The survey: 20 percent say literal word of God
A host reads the Baptist Press writeup of the Gallup data: the share of Americans calling the Bible the literal word of God hit 20 percent, a new low since 1976, down from 24 percent in 2017 (seg-00418 to seg-00428). The three options are read aloud - (1) actual word of God, literally word for word; (2) inspired but not all literal; (3) ancient book of fables - and the room lands firmly in camp 2, questioning what 'actual word of God' could even mean for a translated text with poetry, wisdom, and apocalyptic literature (seg-00429 to seg-00447). Among evangelicals, 40 percent pick literal and 51 percent inspired, with 8 percent calling it fables ('You might not be a Christian, friend') (seg-00456 to seg-00461).
