AI could quietly shift cultural narratives and norms

Ben's core concern: auto-generated content representing a particular view of the world can shift cultural narratives, norms, and facts very quickly, since AI is only as good as its inputs and the internet is, in their words, a cesspool full of some of the vilest stuff. He draws the 1984 Ministry of Information analogy: you do not have to change what was said, just overrepresent one version until algorithms and bots treat it as true by volume. The alternative is curation, which raises the social-media problem of who decides what is shown: breastfeeding photos sometimes pass and sometimes are suppressed, and the change of Twitter's guard from Jack Dorsey to Elon Musk validated the difficulty of that job.
