Dear LFTP: unrequited love and the wedding speech

  • Am I wrong for settling for our amazing friendship, and how can I convince my best friend we could be more without losing her?
  • Should I write and give a toast at my sister's wedding even though she chose not to have a bridal party?

Ben reads three listener letters and the room gives advice. Letter one: a man who fell in love with his best friend ten years ago, was distanced, reconnected recently, still loves her, and asks whether he is wrong to settle for the friendship and how to convince her they could be more. The verdict: he is not settling — the reality he wants isn't true — and the Forrest Gump script he is following is immature; work on himself, because hoping the friendship turns into more shortchanges her too. Secular's answer: when a woman distances herself after a man declares romantic interest, she is not physically attracted to him and he should look elsewhere. Letter two: a woman whose little sister is getting married with no bridal party but still wants a toast from her; the room says give the speech — she saved you $500 on the dress — and mocks the AI-written alternative, with a running joke that Mike has outsourced his personality to AI. Secular's answer sides with the sister: be honest about your motivations, dismount the high horse, and write something heartfelt.
