The backyard metaphor

Mike offers his governing metaphor: God sits at the dining-room table with the sliding door open; Mike plays in the backyard where the Father's rules and character apply, always keeping one ear open in case Dad calls him out into the darkness to do work. He resists reducing it to breakfast-cereal choices — sometimes the shirt did matter — and says maturity moved him from 'carpet bombing' every idea to trusting that if he's in the Father's backyard with an ear open, he'll recognize the voice and know what bears God's character. He asks whether there's anywhere theologically the metaphor is terrible.
