Dear LFTP: companionship while his wife is in a nursing home

  • Is it wrong to want companionship while my wife with dementia is in a nursing home, and when should I explain my situation?

Mike reads a letter from a man married forty years whose wife has dementia and has lived in a nursing facility for six years. He asks whether it is wrong to want companionship and when to tell women he meets that he is married. The hosts answer plainly: the vow is until death, and loneliness is real but not an exception; the false dilemma of lonely-hearted staying home versus stepping out must be rejected in favor of a full life of charity, friendship, and community. The Secular answer is read and mocked: it suggests imagining the situation reversed and telling dates he is married during the first serious conversation.
