Dear LFTP: the stolen college fund and telling the 90-year-olds
- Should I tell my 90-year-old parents that their grandson stole my granddaughter's college fund?
Ben hands to Mike, who reads a grandmother's letter: her son helped himself to the college money the great-grandparents set aside for her granddaughter; she fears telling her parents, in their nineties, could shock them into a stroke. The counsel: tell them only if it has a practical effect — estate plans, future giving to the son — otherwise don't multiply the pain; and the granddaughter's future isn't ruined, plenty go to college without a dime. The Secular answer says inform them in case they've been planning to leave anything in the estate.

The letter: 'Ralph,' a longtime best friend, retired and is bored, so he calls three or four times a week 'even when there's nothing new to talk about,' rehashing the same things; subtle hints haven't worked; letting it go to voicemail just earns a callback request.
