, it's no big deal if we get mom the same thing. It's a big deal to me. I think it was rude and inconsiderate. She says I'm being ridiculous because it's only a gift card and it doesn't matter if mom got two of them. To me, if you ask what I'm getting someone as a gift, it's rude to run out and buy that item yourself. Who do you agree with? That is pretty low rent.
Hey, what do you get, mom? Hey, that's a great idea. I'm going to go buy it. It's only bad if you like up it, though. She got you 25? I'm getting you 35. Yeah. You know, I don't really have, I would agree on the gift card, it's not really a problem. I think you're looking, I don't know, why are you pandering to your parents? Oh no, but I'm the better daughter because I thought of this thing. No, you can tell it's rude because she'd sent it, she'd already bought it and sent it before she told the sister that's what she'd done. You know what I'm saying?
If it wasn't anything iffy about it, she goes, man, that's a good idea. Her sister overreacts, a.k.a. mails in to here to ask advice about it. No. No, she doesn't overreact. She, the sister, no, the one who stole the idea and sent the gift card, that's just flat out rude. Why doesn't she just think of it as her giving the idea as opposed to someone being, have stole it from her? Because people like to have their gifts appreciated. Well, that's pretty bombastic. You know, if you want a gift that's appreciated, probably a gift card's not the way to go. It's the most I thought of you in a very bland way. Okay, now hold on.
I mean, if it's to buy books on the e-reader, you want to pick out a book that mom doesn't like, just give her the money. I don't really know you at all. Exactly. You never know what book to get somebody. Yeah. That's how bookstores stay in business. People buying books. For themselves. Giving it to others. No. No. It's real dicey.
What kind of book would you buy for me? Well, how much for the Four Dummies series have you read? I've got the whole set. I get a Dummies of the Month. Book of the Month Club. Dummy of the Month. My new Dummies in. Parking for Dummies, finally. It's like the Consumer Reports for Dummies. I don't have a problem with this. I will agree that it's on a base level a little underhanded. However, if I'm the person that happens to me, I might be like, ah, you jerk. But that's probably about it.
I don't know that I really care. And if you get, you're receiving it, it's like, score. Yeah. You got double the stuff. They didn't care enough to think about anything for you, but they got you, you know, you got some good cash flow going on with gift cards. Yeah. If it's a good gift, mom, isn't it important that mom's happy, not that you get your glory? No. You want to be known for the guy that picked out good gifts. This is coming from a guy that picks out bad gifts. I pick out terrible gifts. And there's nothing worse than being known as the man that buys bad gifts.
That's what people think of me because that's what I do. I don't know. I think I don't have a problem. You want to listen to Live in the Path.
