Dear LFTP: the backseat-driver sister and the labels riff
Dear LFTP: a retired man's slightly younger sister is a loud, aggressive backseat driver whose outbursts distract him. Advice ranges from reverse psychology (do the exact opposite of everything she says until she learns) to Dan's mischievous escalation to simply not taking her places. The Secular answer — she cannot help it — detonates a long riff on psychological labels: a host tells of picking up a hitchhiker in the snow whose Nintendo Switch directions fight ended with him walking home, then argues that labels like ADHD risk becoming shackles — 'I have this, therefore, I am this, as if it is not movable.' Object permanence and the garbage, depression and sad-boy self-talk, caffeine, sugar, pornography, heroin, overeating: the throughline is informed, not excused — almost every loss of control is preceded by fourteen decisions you could have made differently, so run early. The show closes on the standing benediction: 'be faithful in the means; God will handle the ends.'
